Wow. That's a new chapter for his book. A sad way for his career to end especially as he appears to have lost the bet!.

Wow. That's a new chapter for his book. A sad way for his career to end especially as he appears to have lost the bet!. So basically he bet against Worthing Thunder (in a BBL Trophy game) whilst playing for Worthing Thunder. Not really much he can defend there, so I'm not surprised he's not appealing. "Suspended from playing or attending all basketball in Great Britain for six weeks" - Good luck finding any basketball to play or attend in Great Britain in the next six weeks!

The link isn’t working, has it been taken down?
Also, how do we know he bet against himself? They played 2 Trophy games in January and I would assume there were bigger odds for beating Manchester than losing to Solent?
Unless it says something in the article that won’t open?

Yes, the article has been removed for some reason. When I was able to read it I'm fairly sure it said he bet against Worthing.

The story has mysteriously disappeared from the BE site. Indeed, both of their games were in Jan. So we don't know how he bet.

I found it cached in my browser... Mods - if it's inappropriate I post this please feel free to delete it. Former Worthing Thunder player Alex Owumi, has been suspended from playing or attending all basketball in Great Britain for six weeks and fined £1,000 for betting offences in relation to basketball matches.
The British Basketball Federation, in conjunction with FIBA, were engaged with the Gambling Commission Sports Betting Intelligence Unit, the GB betting industry, and the IOC Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions, to complete this investigation.
The incidents took place in January 2020 and involved betting on handicap markets on a match involving Worthing Thunder, for the opposition to win a BBL Trophy match, as well as betting on another basketball match in the same event.
This is contravention of the FIBA Code of Ethics, as detailed at the time of the offences. It is also a breach of the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions.
Following communication with Mr Owumi, a Disciplinary Panel reviewed all information available and issued the following sanctions under the FIBA Regulations:
A fine of £1000. Suspension from playing in any licensed league in Great Britain and from attending any basketball match involving a club that he is an official of, for a period of six weeks. Mr Owumi has been afforded the opportunity to appeal and has not taken up this option.
FIBA, as the World Governing body, have the right to impose further sanctions under its regulations.
FIBA, the British Basketball Federation, its members, namely Basketball England, Basketball Scotland and Basketball Wales, as well as the BBL and WBBL, the professional leagues, are jointly committed to a zero tolerance to betting and corruption in basketball, in Great Britain.

I like Alex and I have no knowledge of these events at all but doesn't a 6 week ban for betting against the team you are playing for seem really very lenient ?

If FIBA, BE, BBL etc are against gambling, why are they accepting money from gambling companies and promoting gambling?

And there's the question plenty of sports associations could be asked.

If FIBA, BE, BBL etc are against gambling, why are they accepting money from gambling companies and promoting gambling? They're against people trying to fix games not the gambling. Everyone knows the rules.

If FIBA, BE, BBL etc are against gambling, why are they accepting money from gambling companies and promoting gambling? They love gambling. It brings in good money. They don't like players gambling though, specifically on games they'e playing in. It doesn't do any good for the integrity of the sport. This applies to all sports, not just basketball of course.

If he really bet against his own team, as the report says then I'm shocked the punishment is so little. If he didn't then I can't see why he didn't appeal, unless there are other infractions which might come to light if there is further investigation. I'm sure there are sportsman who bet on games they are playing in, but they need to take the consequences when they get caught, but if the consequences are as minimal as this, then it's probably worth it for them to manufacture a result/ scoring sequence etc. & hope the don't get caught.
Bigz seems to suggest this is not uncommon but surely betting against your own team is! 2 points down, 3 point open shot to win the game & you miss, how would your team mates/coaching staff feel if it came to light you'd missed the shot for your own gain?

Made slightly more complicated by the fact he bet against his team in handicap betting. So he could win the bet but his team still do what was needed to win through the game. Hope that makes sense. For a bet like that it wouldn't surprise me if others were somehow involved but he gets the ban and fine because he put the money on. Possible only a small bet as the bookies aren't going to take big bets or big risks on such low level basketball. Their bet limits will be very low on single match outcomes Which may be why the punishment is so lenient It may well have been a fun bet more than a major scam against the bookies

Hoopsfix saying he bet against his own team, which if this is the case, six weeks is a joke of a ban.
Although I doubt many coaches will be queueing up for him if he's going to throw games.

Hes claiming innocence on twitter But he didn't appeal!! You've got to ask yourself why!

Not that I'm sticking up for him in any way, I literally know nothing about the situation. Possibly it's not worth doing an appeal if you've retired, but who knows!

I'm rather disappointed he's retired, it would have given plenty of opportunity to heckle him!!
