Something interesting I've stumbled across recently (in my non-basketball capacity) is the new legal requirement for a minimum salary for tier 2 workers coming to the UK (tier 2 workers include that of Sports-persons). Essentially, employers can sponsor skilled foreign workers (outside EU) to come to the UK to work for them under tier 2 of the immigration points system provided a minimum salary of £35,000 is paid.
This comes into force on 1 April 2016 - how many BBL teams will know about this? More importantly - how many BBL teams pay their foreign players more than £35,000.00 a year - even pro-rata? I can think of a few that do (I'm sure you can imagine who), but that certainly isn't the case for a lot of teams, especially down the bottom of the league, so it will be most interesting to see if this affects any teams heading into next season's recruitment.
Will we see a rise in EU players coming over? Or will there be ways and means around it (may be one for Dave F)? Either way - interesting developments....

quick maths so say bbl season is 8months then roughly 24k? surely there will be some way round it.

If it's as simply as £3k a month you're about to see a lot less Americans. Even if you charge the players for their accommodation / car etc it's still far more than most bbl yanks are on.

Certainly going to change the BBL. will it be a good or bad thing if there are less americans. Amerixan's with nationality will certainly be in big demand

"must be earning £35,000 or more to qualify for UK indefinite leave to remain (also known as permanent residence)" "The new pay threshold will be applicable to persons wishing to stay in the UK permanently (indefinite leave to remain) after five years of employment."
Almost all the Americans playing the BBL won't be looking to reside her permanently. Most I would imagine would be looking at 1/2 years max before moving onto something better elsewhere, or home to America.

Yeah, saw that shortly after posting the link (about the 5 years).
So wont affect many of our lads by the looks of things.

Basically irrelevant
Most Americans are here on tier 5 visas (temporary worker, creative and sporting)
That isn't changing

But things in regards to EU players might change after this summer.... as now EU players don't need VISA's to play here... There might not be that many EU players in the BBL... but if UK decide to leave the EU.. they would then be classified the same way as Americans/Australians/etc.

Would never have happened on the old site!?

Certainly not.......however expanding that theory, if Scotland had voted differently would Achara have been a Tier2/5 player.

Scotland planned to stay in the EU. if we do decline independence in the summer there's going to have to be a transition period before all those smelly foreigners are expelled

Keeping it purely practical, it's unlikely we would leave the European Economic Area as far as I understand, so the freedom of movement for pesky BBL shooting guards would be unchanged.

I'm sure if Scotland went independent the the Rocks would at the very least still be based in Glasgow but be registered in England and be known as the Glasgow Rocks of Berwick or something along these lines.

if Scotland and England went their separate ways, and one wasn't in the EU, I imagine you'd be looking at visas and passports to cross the border. I doubt the other BBL teams would be interested in doing that nonsense. But now the oil market is dead, that isn't going to happen
