The league title was already tainted this season due to playing only 20 games, giving a title to a team who've played 15 games is totally ludicrous. Lions have played one game less than Rocks, they win that and then beat Rocks which gets them the h2h, then Lions are in pole position for the title. That alone means you can't award the league title to Rocks.

Plus the article mentions the Irish league declaring 1st place as Champions, same should apply here as even with games in hand no one can overtake us. Except that multiple teams can still overtake Rocks. Because they are only top by a very small margin and the season is 20 games long, not 15. If Riders won out from here they'd finish ahead of Rocks. I just don't see why there would need to be an asterisk next to it, again it brings connotations of cheating. No it doesn't. An asterisk can denote any number of things. In the event that Rocks were officially awarded the league the asterisk in this instance would be a significant one. Specifically, it would denote that Rocks didn't actually win the league that year. If it was any of your teams in the same situation I'd say you'd be wanting the title as well. I honestly wouldn't. Because it wouldn't mean anything. At the end of the day it probably doesn't matter all that much what the official decision is here. If the decision was made to award Rocks with some metal pot that they didn't earn it wouldn't persuade me to actually acknowledge them as 2019/20 BBL champions. And if this poll is a decent representation of fan opinion then 61% of people would feel likewise. If the poll was carried out exclusively among neutrals I suspect the percentage would be higher than that. People will make their own minds up about this regardless of what the official decision turns out to be.

So if one game into the football Premier League season the season is aborted and cancelled and on day one Watford win their game 7-0 and nobody else wins by such a margin, are they worthy winners? They can't be overtaken... 75% of the season has been played though.. And a basketball season is 100% long. All it takes is one of the remaining five games to be lost by Glasgow and winning the title suddenly isn't in their hands. That doesn't tell me they're worthy winners yet. I wouldn't mind seeing them win it, genuinely. Just not like this because it would be pointless and unfair on the teams with a shot to overtake them legitimately.

Think our statement is great, until the last paragraph sadly. I actually don't want Rocks to win a tap based on that last paragraph alone. Its a shame because the fans deserve it (its been a while lets face it!), but not like this. Last paragraph just screams of desperation.

If Rocks didn't put out the last paragraph and the league awarded them the title, then fine. It wouldn't feel like a "real" title but we would accept it of course and I'm sure the majority of BBL fans would just shrug and say it is what is. However now if we get awarded the championship then it will feel like the league gave in to a child tantruming and stomping their feet until they got their own way. It would feel even less real.

Great point. We'd all be ****ing furious if our team lost a game down by a couple of possessions with ten minutes still to play.

Spot on.
I love the irony of them going on about "sporting integrity", whilst showing precisely no integrity or human decency whatsoever.

That statement alone has made Glasgow my second least favourite team in the league. The irony is unbelievable. The great thing is though, that statement could've been them talking themselves out of the title. What justice that'd be.

"the league". I keep reading that. I'm aware I'm a pedant (and I've been called far worse things) but the league is the clubs, it's not a body such as Basketball England, it's a group of 11 clubs with vested interests. And Lions & Riders aren't going to give the title to Rocks while they still have the league title's destiny in their hands, and it's hard to Wolves rolling over either. What the clubs will have to decide is if it's worth finishing this season in Sept/Oct (maybe Nov) before commencing the next one. Maybe if they could stage the play-off final at the O2 - recouping the cash they're losing on May's final being off - that might appeal to more of the clubs. But there is no authority that's going to decide this. It's good old fashioned democracy and self interest. I'm considering breakfast drinking

I think there was a certain amount of inevitability that Smilie would do this. His time at Rocks hasn't exactly been a success, he was bound to grasp at straws. The fact that 94.27% of people wouldn't take this "championship" seriously won't worry him in his little world.

