I'm hugely ignorant about both Freeland and the ins and outs of the NBA but my gut feeling is that inaminute is spot on.
The guy is 30, soon 31, and can't have more than 2/3 big seasons left at the top of his game - if I were him I would want to be playing and a leader on a team rather than bouncing around trying to get a spot on the bench in the NBA. I might be completely wrong but surely there are teams in Euroleague or one step down who would snap him up. Admittedly he might (might not) earn less but he'd be playing - and valued.
Or maybe he's just waiting for an offer from Leicester, or from Tony G.....except that I suspect that his (legitimate) monthly demands exceed what anyone in this country could rise to for the whole year.

The rules about D League eligibility are complicated. He may not be able to play in it. I presume he has a date in his head where his NBA only "rule" will be reconsidered.

You can't blame him for going to Russia bigger money and role! Maybe a g league shot to get into the league?? He took a shorter contract 2 years whereas the nba contract was for 3 years and was offered a starting spot. He spent majority of his Russian spell injured or barly playing. Did win the euroleague I suppose
