I think the new way to start the season with so many "nothing" Cup games has been dire, depressing and boring myself
The clubs had to come up with something in a hurry last season to make up for only having 2 league games against each team
But this surely can't be the way forward?
It's like everything uptil the quarter finals was just a warm up to the season starting. The Cup doesn't warrant that amount of time just to sort 8 quarter finallists
And in amongst all that Riders went 19 days without a game!
And 3 weeks without a home game!!
We need a plan B next season!
Need to have league games mixed right in around the Cup qualifying games at least

Yep im well and truly over it. Rocks were good then crap then ended alright. Rethink needed. I think the overall quality has been poor as well as teams knew that they could take their time to get ready for the real start of the season And the odd defeat here or there didn't really matter It won't help players either as the cup games become almost like trial games to see if they are good enough to play in the league Loads more chopping and changing at the start of the season than normal I seem to think?

I hate it - it has basically felt like an extended pre-season.
The North/South format is OK but we must have the league starting in September with Cup games dotted throughout the first few weeks. That would be so much better.

By this time last season in comparison most teams had played 10 or 11 league games and all the quarter finals of the cup had been played as well
Every game meaning something important
Even Riders had played 5 or 6 league games by now and cup quarter finals and all the European games on top
We've lost 3 games this season already which normally either puts us out of the cup or means we've made a shaky start to the league
As it is - none of those losses have meant anything at all
But I still don't like it

Yes it's been pretty rubbish. The quality of the games has been my biggest issue, lots of the games were played like preseason friendlies - low intensity and low quality 😔

Be interesting to see whether any changes are made next season Adding a few league games in and amongst the cup games seems an easy way of getting everybody more focussed and intense about being set and ready to perform from September onwards I think?

There has to be a better solution than what they came up with for this season? Why condense the league fixtures so much??

Move it to january and see how it works then That's slightly preferable to what we have now. Albeit most of January and feb games just become meaningless as well? But problem is then when do they play the Cup final? I think the January final date means they have to get these extra games in early. They can't really move that back? maybe the trophy would be better as the comp that needs mini leagues and those games could be more spread out through the entire season

As it is now whoever wins the cup won't get any more credit than any other year it was won. Despite all these extra games.

Why not play each other 4 times instead of 2? And go back to the old Cup format. If teams are crying out for more games, give them it. More home games = more revenue (in same period of time) = more to spend on players = improved quality players (potentially).
Probably too simplistic, but it does feel very stop/start at the moment and very difficult to build momentum, both for the teams and supporters.
I understand that it would create issues for some teams in securing their home venues, but surely it's worth a try? 22 games seems a very short league season to me.

We've had this discussion many times over the years on here... and once again, I tend to agree with most of the comments above. Will the Cup/Trophy/Championship setup change again for 20/21 ? Probably, maybe, perhaps ... but I'm not holding my breath !! ... we shall see

In the Elite Ice Hockey league they play 50-60 games per season. Can't understand why this isnt in place for the BBL.

I don't go any more but Nottingham Panthers used to get 4,000 to 8,000 fans at each home game Loads of fans wearing the jerseys as well. And they are expensive. Lots of students go and watch in Nottingham It's family entertainment just like basketball With the odd fight thrown in (nowhere near as many they used to get though) And if you want to see a proper riot take a look at these scenes at this legendary game between Nottingham and Sheffield (huge rivals) 2 mins in is when they all join in,

We went to a few panthers games at motorpoint and the crowds where around 6-7000. Cardiff is always sold out in their 3000 seater. Sheffield on a Wednesday night 2 weeks ago had 6000, with then 8300 on the Saturday versus Nottingham (big derby) yeah the smaller teams do attract far less, Manchester, Coventry, Fyfe. But Glasgow and Belfast attract on average over 3000. Think the BBL is years if not never going to get basketball teams in the scenario.

Interesting. But what I’m concluding from all this is that EIHL has more fans regularly attending games than the BBL does. So if the BBL were to increase the number of games a season to that of the EIHL it’s my suspicion the average game attendance would reduce, therefore also reducing the game/profit ratio. So I’d say the current number of games is probably calculated to be just about right, from a financial perspective.

I’d agree, 2 years ago when there was 11 teams they had total attandance figures for this league, playoffs and cup of over a million!!!! Insane how little coverage the EIHL league actually gets considering these figures. Not sure always how much life the BBL has in it.... when ever o watch either London team I see empty stands, money and sponsorship seems down for many teams. I struggle to see how the BBL grows, it’s sad. But we live in Devon and now would rather save and go watch a hockey game and drive 400 miles than a basketball game now

I must be in the minority. I’ve enjoyed it. Don’t agree there have been lots of meaningless games. In the south we had Surrey and London with a winner takes all, Flyers losing to Lions in their last game, missing out on a home QF.
Some teams might have saved a bit of budget by waiting til now to sign players, but that carries a risk, as they need to bed-in, etc.
It could make for a better league competition, with all teams really prepared, all their imports sorted rather than work-permit issues in Sept meaning they arrive late.
I guess in an ideal world we’d have 16 teams, playing 30 league games, and then the cups as straight knock-outs. But we only have 12 teams.
