But it is a replacement for the FBBL podcast? I don’t think they’ve done one of them since last month. I also like the ‘Below the Rim’ name.

A somewhat rose tinted view of Manchester basketball.
A few points; 1: the std at the Harris was very mixed and not as strong as it used to be 2: I went in the Saturday and the lowest attendance I’ve ever seen 3 still a great event. Credit magic no other junior club could run this. 4: like Callum Jones but seriously team of the decade. 5: the Manc man forgets Janes Jones won trophies at tigers. 3 in one year. 6: no mention of Bernardini fir team of decade. Just dumb

Still listening but when was Taylor King a centre? He was a 5 when he was at Leicester. They just didnt use the position in a conventional sense.

Hi all, thought id just identify myself rather than "The Manc". Always welcome feedback on what we do and Tall Guy I apologise whole heartedly for being the reason you didnt finish listening to a great show. However I felt it only appropriate to step up because what we are trying to do is help to bring the game to the forefront of peoples mind and away from old school forum bashing. In fact if we could get to a point where we can open up the lines for fans to call in and discuss topics it would be a dream come true as the profile and content of coverage of the game would become less under ground, clicky and pessimistic. The BBL is in a poor place right now in terms of its coverage and mediocrity seems to be the attitude towards it so we try to give a show based on what we see which I must add is maybe upto 10 games a week. We do it because we love the game and feel it deserves more respect than it get. Unfortunately unlike in Football, criticism is frowned upon, bias towards teams is unreal and the way fans perceive the game is just all over the place.
My response to having a rose tinted view on Manchester Basketball is as follows
1.The Standard of Basketball over the weekend was awesome. 2.What more could we do to get Manchesters Basketball Community realise that there is more than 1 gig in town? 3.An awesome event of which the hard work and planning is beyond comprehension and is done with very limited support and resources. 4.Callum Jones sets standards that any athlete could learn from and his name belongs in any BBL team of the decade. 5.The Manc is aware of "Janes Jones" achievements and was speaking in the context of his home team 6.A definite oversight. Not dumb just a lot of players and just 3 people voting.
Hope everyone listens this week where we focus on some huge positives in British Basketball. D1 aint no joke yknow!

Nice one for signing up, I might disagree with you on a few things but love the debate and you may be lucky to catch the 0.001% of the time I’m not absolutely correct, so keep it coming. BBL is in a poor place in terms of coverage? I dunno, I mean most games are available free of charge on YouTube and if not then livestats are done 99% of the time, and whilst there’s room for improvement therein I’d say coverage is as accessible as it ever has been. I remember frantically refreshing this page in 2005 to see if Cheshire had won a game away in Newcastle to all but clinch the league title - no livestats, the bbl website was only updated the day after and were it not for Les and co posting updates on here I’d have had to wait overnight to see what had happened. The leagues come a long way since, and I tend to refer to the league post the unsustainable halcyon days of the arenas (something which Manchester basketball fans should be all too familiar with) and the collapse of ITV digital, because whilst the standard was great it was a model built on sand. What do you mean by underground? Ill give the latest episode a whirl tomorrow (better than sat in silence behind my desk to be fair) so I can comment on the Harris tournament properly but generally speaking I can tell you Magic are well known - the problem with them at the moment is theres a conflict between the direction they want to go and the direction a paying basketball fan would want to go. Im not going to question the great Joe Forber. He’s a national treasure in my eyes. I understand that it’s his view the senior team should be home grown lads who’ve come through the magic system. No problem with that, it’s fine with me and has produced some absolutely fantastic players down the years. The viewing basketball fan wants the best standard of basketball he can get. I remember Jeff Jones magic team which had a young orlan jackman coming off the bench and a starting 5 of Stef Gill, Ste Gayle, Duncan Ogilvie, a yank (I want to say Hillary?) and Steve Boonham dominating D1. A truly brilliant team but with not much local talent. So which way do you go if you’re Joe? Neither is right or wrong but you can’t have one or two seniors in a team made up of primarily U18s and expect 000s of fans to come week in week out when giants are just up the road. I think Joes played it well as a development club because the game in this country is crying out for that more than another win now team, and really paying spectators isn’t his MO. Re Callum for team of the decade. I know Cal personally, he’s a great guy with a down to earth attitude and works hard. He’s not a full time basketball player either which makes it more impressive. And yes he’s talented. Team of the decade? Sorry no. What do you mean when you say “sets standards any athlete can learn from”? I mean, he hasn’t been on that many playoff making teams let alone trophy winners, so it’s not successful teams. If you mean personal standards he sets for himself, then whilst I’m not going to argue in terms of he’s a very useful and versatile player who has to graft harder due to his other commitments and has done so very well down the years, there’s so so many examples of this across the league it can’t by itself get you into a team of the decade. I’d refer you to the likes of Jamel Anderson, who despite what I believe to be limited ability, has absolutely made the best of himself by busting his gut every single day of his career since he started at Essex pirates and has ultimately had more success with the teams he’s been on and making international squads etc. A standard simply doesn’t stack up as a sole reason to make a team of the decade.

