In the last ten years I’ve seen the following franchises fail: Mersey Tigers, Essex Pirates, Birmingham Knights, London Royals, Leeds Force whilst Worthing and Durham chose to drop out the league and play national league. Solent Kestrels reach the trophy final this year and are clearly better than a number of bbl teams whilst a number of EBL 1 teams are also probably better than a number of BBL teams. So the BBL dosnt have all the best teams competing in the league
Cheshire have almost ceased operating and the current climate it’s suggested 6 clubs could be in trouble.
Serious question is the league viable and does it serve any more purpose than the EBL.
I personally think we’d have a better competition without the bbl existing.
I remember an article where the standards for having a franchise we’re laid out. I wonder how many clubs have achieved the required standards or come close to them.
It pertained to wages, academies venues and some other criteria I can’t remember. Credit to Eagles, Riders and Flyers fir their homes and proposed venue. However any other venues are clubs benefiting from uni links, major sport events or a better leisure facility.
So really what is the purpose of the bbl

Hmmm, just as I was trying to be positive.
I do agree with some of your points. But while swapping Kestrels for Giants would certainly improve the BBL, I don't think any of the other 13 would be competitive with their "current" teams. Solent are exceptional, though. I get many of your criticisms of the BBL, the lack of standards for certain things are shocking. But then when I suggested that Flyers are taking the piss that they are still playing in a school gym people were up in arms. Relegation would certainly shake things up, no tanking on the season at Christmas if you thought you'd end up playing at Braunstone Leisure Centre or Barking Abbey. That Chester or whatever they're called these days can stumble on and still be competitive is pretty telling about the standard of it. But would you really want the top division of basketball in this country run by Basketball England? They have continuously shown they're not fit for purpose and they certainly won't enforce standards. They'd probably go along with the idea of having a 20-game season and no cups as it would give them less work to do. Maybe the clubs don't always do the greatest job of organising their own competition, but I'd take an invite into a BBL II in a heartbeat, the women did.

You know a lot more about EB as an organisation than myself. The standards are variable so why have them. Few clubs have meaningful academies and there obviously isn’t the money to achieve the desired standards of venues and wage rates. So don’t have them cut costs and have one organisation. I like the idea of promotion and relegation keeping more games competitive. You know the standards in div 1 better than myself I was just looking at the margins of victory for Solent against the lines of Hemel, Worthing , Loughborough. Hudson, Ulph, Lufadeju May not have set the world alight but haven’t looked out of place coming out if the EBL into the BBL. There’s no television deal, limited publicity, variable standards, clubs failing on and off the court so what have the bbl achieved?

I don't think we should judge D1 on Solent, either positively or negatively. They're a bit of a freak, it all came together perfectly. In another season a couple of injuries may have seen them lose a couple of close games and either squeak home to win the league or miss out. It could easily be argued that last season's title was decided by some dodgy fixture scheduling.
I've covered a lot of this in the BBL2 thread, but for all its faults the BBL does a better job running its league than BE does running D1. During my time running Leopards BE have managed to End its partnership with the BBL regarding staging finals. So we've managed to play finals in venues no better than our home. Start a Final Four weekend that was hugely popular with the clubs, and then end it. Cut our number of guaranteed home games in consecutive seasons without proper consultation. Bring in virtually nothing in the way of sponsorship. We get three basketballs per year. Spend a fortune rebranding. Spend another fortune on a website that is actually worse than its predecessor. Spend yet another fortune on moving to Manchester. And - finally, though I bet more will come to me - end any pretence of democracy with the closure of the Competitions Committee which gave clubs someone to represent them.
I'll take the BBL over BE to run the league we play in any day
