21. Nobody got the (I believe) only NBA player to play for the Thames Valley Tigers yet? He may be the only one to have made his debut in the British top division before his NBA debut; but I'm not particularly sure if he did it in that order to be fair; it wouldn't have been a full season.

A few that haven't been (correctly) answered
11. What year was the BBL cup invented? 2003/4 season.
12. Name all the different names of the London Lions. Hemel Hempstead Lakers, Hemel Hempstead Royals, Hemel & Watford Royals, Watford Royals, Milton Keynes Lions and (obviously) London Lions. Ovaltine were one of their sponsors, I think they were Ovaltine Hemel Hempstead Royals. Vince made spurious claims to the Embassy/London Latvian side of the 60s/70s but it's hard to see a real link.
13. London Lions have been mentioned but can you name all other cats that have been teams in the BBL? Leopards, Tigers (x2), Wildcats, Panthers. I think the Pumas refereed to by Solly were Guildford/Sutton who never made it above D1, and Lynx is his aftershave when he's on the pull
17. In their pervious guise what were the Cheshire Phoenix called and what colours did they play in? Chester Jets, then Cheshire Jets. Hard to remember their colours as they'd turn up with so few players.
22. In the season 2000/01 the National Cup was sponsored by what company? NTL
It's too early for any more

I believe they were actually the Ovaltine Hemel Hempstead Rebels, although they may have dropped the "Rebels" during the Ovaltine era. At the same time the Watford Royals existed. I suspect the Royals came about from that merger. Some fun memories of that team. That stunning outside shooter Sam Smith. The Mid American Conference Player of the Year Harvey Knuckles. In my opinion currently the twelfth best of the 32 conferences in the NCAA; don't know how it rated forty years ago though. Future Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey. Giant Mike Spaid. The delightful and popular Cedric Frederick. High scoring youngster Drew Sewell. A season of a Lloyd brother (David) sandwiching Sunderland before and Warrington after.

Rebels appear to have played in the second tier in 1982/3 & 1983/4 with Hemel in the top flight (source: SM11 & wiki). I think I read somewhere there was fallout that lasted a couple of years (hence "Rebels") before they all patched things up and appear to have been called Poundstretcher Hemel (& - depending where you look)Watford Royals. They kept that name the following season (1985/6) and were Alphaprint Hemel Hempstead Watford Royals for the final season before the BBL started. They were (apparently) Hemel & Watford Royals for their BBL debut, and dropped the "& Watford" before reviving it for a year in the mid-90s.
I assume KO knew all of this before setting the question
Cedi Frederick was an agent (I think) when we restarted in 2004, his son Tom was pretty decent. Mike Spaid had a username on here paying homage to him, I think,

The only season I know that "Rebels" was linked to Ovaltine Hemel Hempstead was 82-83. They were being advertised as the Rebels, but whether that was being done correctly I don't know. Ovaltine were still sponsoring in 83-84, but no sign of the "Rebels" in the name then. Do you know where the second tier Rebels of the early eighties played, were they also Hemel? I think the Watford Rebels started in the late eighties. I believe Cedric played for Milton Keynes prior to Hemel. Possibly the top league Embassy All-Stars version, so Vince could use that as his tenuous link!

That's a bit weird, because that was the first season of the Watford Rebels who appeared to be a breakaway from Hemel and lasted two years before linking back up with Hemel. I'll ask a couple of people I know from the area. I imagine Watford Rebels played at Watford Leisure Centre where Hemel & Watford played for the year between leaving Hemel and moving to MK. The Watford Rebels name reappeared in the national league third tier in 89/90 (neither me or SM have tracked down the league table but they finished 4th) before moving to Wodson Park and became the first version of Ware Rebels. In a desperate attempt to bring this back on topic, Tom Hancock also coached at MK and once walked in to Wodson for a pre-season game and announced one of the baskets was too low. It wasn't

As far as I understand Watford Royals date way back, and they didnt use the name Rebels yet. They were included and won the first ever attempt at the National League in 1960/61.
Hemel Hempstead exact origins im not sure but I gather at this point was seperate to Watford Royals and entered the modern NBL in 1977.
Reading the Pawprints I acquired recently, it says that the Watford Royals attempted to enter the league in 1981/82 but Hemel Hempstead blocked their entry. Watford Royals finally managed to enter the following season in 82/83. Then in 84/85 Watford Royals took over the Hemel Hempstead franchise and the name changes to Hemel and Watford Royals (My blog has them down simply as Hemel Royals at this point as they seem to take off and re add the 'and Watford' part over and over again).
I think the Watford Rebels of 89/90 onwards are some kind of Phoenix offshoot of the Hemel Royals a few seasons on from the merger of 84.
Like All String says name history is a minefield at that time in British Basketball history. I tried not to get too involved and just referred to the Hemel franchise between 77 and 84 simply as Hemel Hempstead although I can see names such as Lakers and apparently Rebels may have been used. I try making more of an effort with the names from 96/97 as i then have websites to go by and have personal memories from 98/99 onwards which is where my British Basketball fandom starts.
The names of clubs would change mid season some times and different publications seem to sometimes honour and sometimes ignore the change, making it near impossible to completely follow for someone like me who has no first hand account of it all. The worst one of all was in Womens Div 1 85/86 when Bath (I think) must have moved to Swindon at some point that season. The newspapers one week had them as Bath, the next week as Swindon, the mags kept changing as well. I know that Bath and Swindon are not miles apart but they are very much two different places so I dont know what was going on there. I settled on calling them Swindon in the end.
