I'm doing an Erasmus year in Stockholm from September so I'll be trying my best to get down and see a few games of a certain Sodertalje Kings who narrowly lost to the Eagles this September just gone! They've recently won Basketligan over there and are through to the Semis of their Playoffs (Or as what they call in Swedish, the "slutspelen") so are likely to be playing again in Europe next season, they did get through to the round of 32 in the FIBA Europe Cup and I imagine they'll be doing the same again next year so I'm certainly looking forward to that! I certainly hope that this FIBA Basketball Champions League does replace the Euroleague, the fact that a measly 31 teams are in the prelim stage in all of Europe is pretty pathetic compared to the rest of Europe and when you look at which countries these teams come from, it does by no means help in promoting basketball across Europe. Compare that to the UEFA Champions League that invites all UEFA members to take part in some way or another, even if the likes of the Gibraltarian representative does get annihilated in the Home and Away legs! The only time Euroleague has seriously made some sort of statement it's been interested in the UK was when it held the Final Fours here back in 2013 and that's it, they're only interested in making money and that's what a company-ran tournament does. I feel like FIBA has a plan that's developed off a proven model that works well for European Football and should be something that Europe could certainly do with. Also, just as a little sidenote, did anybody see the Antwerp Giants who played against the Eagles in their European Invitational tournament get interviewed by the BBC today in Brussels? I had a look and they had a game in the Europe Cup agains Varese which had to obviously get cancelled as Antwerp couldn't get to Italy in time. What's an Erasmus year?

I watched New York Knicks play LA Clippers at Madison Square Garden about five years ago near Xmas I wasn't a basketball fan then but just wanted to experience sport at Madison Square Garden It remains best matchday experience of any sport I have watched They know how to put on a show and I would go back and do it again given the chance Interesting. I've just got back from a trip to see my first games in the US. The game at Madison Square Garden was comfortably the worst presentation of the three games I watched. The presentation in Philadelphia was the best - everything you've come to expect of a US sports event, putting on a show at every opportunity. This, despite a half-empty crowd - perhaps they have to try harder than more attractive teams to keep attendees happy. Boston was the other game, which was better than the Knicks. I've seen the last three NBA games hosted at the o2 and found the presentation quite mixed at these as well. The Atlanta Hawks presentation was the best. Last year's was the worst... and now I remind myself, Knicks were the home team for that too! This year from Orlando Magic was good, although aided by the fact the matchup was an actual contest. I went to see Barcelona in a Euroleague game in November. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and standard. Went to a cpl of NBA games a few years ago over Xmas period, you would have to pay me to go again and watch it. Dull with 90% of the fans having no real interest in it. I found this to be the case at the Knicks and to an extent at the Celtics. Less so at the Sixers - you'd have to be somebody who really wants to go to see a team like them! However, isn't this the same at all major attractions (e.g. live music) now? It might not be 90% at Premier League football matches but it must be creeping higher all the time. I must have fallen lucky with my visit to MSG In terms of gamenight presentation: Superb intros of the team Tunnel cam The chearleaders Fan cam (the fans provide great entertainment) Celeb Cam (there were plenty in there) About 30 girls and guys who used guns to fire t-shirts into the crowd every break in play Great sound system Knicks got talent at half time - three nick's fans competing to get into a final. (a young lad who did Michael Jackson dancing. A young girl singer and a brilliant kid who played a piano which the brought out onto the court to play). Some kind of half court shot challenge A dance competition between different blocks of fans Tbh I can't see how they could have fitted anything else in. It was non stop entertainment Maybe they did it different than normal because it was close to Xmas It also helped the Knicks came back late on the game from being about 20 points down to win so the atmosphere was great If there is better than they do out there then I would like to see it (i've also been to NBA at O2 and the presentation was flat and boring in comparison to MSG)

Maybe spaghetti hoops was unlucky on their visit?

As I understand it an Erasmus Year is a sort of stuby exchange where students spend a year in a different EU country.

It's a "Study Abroad" year that is/isn't compulsory as part of your uni degree (For me it isn't as I do Accounting and Finance) where you live and study in a foreign country within Europe for a year or a semester (Sep-Jan or Feb-June), it's partly funded by the European Union who give you a non means tested grant to cover some of your costs and you pay the tuition fees of the uni you're going to, which for me is free!

ULEB Cup (now Eurocup) games in Den Bosch, Netherlands (including the home team upsetting Real Madrid in OT) ALBA Berlin vs Limoges in Euroleague last year, and vs Bayern Munich in the BBL Euroleague F4s in 2012 (Istanbul), 2013 (London) and 2015 (Madrid) Berlin this year too Copa del Rey 2012 (Barcelona) and 2014 (Malaga) Eurobasket 2011 in Lithuania as a fan
Not as many as spook and not as much as I'd like!
Copa del Rey is my favourite. The top 8 teams in the Spanish league at the halfway point, straight knockout over 4 days. All the fans stay for every game, the standard is super high and it really means something.

