IF your team wasn't there?
The EIHL playoff weekend is fast approaching and Glasgow Clan aren't there having got thumped 5-0 in the 2nd leg at home after winning 3-2 in Guildford.
All I see on Twitter is Clan fans looking forward to going, I personally wouldn't go if my team wasn't there and couldn't justify spending £300+ from Friday-Monday.
So I put it to you guys, IF the BBL introduced a Playoff weekend for next season, would you be going IF your team wasn't one of the 4 teams involved?

The EIHL is marketed at pissed up 20 somethings.
The BBL is marketed at maws and das who have a stroke when their club have the audacity to raise season ticket prices by a tenner.
This is why it works well for hockey, imo, and wouldn't for us.

I do not agree with the pissed up 20 year old comment. Having been to the Motorpoint arena, Nottingham a few times the age range is vast with many senior citizens watching.
The standard in this country is good, and crowds likewise. Basketball in the form of the BBL is a poor standard. Tonight game a prime example. Don’t get me wrong I went to watch the poorest hockey game ever 2 weeks ago, acustom in many sports when playoffs etc are already determined.
I’m surprised people wouldn’t go see a playoff weekend, could be a great event for the BBL, and something that could actually attract crowds, bar cup finals

There are a lot of factors involved in this decision, ticket pricing, game schedule, event location, accommodation costs.
If marketed properly it could be a successful event, but the choice of venue is a key factor.

At the ice hockey they have blocks allocated for each team and you buy the tickets before you know if your team has made the playoffs
It's a party atmosphere each weekend and the fans of other teams adopt a team to support
I've been a few times. It's a great atmosphere all weekend. It clearly works.

If marketed properly it could be a successful event, but the choice of venue is a key factor. They use Nottingham as they have the most fans to star with. So they get half the arena sold out regardless of the other fans Newcastle would be a good location IMO Basically give Eagles two thirds of the tickets. And the fans of other teams the other tickets between them Would be a great atmosphere

The BBL used to have a Final Fours weekend (along with three-game quarter-finals) back in the 90s, didn’t they? I think they were scrapped when the league moved to regional conferences, and never came back?
Does anyone remember how they were marketed and sold back in the day, or was it another example of tickets being heavily discounted to get bodies in for the TV cameras?

We always went to the BBL finals weekend which used to be at the NIA Birmingham. It was a great weekend where we caught up with basketball fans from all over the country. I miss those times.

You can sort of already answer this question with a real world event – the British Basketball All-Stars Championship (and yes, I know it doesn’t have the same accreditation as the Play-Offs).
Does anyone attend the All-Stars Championship even if their team doesn’t qualify for it? Personally I would. I book my tickets as soon as they’re released so don’t know who will be playing (not that there’s even been any doubt in Lions qualifying). I enjoy it because it’s an opportunity to see multiple teams play, it also has a celebratory feel to it. I suspect a hypothetical Play-Offs Weekend would be the same, so I’d attend… but only if it were in London (joking!).

It works great for the ice hockey at Notts. The fans all seem to stay and congregate and drink together in and around the ice stadium pubs etc

Extra costs involved (hotel) and if your team's not there the beer goes flat. Many would choose to watch on tv instead.

Had 3-4 great weekends in Birmingham for play-off finals, some when Lions were there some not! It was a real highlight of the basketball year. Met fans from other clubs & socialised with them over the weekend, as well as watching some great b'ball. I'd definitely go again.

agree with massiveridersfan cost is a major factor in deciding because of the location.Would definitely push the boat out if it were in Newcastle or Birmingham

The various weekends and finals in Birmingham have been good in the past. It's not too far to travel for me; plenty to do there; costs are not too bad. I'd consider going regardless of who is playing. London? Glasgow? Not a chance unless Riders are in there.

All-Stars Championship moved to Copper Box this year - was that to do with costs? I don't think a play-off weekend in London would attract sufficient fans to make it financially feasible at O2 - London too expensive on many levels (I know as I live here) for fans to attend - even if their team have qualified. Moving it to Copper Box would not be fair as home court advantage - presuming Lions qualify. I think Play-Offs stopped being a weekend event in Birmingham because of cost - though i may be wrong. I enjoyed the Play-Off weekends I attended in Birmingham - more so when we won!!

I went to the Newcastle-Leicester play-off final a couple of seasons back, as a Flyers fan.....
....but I won the tickets!!!
Selfishly I wouldn’t go unless my team were in it.

I absolutely love EIHL Playoff Weekend. I've gone every year for the past 5 years, only once have the Clan made it. You see some Clan fans selling their tickets but overall we still go down in huge numbers. It's a brilliant weekend if you can save up for it / afford it. The final on Sunday there was a brilliant game.
If the BBL did something would I go? Well I have a different set of friends at each sport, and I can't imagine my basketball friends would go. If I could get it fairly cheap I would consider it, but EIHL playoffs will always win for me, no matter the location.

I don’t know anything about ice hockey but is the British league really better in quality relative to Europe’s top leagues compared with the BBL? Or are there just fewer countries interested?
Incidentally, the BBL would be better if it was marketed at pissed up 20-somethings, overall.

Presumably a BBL Play-Off weekend would have to feature ‘one and done’ semi-finals, which I think most would consider a step backwards from the current 2-game aggregate format and the upcoming ‘best of 3’ format?

Used to always go to the finals weekend back in the early 2000’s and loved them even though my team was never there. Was fun to go as a neutral or adopt a team for the two days.
I would favour a return to that, would I go though if my team wasn’t there. Probably not, am older now and not sure would fork out for a weekend down in London if my team wasn’t there. Would definitely consider it if they were though and the club was able to put on a good deal.

I used to go and really enjoyed the weekend. The BBL did a package including hotel and it was a decent price
