Thats likely going to be the short term use for many sports halls from what I can see from various reports
Any PE or Sports from September will likely be restricted to outdoor and any large indoor spaces at school or nearby leisure facilities will end up being used for extra classrooms with social distancing in place
For the outdoor physical activity the kids do its going to be limited as won't be any changing facilities available
Even using sports halls etc the schools wont have enough space and will be part time education
This is going to be an absolute nightmare for the quality of kids education and a nightmare for all involved to manage

Schools don't know what they'll be doing yet and are just making plans for best/worst/most likely scenarios. Realistically we've got no idea what the government advice will be by that time so, for basketball clubs, we are better off waiting and seeing what happens and making plans as best we can for each of those scenarios (including holding off on return indefinitely). If you remember the first schools learnt of exams being cancelled this Summer was when it was muttered as an aside in parliament and the primary schools return this week was cancelled at last minute so knowing what's going to be happening in 3 months is optimistic. For clubs now is the time to look critically at what they've been doing and plan to come back more focused/organised/effective.

The biggest problem for schools is space to social distance and hence the suggestion of using indoor sports facilities. Not just at the school's but nearby. Their assembly halls of course will also become classrooms rather than places to attend together. For some the assembly hall is where they would normally do indoor sports etc. I imagine Riders arena will become a number of spaced out class seating areas for the College they share with for the short term at least. Maybe there will be some financial compensation for Riders if that happens Large indoor spaces become very important and sought after for education if nothing else. At the Universities as well.

Like I said schools don't know what they'll be doing yet and are just making plans for best/worst/most likely scenarios. I work for a college that leads an academy trust, we've been in this week, I've spoken to the principal around this, spoken to headteachers of couple of local primary schools whose kids play for my club, spoken to the 4 different venues my club uses. No point in basketball clubs/fans creating elaborate hypothetical situations now when we don't know what government response will be. Time to control the what we can control, focus on volunteer/coach/marketing development so when we do return we are coming back in better than ever been before.

URF, why did you massively edit your original post?
The (key) point in the BBC report that you've ignored is that a lot of this depends on the 2m distancing rule. There's plenty of different industries pushing for that to be relaxed. As it'll help actually get the schools reopened - something the teaching unions have successfully blocked as it's much nicer sitting at home - there's a good chance it'll go down to a metre within the next ten weeks. Talking about 15 kids in a class ignores the fact that aren't enough teachers. Primary schools might be able to go down to 20 pupils per class (if there's somewhere to put them) by using the TAs, Senior schools have a handful LSAs (many of whom can't or won't take a class), a couple of cover supervisors (I'm reviewing my rates) and around 20% extra capacity due to teachers' free periods.
But, hey, we got another "sky falling in"

When primary schools were allowed to open 2 weeks ago with 2 metre social distancing in place only 25 per cent of kids who could go back to school actually went back
If the people talking about 1 metre social distancing think that people will accept that and everything goes back to normal I think they will be in for a shock
They will open but not even have enough customers or kids at school for 2 metre social distancing
It's not about what's needed to be economically viable for businesses or schools it's about what is safe
1 metre social distancing outside is safer than 2 metre social distancing inside
But the people asking for 1 metre social distancing want it inside!!
It ain't going to happen without a vaccine
If we tried it we would all have to be in strict lockdown again a few weeks later
Look at the news last night
7 states in the US already having a second spike in cases. 30 per cent plus more infections this week than the week before and rising
Opening up with 2 metre social distancing is risky. Take that inside its 20 times more risky.
Take that inside and reduce to 1 metre and it's a recipe for disaster
No way our government will allow it
Australia have pretty much eradicated the virus
Their next stage is allowing gatherings indoors
With virtually no virus in the country they are going to allow events for upto 100 guests max.
On the proviso each guest has 4 square metres space around them throughout
And they are in a way better position than us
But they want to keep it like that
They are also going to allow outdoor sport with stadiums at 25 per cent capacity max with social distancing upto a maximum of 10,000 spectators
Look to them for what we may be allowed to do gradually but only when we have got cases much much lower
Right now we are miles away from being able to do what they can try to do safely
Anyway back to the reason for posting. Someone the other week said sports halls would become gyms.
I'm reading many will become classrooms and it's large indoor spaces that can be made safe for education that are going to be like gold dust from September onwards

A primary school teaching assistant I know was sent her timetable for the following week (a couple of weeks ago) and every class she was supporting was happening outside in 3 different outdoor learning areas they had at the school With the kids rotating around those 3 areas