I must have fallen lucky with my visit to MSG In terms of gamenight presentation: Superb intros of the team Yes, same at every venue. Not sure what this is. The Knicks' own cheerleaders only performed once, at half time. Sixers Dancers performed 3 or 4 times and were around the crowd for much of the game. Yes, same at every venue. Yes, not many venues have the celebrities MSG gets so this was added value. Yes, same at every venue. At the o2 this year they fired pots of Muller yoghurt into the crowd (seriously). Yes, same at every venue. The screen display at MSG was particularly good. None of the fan stuff was very entertaining when I was at MSG. Two guys who couldn't make a shot and yet both won the prize! Boo! Maybe. But I think having seen other teams do even more - more acrobatics, more performances from the dancers, mascot fun - the bar is pretty high, and I expected the Knicks to put on more than they did. The opposite was true at the game I went to. The whole crowd were on the team's back, booing missed shots, chanting for some trial player to get on court, Carmelo arguing with a home fan - they were only about 12 points down and could conceivably have got back into the game. I'd like you to as well! I'd recommend Philadelphia. Which year(s)?

I went to the Knicks game last season at 02. Poor game and although they tried all the stuff that happens in US it just wasn't the same atmosphere for me.
I can imagine MSG would be poor if the fans were not happy with the team.
Two nights prior to the Basketball we watched at MSG we watched ice hockey there. That was a good game on paper New York Rangers v New York Islanders but it was all very flat and not as good as the atmosphere at Nottingham Panthers to be honest.
I will take your word on Philladelphia and if I'm ever there for any reason will make sure I go. I imagine it's a lot cheaper than Knicks.
Don't forget I'm comparing Knicks at MSG to other sports and other teams matchnight. And it's a level above anything I've seen. But it's the only NBA game I have seen in US so I can't compare it to any others.

I don't know if I'm alone or not in this but I love pure and simple basketball.
I mean in terms of family experience etc etc t-shirt guns and competitions and dancers and mark Cuban trying to get noticed every 5 minutes is all very good fun and American etc etc, but for me it's enough to just have the focus on the game. I see everything else as a distraction, and in some games it's almost as an apology for the game - and I can't get my head round it.
Maybe I'm a purist and it's probably not a view shared by too many, but for me I'd stop at team intros. Even music playing during the game gets on my nerves! The best games I've been to are the euro games where they don't allow music played when the games on. Bliss for me, I can get into the game a lot more.
I'll be honest, I'm a bit of a grumpy old man when it comes to all that other stuff on game day, I take pleasure simply out of watching the game.

I think I've even seen promos for $17 Sixers tickets. I think they were also advertising bring a friend for free and you both get a free cap and whatever... Yeah they really are dragging people there! But that's down to the team's performance and the slim likelihood of seeing a win. And I do get what you're saying if this was the only NBA you've seen live, it would still be better than any other events I've been to (Wembley stadium, England games, Premier League football, BBL playoffs etc.) The Knicks game at the o2 was pretty poor all round. I've hugely enjoyed the other two I've been to.

For sure, I've been a regular at football games at all levels home and away for 20 years, I completely get keeping the sport pure. Likewise at BBL, if I can have a beer and cheer the team with some fans around me, I'm happy. Music during the play is worst of all (I'm looking at you, Sheffield Sharks *click click*) However, if you are going to do the extra stuff, do it right - and the Americans know how to do it right. To be fair they don't really interrupt the action at all, the razzmatazz kicks in when there's a break in play. Although they might as well... a lot of the attendees are up and down from their seat during the game to buy food and drinks or on their phone; something else might hold their interest. As someone said earlier in the thread, Americans don't know how to go and watch sport. I was surprised how little noise the fans made themselves; I was expecting 'Let's go...' and 'De-fense' throughout the games but it rarely happened.

If it was pure basketball in BBL I think crowds would be half as big. You only have to look at how many families and kids are in there. Most of them are there for the whole package. If we could bring fancam and some of the other stuff from NBA into Riders new stadium next season I think we will see even more families come over time

Seems to have largely gone unnoticed among tonight's other excitements, but FIBA Europe have apparently now issued formal notices of suspension to any national federation which has a club in EuroLeague, including Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Russia, Spain, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lithuania, Italy, Greece, Israel, Poland and Turkey.

What an absolute mess. This throwing the toys out of the pram brings the sport into disrepute.
