I watched New York Knicks play LA Clippers at Madison Square Garden about five years ago near Xmas
I wasn't a basketball fan then but just wanted to experience sport at Madison Square Garden
It remains best matchday experience of any sport I have watched
They know how to put on a show and I would go back and do it again given the chance

I went to see Barcelona in a Euroleague game in November. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and standard. Went to a cpl of NBA games a few years ago over Xmas period, you would have to pay me to go again and watch it. Dull with 90% of the fans having no real interest in it.

There were large sections of the Barca crowd that begun singing and chanting around 30 mins before the game started, every minute of the game and around an hour after the game. The atmosphere is superb. Tickets begun at around 8 Euros up to 22 Euros. A few years ago we went to see some games in German Bundesliga 1 & 2. Again the standard of play and atmosphere was miles ahead of the games here.

Wouldn't fancy being the away team in some of the Greek venues
This clip is incredible
The reaction to the tip off after 1 minute 46 seconds kind of delays the game a bit!!
God knows how they don't set fire to each other either

In Europe I've been to watch Lyon's mens and women's teams. Good quality games and good crowd size and atmosphere at the men's game.
In America I saw Washington vs Brooklyn and Cleveland vs Chicago.

Speaking of European basketball..... That Tweet does make it sound more dramatic... but hey, it makes a popular Tweet ;-) Personally I am looking forward to the new FIBA Champions League.... it does make it a lot more like the one in soccer. With smaller teams starting in the qualifying stages.. So can't wait for next season and the seeing the first games in the new league!! As for seeing basketball in Europe.... Seen domestic/EuroCup/EuroLeague/FIBA EuropeCup games in : Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Turkey, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Austria, Lithuania, Latvia, Portugal, Albania, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro....... The standard of game/crowd/arenas/etc really do vary a lot... I've been to EuroLeague games where it's been dead quiet...(well, relatively speaking). And been to a small league game in a country where you wouldn't expect basketball to be a major sport.. but the fans are going nuts. Some of the most memorable games ... or crowds I've seen. One was in Pinar Karsiyaka in Turkey... when they played in the EuroChallenge against a Finnish team... Absolutely MAD!!! Another one in World Cup .. with Greece vs Turkey (in Ankara, Turkey). Finland vs USA (in Bilbao - with 10.000 Finnish fans making noise all game long.. despite being 20-30 points down), Romanian Cup Final 4 in Ploiesti. Also the Belgrade derby this year... quite mental! (although - of course I do need to add that I've 'seen' these games through the lens of a camera while sitting on the sidelines.... but I do feel you get a nice sense of the atmosphere while down on court level)

So why are FIBA and euroleague at odds for isn't euroleague and euro basket the same thing , I'm confused?? it all seems a little bit childish EuroLeague is different entity.. they run the EuroCup and EuroLeague. Big money teams get A or B licence to play in these... by fulfilling EuroLeague requirements/etc. FIBA Basketball Champions League is a new competition for next season launched by FIBA. It will have more soccer Champions League style qualifying... with smaller nations joining in the Qualifying stage. So gives more chance to smaller clubs to play on a bigger stage. FIBA also gives a minimum of ยข100,000 assistance to clubs participating in this competition (towards costs or TV, etc). I personally really look forward to seeing this new league .. and hopefully it will help smaller nations to enter the bigger stage of the game. (not saying BBL teams are quite ready for this YET!!) But if there is that kind of Financial assistance from qualifying stages.... who knows??? EuroLeague and FIBA have been at odds for a while over this... (also, EuroLeague doesn't like the new FIBA EuroBasket/World Cup qualifying format which comes to effect soon, so that the National teams have to play during the league season in qualifiers. Like they do in soccer.)

I haven't yet been to a game in europe. Would love to go to a game of the team I follow abroad, Being Zalgiris Kaunas. It's on my bucket list. So my only contribution to this thread is to say that a Swiss friend has got me into following his (and mine now!)Ice Hockey team. They are Olten in NLB Swiss league. The madness and enthusiasm of the fans is incredible and i do my best to help when there. This is a town of 17,500 people that gets average 4,000 home attendances and 5,500 for playoffs. My respect for the way Europeans follow their sport goes without saying now. I know many Basketball teams have equally mad support and I agree that in USA fans don't know what support is! The European game is much more interesting to me because of that enthusiasm

Just to add that Olten has equally mad Ultras as the top Basketball teams.Maybe just a fewer in number. Anyone who gets the chance to experience this should do it.You'll never forget it

God knows how they don't set fire to each other either If you've ever had the pleasure of reading Meech's autobiography (and it is a good read by the way), you'll know just how crazy Greek fans really are. I wont ruin the surprise, but its something about a pet tortoise.

I'm doing an Erasmus year in Stockholm from September so I'll be trying my best to get down and see a few games of a certain Sodertalje Kings who narrowly lost to the Eagles this September just gone! They've recently won Basketligan over there and are through to the Semis of their Playoffs (Or as what they call in Swedish, the "slutspelen") so are likely to be playing again in Europe next season, they did get through to the round of 32 in the FIBA Europe Cup and I imagine they'll be doing the same again next year so I'm certainly looking forward to that!
I certainly hope that this FIBA Basketball Champions League does replace the Euroleague, the fact that a measly 31 teams are in the prelim stage in all of Europe is pretty pathetic compared to the rest of Europe and when you look at which countries these teams come from, it does by no means help in promoting basketball across Europe. Compare that to the UEFA Champions League that invites all UEFA members to take part in some way or another, even if the likes of the Gibraltarian representative does get annihilated in the Home and Away legs! The only time Euroleague has seriously made some sort of statement it's been interested in the UK was when it held the Final Fours here back in 2013 and that's it, they're only interested in making money and that's what a company-ran tournament does. I feel like FIBA has a plan that's developed off a proven model that works well for European Football and should be something that Europe could certainly do with.
Also, just as a little sidenote, did anybody see the Antwerp Giants who played against the Eagles in their European Invitational tournament get interviewed by the BBC today in Brussels? I had a look and they had a game in the Europe Cup agains Varese which had to obviously get cancelled as Antwerp couldn't get to Italy in time.

I've just got back from a trip to see my first games in the US. The game at Madison Square Garden was comfortably the worst presentation of the three games I watched. The presentation in Philadelphia was the best - everything you've come to expect of a US sports event, putting on a show at every opportunity. This, despite a half-empty crowd - perhaps they have to try harder than more attractive teams to keep attendees happy. Boston was the other game, which was better than the Knicks. I've seen the last three NBA games hosted at the o2 and found the presentation quite mixed at these as well. The Atlanta Hawks presentation was the best. Last year's was the worst... and now I remind myself, Knicks were the home team for that too! This year from Orlando Magic was good, although aided by the fact the matchup was an actual contest. I went to see Barcelona in a Euroleague game in November. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and standard. Went to a cpl of NBA games a few years ago over Xmas period, you would have to pay me to go again and watch it. Dull with 90% of the fans having no real interest in it. I found this to be the case at the Knicks and to an extent at the Celtics. Less so at the Sixers - you'd have to be somebody who really wants to go to see a team like them! However, isn't this the same at all major attractions (e.g. live music) now? It might not be 90% at Premier League football matches but it must be creeping higher all the time.
