A tree falls in the forest...........This clearly not a rights buy but more of a pay to be seen situation. Buzz16 is connected via this Neville guy to Sky and not a major player in the production business. So someone pays for production or let me be generous, Buzz16 commits to produce and provides feed to Sky for free.
If the above is the case, why would they ever leave BBC which has a HUGE reach on all platforms.
Also, why do this now during a pandemic with no audience (not that they ever had real audiences outside of Newcastle and Lester I guess). The basketball product is poor standard and that against the background of no fans in the stands........let’s just say it won’t do anything to attract people to the games whenever they resume for fans. I’ve watched a few of these live streaming games and they are just horrible.
Whatever money was put towards getting on Sky would have been better spent on a better product and marketing in the run up to whenever games will be played in front of crowds. Also, wasn’t the BBL just seeking a government bailout or they’d go under? Maybe they got 777 or some other unsophisticated investor to pony up cash. Maybe government has not come up with money so they were forced into this stupid idea by investors.
Who are BBL targeting? If it’s basketball fans, going on Sky during the NBA season will just magnify the product defiencies.
This is just another window dressing survival tactic coming from the BBL. For die hard BBL fans however, this is great news. For true lovers of basketball, with any real basketball IQ, not so much.
Why on earth would they ever leave BBC? And why go on live TV with no audience in the stands, and crappy product full of second rate Americans during a pandemic? It not like the market was craving to see basketball. The NBA even struggles to get viewers so being shown on same network during same season is just stupid decision making and this beggars belief. Sky doesn’t care because they have filled airtime
BBL, get your product and marketing right and people will come to the games. Once that happens, TV will become an effective tool to grow the league. Not before.
But good luck to them I guess?
After x years, BBC they still chose to use red button and sport website as place for most basketball they coverage. Did you see their schedules yesterday - on main channels they had live women games at rugby and football. They have made a conscious decision to promote the female side of what is seen as the main male sports of the country. Suffering is all minority sports - male and female parts of them - with BBC not promoting them on mainstream channels. So trying Sky in that context seems a risk worth taking.
You guess at audiences - always better to check facts. Glasgow had to add another bank of seats to the sports hall due to demand and get closer to 2K and still had games sell out. The occasional game moved into the large arena saw crowds in the 3 to 4k range and heavily promoted games had 5000 (yes big price discounts and freebies involved, but that's marketing to then ensure the small hall games are sold out). They need a Newcastle size court as the curent sports hall is too small for them and the arena is to cavernous and big.
Poor standard. Well I dont think anyone is claiming it is world beating, but even the 'top' standard has issues. I have been fortunate to be present at many NBA games - and it always surprised me how many folk could not be bothered to arrive to see the tip off and how many left with 5min to go. At least at the standard we have people are interested in the whole game. When on my business trips to USA I started attending college games more than the NBA team - the standard dropped, but folk were there for the start and stayed to the end predicting who would win was harder as more competitive. Plus some of the games were awful, but still got on tv. The standard is what is currently is - and plenty are working to raise the game.
Why go live when no fans in stand - have you seen UK live sport on Sky or BBC right now - all other sports are happy for their product to be shown without fans cause it keeps them in peoples minds. Last season I only watched Premiership games involving the team I support - at moment I watch other games as well cause I cant get out to live sport (as a coach or a spectator). That why BBL needs to go live now and not wait till fans are in the stand.
