I'm not sure how many fans of the 3x3 format there are on here, but it seems that both formats of the game will be represented at the 2020 Olympics: www.mvp247.com/2017/06/hoops-added-olympics/I'm glad the full 5-on-5 game isn't being reduced to make way for this, but otherwise fairly nonplussed about the new competition. If it helps reach new audiences, great, but the full game will always be the main event for me. With 32 players per tournament, I assume it's 8 teams of 4 taking part, so I'm not sure we're any more likely to qualify for this than the full game? Any other thoughts? Rumours that an 'All-Star Format' tournament is being considered for 2024 remain unconfirmed... 😉

It would be impossible for me to be less enthused. It'd be better to extend the main tournament to 16 teams. That would make the group stage better - less dead games - and there would be less good players/teams missing out.

I can't raise myself to a level of apathy about this sort of Basketball Heresy.. Expand the 5 man game ...

I think I remember similar stuff being said back in the day about a new format of cricket, not sure if 20-20 cricket ever got off the ground

I'm sure it did - your sarcasm isn't necessary - However lets get the standard Basketball game to a higher level in the UK - before putting extra money into a 3x3 setup.

The latter is a speeded up version of the game but still effectively the same sport, 3-on-3 simply isn't. A basketball equivalent to twenty-20 would be five minute periods, an 18-second shot-clock and maybe only four-a-side.

Interesting Idea So basically ... it's following the 20-20 cricket concept then? What could call it though ? ... speed-basketball ? If it was an Olympic sport ... I'd watch it

There's so little chance of it happening that I didn't give it a name. I do think it could be a decent tournament

I've always enjoyed playing 3on3 even when I was younger. Its fun and a useful option when you lack the numbers to play full court. It can also be useful for honing certain skills with less defenders around that you can then progress to the full game. Back int he 90s there seemed to be a lot of tournaments in the summer that I'm sure plenty on here recall and played in like me. Docklands, Battersea Park ring a bell but they seemed to die off.
I've tried watching the various versions that occasionally make TV and like most of you find it poor entertainment for whatever reason.
In terms of a "short" version of basketball I personally don't believe its needed in the FIBA game. If the NBA want to reduce the, frankly ridiculous, amount of time it takes to get a game done........change to FIBA rules!
