@ltfan. Thank you. No I wasn't aware of that. Have you seen the production by Solent Kestrels in the L Lynch Trophy? More than one camera. They did a really good job and it was all done by students at the university. Yes, I did. Considering it was done by university students with next to no budget it was really impressive. Unfortunately though it simply wasn't of the quality that would be required to be broadcast by the likes of the BBC or Sky. For that you really need a professional company producing the coverage, like how the BBL use Televideo (www.televideo.co.uk/credits), and that comes at considerable cost.

Ok Grandad. ?? Just winding you up at how long you must have been following British basketball. I include myself in that too though... I go back as far as the BBC Grandstand days of British basketball, not as far as the Channel 4 days though.

Not much is done on " next to no budget" at Solent.
The guy who did the Oaklands' group of the Lynch Trophy had multiple cameras and did all the production on his own. It was very impressive. Obviously he had a brilliant colour commentator for the middle set of games

LTFan my memory must be a bit hazy (or considering my roots Hayesey) as my recollection is the Grandstand days predated C4 coverage. However what I would add to this debate is the BBC has bugger all sport on. The BBL would sell its product for a small price. The BBC should have a mandate to support minority sports. Basketball feels like a minority sport in UK......shouldn’t it be a no brainer?
I would add though the days of the Sky coverage have always felt like the golden age of the BBL.

Pretty sure the BBL's coverage of the National Cup final spanned the time C4 covered the top flight, they certainly overlapped. According to this, it started in 1979. I'm not sure of the exact dates C4 had their Monday night slot.

C4 coverage started when the channel was launched in 1982.

The coverage of the Lynch Trophy on the NBL YouTube channel was very good - full credit to all those involved. But having said that unfortunately it still wasn't of the quality required to interest the likes of the BBC or Sky for broadcast on their channels.

Maybe I'm incorrectly referring to all BBC coverage as Grandstand. What I was getting at is that British basketball has been on the BBC since the Channel 4 years (not counting the most recent BBC coverage). I'm sure I saw some British basketball games on the BBC in the late 90s - just finals, not weekly games. EDIT: I've posted this before, but here's a history of basketball on the BBC, dating back to the 1940s - genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?adv=0&q=basketball&media=all&yf=1923&yt=2009&mf=1&mt=12&tf=00%3A00&tt=00%3A00#searchAnd this evidences that British basketball was on the BBC until the early 2000s (as recent as 2004) - when it was still branded as Sunday Grandstand on BBC Two. genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/2fdc6e8c069844ce8c5fd2d5d838be0f

But but but british basketball is a poor product. Nobody would want to do that. 🤔
Absolutely brilliant news. Hopefully the big games and not an attempt to cover all teams. Well done bbl

Very good news. I wonder if this will generate more corporate sponsorship of the league and trophy like it was in the 90s. And of course increased exposure for clubs. BBL has to keep its product at a good level and hence the cover all clubs or best games debate begins. Personally I would have a BBL premier and BBL 2 with the best EBL clubs.