IRF - I can imagine this might happen. If it does it will be a problem. However, and I think this is Herseys point with a lot of your posts, it is all supposition and yet you address it like it is irrefutable fact. It is not fact.
My club play at a college. Our Head Coach works at the College in the Sports team. They have not been told ANYTHING about the sports facilities being used in this way. Our Chairman is a PE Teacher. Ditto. We have 5 teachers playing for the club.....3 of whom are secondary school PE teachers and none of them have heard about it either.
What they all have in common is like me they would not be massively surprised if it did happen even in short term. It is not fact. Not written in stone.
As a basketball coach and player I would love to see basketball safely return. As a parent I would much prefer to see kids back at school learning though and if that was the choice then I would accept it.

I could talk you through, in depth, what 9/10 schools/colleges around here are doing right now but it's not what will be happening in 3 months, even if everything else stays exactly the same (which it won't). Pointless as basketball fans/clubs going too deeply into what the government response will be or what schools doing right now. As I say for me what we can/should be doing is looking at how we can change to be better when we're eventually back. As an example, the local central venue league to us has been working with our club and the other clubs who play at the centre to create a new Youtube channel- www.youtube.com/channel/UCGJB_9JBDJ0vx3yW9ui8x2Q/ It's been used to celebrate the history of players at the centre, talk to former players who are now playing professionally/in states, talk to coaches at the centre, host club discussion chats etc. Recently we've spoken to a couple of coaches, Tom Stansfield and John Allerston, who have been involved in the talent programme for England/North West and are now coaching abroad. Off the back of this clubs are in discussion about creating a common coaching curriculum across the clubs at the centre (impacting 800+ players at minimum) to aid future player development. We've struggled to get the local National league clubs involved but regardless of that we'll be coming back as a more unified, organised and determined group who have already begun to build a common brand and improve individual club's brands. For me, that's where our focus should be now as a basketball community. Celebrate our past, plan for our future.

Regarding schools, by the time September 1m could well be viable. You have to remember this is 2 and a half months away and with cases dropping all the time now it could well be possible. Looking at BE's plan of an Autumn return where that falls in Autumn we don't know but you would have to hope by then schools would at least be 1m.

As someone who works in a school, trust me we are not party to any advanced information. We only hear about it when Boris, Gavin etc announce it. And then we have to wait for the full guidance (usually 7pm on Saturdays and the like!) to arrive. Boris discussing the level of risk recently leads me to think that 1m distancing is coming soon as is a plan for summer catch-up programmes - but again I'm only speculating. We haven't used our hall yet, lack of staff is a bigger issue!

Shops struggle, public transport can't get people work, the leisure sector can't operate etc etc. And schools not opening keeps some people at home rather than working.

No chance of 1 metre distancing being allowed inside in UK
They don't even do that in countries with way less Covid than us
Outside they may relax the rules more

I see free speech is - again - being curtailed to save URF from being called out over the nonsense he spouts. Still no explanation why he changed his opening post so that the first reply is to what he originally posted rather than what's now showing.
I can see how Sam got away with altering my posts to prove his point.

And if so what have I changed as I haven't got a clue what hersey is talking about? Ive now successfully blocked Hersey so i wont see any of his replies. Im sure it will prove to be the best thing ive ever done on any sports forum Mods - if he personally attacks me on here (as he is prone to do) without me able to defend myself - im relying on you guys to deal with it for me please

Your main point is the one around sports hall usage as a fact which I, and a few others on here, have disagreed with from the viewpoint of people involved in education. As a longtime lurker on the board think both you and Hersey make some really interesting points at times but I have no interest in the endless bickering between you both so glad to hear that is now resolved even if it's via blocking.

And God knows what I'm supposed to have changed above that's so important? Will be great to not have to respond to Hersey. And as my posts upset him so badly would be a good idea for him to block me as well. But don't hold your breath on that happening

Without starting another thread an interesring thing IMO I saw yesterday is that sports teams playing behind closed doors are offering fans the chance to pay to have a life size cardboard cutout of themselves in the stadium "watching" the matches
For my football team (Forest) it's £20 to buy one which I actually think is a reasonable price and isn't profiteering
I like the idea

He would like to. But for that to happen indoor you need to have the disease almost eradicated and a way more disciplined population than we've got. Countries in way better position than us aren't even risking 1 metres indoors

Announced this morning he's ordered a review of the 2m rule. Here's my Nostradamus prediction: everyone can do whatever they bloody like! 2m is dead once that review is published.