Just in case Rocks see sense and remove/edit that statement, this is what they thought was acceptable and sporting... GLASGOW ROCKS OFFICIAL STATEMENT MARCH 17, 2020442 The British Basketball League (BBL) today announced that due to the ongoing situation regarding Covid-19, the 2019/20 Championship will be postponed until further notice. The exact wording of their statement can be found here www.bbl.org.uk/bbl-to-postpone-remainder-of-2019-20-season/Glasgow Rocks believe that the right thing to do for the sport and more importantly for public health would be to bring the season to an end immediately. This would give the BBL and its clubs a period of 6 months to regroup, recapitalise and manage the expectations of staff, players, coaches, fans and sponsors, rather than postponing the inevitable. We have a duty of care to all our staff, many of whom are young men a long way from home for the first time in their lives, and like many others feel very uncomfortable at this uncertain time. They would much prefer to get themselves home to their loved ones. Nobody at Glasgow Rocks believes there is more basketball to be played this season. The season is over and to say otherwise for political or financial reasons is foolhardy. We have completed 75% of our scheduled Championship fixtures and are clear league leaders with an 80% win percentage. We strongly believe that in the spirit of sporting integrity the season should be ended now and that Glasgow Rocks are announced as Championship winners for season 2019/20. To do otherwise flies in the face of sporting integrity. Glasgow Rocks

The more i read our statement the more the desperation and outcry from duncan is clear. A certain football team he supports are calling to be awarded a championship too. We've had a great season. Never in my time following the rocks (18 seasons) have i ever not wanted us ti be awarded the league.

Don’t wish them any success in the future. Feel sorry for the good fans but that’s just how it is.
What a classless and pathetic statement in a time where fair play and integrity should win out. That final paragraph is embarrassing and tragic. Deep down they know they’d never win it and that’s evident in their desperate statement.
As they stated, we’re 75% of the way through the season. There’s still one quarter to go. Still time for that famous Rocks ‘second half, third or fourth quarter meltdown’ that cost them game after game in the last five years or more.

Latest press release by Glasgow Rocks:
"It's very clear that we ought to be declared league champions now before other teams can beat us so this matter can be laid to rest. Everyone knows it should be our turn by right because Eagles, Riders and Lions have selfishly hogged that title in recent years. It's just not fair if we aren't awarded the title a.s.a.p. (Stamps foot petulantly) If the rest of the BBL clubs don't see sense or reason then we won't let them play with our balls or on our court next season. And anyway, our owner's bigger than other club owners so he'll sort it unless that trophy is in our cabinet by tomorrow at the latest."
Glasgow Rocks - leading the way in integrity for all to see
PS We should probably be given the 'Most Desperate Club Award' too btw. (Riders clung to it for years and years but it is time to hand that one over to us)

Yes, still on the Rocks website. I feel for the Rocks fans in this. What a piece of work this man is, a complete embarrassment to himself, his club, the fans and the wider BBL. Every team down to 8th place Bristol could mathematically still overtake them if we were still playing. I agree this season should be just written off.

Just a few quotes ... for sh1ts and giggles "I desperately want Rocks to pick up some silverware" "I'd say we should get it, ... , I don't see it as a tainted title." "Personally, I have no problem with it." "Yeah give it to Rocks for me. Clear winners by virtue of only 3 regular season losses to date." "I would award it to Rocks and Liverpool with a big * each." "Yep Rocks should have the Title - if they are top of the league at the end of the season " "There is precedence in other sports for declaring a team champions after the league was called off." "If the Rocks are declared league winners then the BBL might as well declare them the Playoff winners too." "if BBL declares the season as finished then the Rocks by virtue of being in first should be declared champions." "I'm pretty sure in 5 years time, nobody on here will care about THAT year when Rocks were awarded the title because of the zombie apocalypse" "Judging by the poll at the top of the page “we” don’t want a winner, so there should be no champions" "Awarding the league to the Rocks at this point would be farcial" "This is a bit desperate. While I feel sorry for Rocks, this season wasn't close to being finished." "Rocks statement is classless and an embarrassment. I know its not reflective of every Rocks fan, but jesus thats pathetic" "Think our statement is great, until the last paragraph sadly." "I actually don't want Rocks to win a tap based on that last paragraph alone.... Last paragraph just screams of desperation." "if we get awarded the championship then it will feel like the league gave in to a child tantruming and stomping their feet until they got their own way" "I love the irony of them going on about "sporting integrity", whilst showing precisely no integrity or human decency whatsoever."
