We’ve had a discussion on this forum about Nick Nurse’s achievement- becoming the first head coach to make it from the BBL to the NBA.
In addition to Nurse, ex-Plymouth Raider Cody Toppert has silently gone about his business as head coach of Northern Arizona Suns (G League affliliate to the Phoenix Suns) with success- his team led the G League with 15 3 pointers made per game (a speciality of his as a player). The team also ranked 3rd in Offensive rating and had a franchise record amount of call ups to the NBA under his tenure (5).
He’s just been called up to the Phoenix Suns as an assistant coach- and he’s achieved all of this at the tender age of 35. Could he follow in Nick Nurse’s footsteps and become a head coach in a few years? Regardless of how he does it’s a great achievement and it goes to show that the BBL does recruit players/ staff with decent basketball IQ (at least sometimes!). Well done Cody!