I actually enjoy the podcast and a lot is due to listening to areas that don’t get much coverage. Mystics and Magic men/ juniors. Some comments I agree with some I don’t but that’s fine. Do you really think the stag was awesome? Myerscough won reasonably easily picking their top squad minus the 3rd years who are no longer eligible. If used to be 2 3rd years allowed I think. So a strong if not completely myerscoughs best team. Did they beat global squad by 20 in the final? That certainly dispatched Gran Canaris pretty unceremoniously playing their bench. I thought Canaraus they were actually really well coached if somewhat under sized. Charnwood sent their first years who are a mixture of div 2 and national league central prem players. They’re 6-3 in national league. They cane 5th. Previous years we’ve had England 18s and touring teams from the US. Not div 1 but still decent enough to beat England 18s. Was there a Turkish b team as well who ripped it up in the past. However as I said I still thoroughly enjoyed it and credit magic for running it so well.
As a side note it does amuse me when I hear magic coaches midnight about losing players to academies after years of hoovering up all the best players in the north west

As a side note it does amuse me when I hear magic coaches midnight about losing players to academies after years of hoovering up all the best players in the north west Hi Faz, On the whole for the weekend there was some awesome Basketball. Myerscough obviously rely heavily on Amari Williams and Franklin who went on to win tournament MVP. When you have a guy that size playing the 5 it had a definate physiological impact on the other teams but I felt that some of the score lines made them seem stronger than they were. no doubt they are a great team but once other teams realised that they were gonna have to rely on speed and outside shooting it was too late! Global Squad were incredible especially as not one of those kids had met let alone played together but the Basketball IQ of these guys was unreal. Theres a few guys on that team with good futures ahead at some pro level. Jahmar White, Tobias Olsen, Carlos Nos and despite getting injured early in the tournament Cameron the PG looks loaded with potential. Canarias were indeed very well coached, very European approach and game type as you would expect but the team that won a lot of hearts was Elite academy. They have a young shooter called Max Gysbrechts who won the 3 point shootout Larry Bird Style (21/30in the semi) and then went off for 42 points a few hours later in their game. Also Vic De Wilde whos crazy buzzer beater you may have seen on social media is an outstanding shooter. I believe a lot of their squad were 16s so definitely impressive! They played some beautiful fundamental Ball and you can tell the standard of coaching is awesome. As far as Magic went I think even they would admit they should have won 2 games they lost. They definately gave Global squad a closer run than most and the guys played their hearts out. Josh Grant, Malachi Boakye-Yiadom, Saul May, Luke Gordos and Jason Ani played great and what Pete is doing with those guys is amazing. Great coach and a great guy. Lol-Re the Academy point-its a sticky subject for sure and this is MY opinion only and not that of the clubs! The problem I see is that Myerscough is a very attractive offer for young players and their parents. Great accommodation, great Basketball Facilities and of course some great coaches. But they almost get caught in the spell of the presentation and lure of going there without thinking about what they need to do when they are there. For me it has that feel of a US D1 college v;s JUCO or D2 ie kids go for the D1 option everytime and often dont think about whether they will play whereas at the other 2 schools they may start or have big minutes. I see and hear a few stories of Kids leaving Magic for SCO and then not playing or ending up as 3rd team etc and wanting to come back. For me a double edged sword because whilst this should make them hungrier to succeed and earn that spot, is it helping them become the best player they can be in the short time before most of them start to think about America for college? Its an ongoing debate I guess. The Magic academy has one of the best sets of coaches out there for sure but without the finances and facilities that SCO have.

Sco - too many kids not enough courts. It’s complete bollox that they have 2 teams in an AOC league hammering six form teams by 120 points plus. Not just their fault but the authorities really should let them play EABL and ABL.
It seems a very expensive way to get a BTEC.
I love your enthusiasm but still feel the standard was varied and not as strong as years gone by.
Magic have a very strong 6. They’ve always been a very strong team winning the under 13 nationals. I thought they should have beaten a young Charnwood team more comfortably than they did.
Regardless it’s a very good event that ive attended for a number of years.
