I would imagine this one should engender a lot of traffic as a title winner switches to a play-off winner. Given the insight that he has from within the Leicester camp this is a great signing for The Eagles in more ways than just on the court. Sharp, intelligent man as well. newcastle-eagles.com/news/johnson-jumps-to-tyneside/

That’s IRF’s usual criticism ! Intriguing recruitment though, which will spice up the Riders rivalry even more. Hopefully he’ll break his apparent habit of fading as the season progresses. Does this mean no return of Maxwell ?

Genuinely didn't see that coming! Definitely adds a bit more spice to Riders v Eagles games this coming season.

Does this mean no return of Maxwell ? Mmmmmm Maxwell already signed for a team in Ukraine which was announced last week, plus they are totally different players. Maxwell was an import and if am correct as Johnson is Canadian he won’t hold an import slot. Welcome to the Eagles Corey.

Definitely lazy recruitment!
But a great signing for Eagles
He's a leader on the court and full of energy
I'm surprised it's not mentioned in the signing article that despite being Canadian he has a British passport
I've been saying for years that Eagles need deeper squads with more energy and better Brits" to compete for the league title again
And this signing ticks all the boxes in that respect
In another thread I said I'm sure he must have bigger and better opportunities lined up
Obviously I have to take that back now
Maybe he didn't study hard enough at Harvard after all?
Hes crossed over to the dark side!
Thought he might head to London Lions and start dipping his toe in the City Jobs like Tyler
Ps is it finally time for Lasker and Defoe to retire now?

Was not expecting that. He would be a good signing for any BBL team but he seems a pefect fit for the Eagles given how they try to play.

If he can return to his best form that'll be great for Eagles. We shall see.

Teams don’t have limitless budgets.
So when Leicester resign Crandall after an MVP season they are paying him a lot more money. Players talk to each other, they know what their value is after proving themselves in the league. Lee will also be on a raise. Leicester have always signed relatively cheap Americans and spent on the uk players but eventually (and I think rightly) this has to change.
Johnson is likely the pinch point. They can’t pay everyone more money and have prioritised the Americans.
For Newcastle their needs are slightly different and they have always spent a bit more on retaining Americans. They can replace Gordon and Maxwell at cost and can focus on the wing and the uk spots which was their weakness last year.

I'd be amazed if Louis Sayers wasn't included in your squad next year. Seems to fit all your criteria for this coming season. Different posts from clubs this year, announcing who wouldn't be coming back before announcing who's arriving. Riders, Eagles and now Nix informing fans that Jalan Hayes is off to pastures anew.

Pleased with this one, as much for his defence as the obvious offensive threat. Suspect that DaveF’s analysis spot on, but nevertheless a good signing for Newcastle.

Ps is it finally time for Lasker and Defoe to retire now? As far as Defoe is concerned, I would say definitely not. He was a big part of our success last year. If he's coming in for around 15-20 minutes a game we are a good team. He was playing a lot more than that by the end of season and kept Maxwell out the staring lineup. Lasker dropped off quite a bit last year (in playing time and contribution) but still offered some big minutes in the odd game here or there where an experienced head was required. I'd be less surprised if he did decide to retire but wouldn't be disappointed if he was around again for another year. In both cases they seem to be great personalities to have in and around the locker room to help instill a winning culture. Particularly when you can sometimes have 5-6 new faces coming in each season. That sort of stability helps in my opinion.

But how much can you afford to pay for stability?

If we had to lose one of last season's core to Eagles, this is the one I would have chosen. Sorry to see him go, but his form dipped last season and he simply stopped taking shots they way he used to. If he can pick up again, he's a great signing for Eagles.

Suspect that Leicester felt the same way and concentrated their financial resources on keeping others happy - it happens.
Time will tell, but players have been known to have a resurgence after changing teams - think Andy Thomson when he moved to Riders.
Will be interesting to see how Johnson suits Newcastle’s quicker and less structured game. One of Newcastle’s weaknesses last year was from behind the 3-point line and he definitely adds firepower there.

He seemed at his best when allowed more freedom.
