I can see the beginning of the end if the Government expect this money to be repaid. There simply isnt the means.

Im aware of the amounts but a loan is a loan and will need repaying whether its 4m or 40 quid. And I dont think the leagues able.

Yep. He seems to be blissfully unaware of the basic fact that without this money there would be no season and lots of players would be out of work.
Sometimes I wonder where people think the money to run this sport can come from with no fans in the crowd.

Joe I voicing his displeasure on Twitter.... Yeah that was a strange one for me. Surely he should be grateful as a player....

Yeah, I really like the players that engage on SM but there seems to be a disconnect with some of them at times with not Realising that the freaks who talk about basketball on whatsbev and SM are fairly essential on them making a living and that clubs need income to pay them so when the freaks can’t watch there’s not money in the pot to give them... more freaks, more money 🤷♂️ No freaks then you need government bailout otherwise you need to get a different job unfortunately

Yes, I find it hard to believe that the £4M (£3M for BBL/WBBL) is a loan given how positive the response from the BBL has been. A few quotes from the BBL press release: "The British Basketball League is delighted with the support announced today for basketball by the Government."BBL Chairman Sir Rodney Walker said: “We are very pleased with the announcement by the Minister for Sport, Nigel Huddleston MP, today."“DCMS did give us the confidence to start the 2020/21 season a few weeks ago, with a commitment of support, and we are particularly pleased with the level now confirmed.”Matt Neville, chair of Basketball England said: “This is fantastic news for the whole sport of basketball."If this money was a loan and had to be paid back, or even had to mostly be paid back, I don't think we'd be seeing responses like that of the above?

Unless they have no plans to pay it back anyway!

you would have to think this announcement by EIHL with regards DCMS funding has the same caveat for the BBL - the announced funding is for clubs based in England only and under the Barnett formula the devolved governments received some cash and it is then up to them if they use it for sport support or for other purposes. www.eliteleague.co.uk/article/961-update-regarding-dcms-winter-survival-package?fbclid=IwAR3fxt9YerSbc5ol9GAN5XuUlwQEh1fv4u36YPxMlxgvA66c6pcQMR-rNuASo in BBL case - Rocks will need to hope Scot Gov decide to use some of it it for giving to SportScotland to use and they and sees BBL Rocks as a suitable recipient for it in similar way to whatever SportEngland decide. Lets hope no bridges been burned by anyone earlier in the pandemic.

Rocks play under the bbl which is an english regulated league. Rocks aren't re!lly affiliated to basketball scotland?
On the flip the scot gov seem to have zero notion of interacting with sports and have already put the begging bowl out to westminster

Rocks should relocate to Milton Keynes. MK Rocks. It's a good name. They can get their funding and save on travel.

yes but unless things have changed in last coupple of years, BBF dont manage player registrations or transfers - so unless things have changed, BE does all registrations and international clearance registrations for all BBL sides including the Rocks.

The Scot Gov has today announced how they will be distributing the money they have for supporting sport that is not allowed spectators in. Basketball is in the final £1m and shares that with many others.
The Scottish government has announced a funding package of £55m to help spectator sports through the coronavirus pandemic. First minister Nicola Sturgeon says £30m will be made available to Scottish football and £20m to rugby union. Of the £30m for football, £20m will in the form of loans to Scottish Premiership clubs and the remaining £10m in grants for lower league clubs. Further discussions on the distribution will take place later. The £20m for rugby will be £5m in loans and £15m in grants, while ice rinks and horse racing will get £2m each.
The remaining £1m will be divided among basketball, motorsports, netball and other sports.

I see rugby's done nicely out of it. Again. I hope Rocks will be okay, and get at least 80 percent of what they want.

as nice as Rugby has done, so has Curling as while they call it Ice Rinks there are few that can do multi ice sport so suspect a big influence on that £2m is the middle class sport and not the youth sport or casual skating sessions.
On first thought thinking ice sports and places where hockey or skating are done as well as curling I came up: Council owned (may be leisure trust managed though): Dumfries, Auchenharvie, Dundee, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Stirling, Greenock Private owned: Ayr, Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh PLC owned: Braehead (part of shopping centre)
The Scottish Curling site says there are 22 locations you can curl - looks like a mix of private owned curling dedicated and maybe a couple more local authority ones.
Our local ice rink is private owned and managed by curlers and they rent ice to skaters and hockey. The local paper ran last week the owners need £85k to avoid complete closure - big fuss locally as they lifted the ice even though youth skaters and youth hockey could restart this weekend, Adult curlers unlikley to start at all in the 2020-21 season and they make the decisions.
Hopefully BBL Rocks have got what they need to get them through this season and regroup for 2021-22. Same for WBBL Pride if they were part of the bid.

The way i read the release was it was for clubs and ngbs where theyve missed out on spectators. Not sure many ice rinks outside of the elite leagues scottish clubs will have access.
Netball getting a 100k straight to sirens. Probabaly then pride will get the same.

Netball getting a 100k straight to sirens. Probably then pride will get the same. It is Ice Rinks that are getting the £2M - found the Scot Gov details on their website. Ice-Hockey is one of the sports sharing the £1m for other sports Also found on there, of the £1m to other sports, Basketball is allocated £300,000 of which I would assume the bulk is BBL Rocks and the smaller sum WBBL Pride Frpm Scot Gov page: Basketball £300,000 in grants Netball £100,000 in grants Motorsport £400,000 in grants Ice Hockey and Ice rinks £200,000 in grants for ice hockey and £2 million in grants for ice rinks
