Joe Icansitonthebench is back for another season. Is it time for the rosters thread now KO25 Absolutely nothing against the guy personally, he actually seems quite a nice guy actually, but I've never really understood why he's still Lions' captain other than for longevity reasons.

Captains of basketball teams( & many sporting clubs) are often chosen for their attitude, commitment & heart rather than being the best player. Joe's efforts for Lions have been excellent over the years, his commitment rubs off on others, he can help generate extra effort when comes off the bench, he doesn't let his teammates slacken off & let's them know when necessary if they fall below certain standards. Last season on more than one occasion he diffused a situation when Ovie was getting frustrated with officials which could have cost Lions dearly. Is he a starter, no, but he fully deserves the chance to captain Lions in Europe.

Riders did well while Barry Lamble was captain. I spoke to Tyler Bernardini a bit about being Captain at Riders. Loads more to it than what goes on the court. He had to organise players re training times and kit needed and get involved in rotas for them for work with sponsors and the community and schools Discipline and fines etc I guess the key link between the management of the club/coach and the players Lots of responsibility. Looking after mental health and wellbeing of team mates a big thing at the moment as well wherever possible

But are you saying someone like Justin Robinson couldn't also do that, because from what I've heard he also brings all that to the table, as well as being a star player on court. I suppose all I was saying is that I suspect longevity plays a big factor in why Joe is still captain (not saying he doesn't do any of the things you've said he does).

I'm basically saying being a captain is a job on and off the court. And lots of pain in the arse jobs to deal with off the court that Justin may or may not want to get involved in at this stage of his career. You certainly don't need to be the best player or even a starter to deal with many of the jobs a captain has to deal with

I'm sure Justin could do all those things, however just being a star player doesn't mean you should get the captain's position at the expense of someone who has already got it. Perhaps if Joe retires, he's the natural successor but I would never take the captain's armband away from a person who is doing a very good job in that role. When Joe was 1st captain, I said I thought Rod Brown would be better, as the responsibility of captain seemed to have an effect on Joe's game, I felt he was trying a little too hard. He's absolutely grown in to the job & proved me wrong.

Joe bless him has always been slow and carrying too much around the waist. But his IQ was ok. Sadly his day has gone a few years ago.
I think it’s well known he only gets resigned as he has team mates staying in his yard saving a couple of grand a month in apartment rental?

I'm sorry you didn't make the team. Another team you didn't make. It's almost a pattern is emerging...
