I’ve played the game a little bit, I know how to research teams and how to take relevant information from stat sheets.... You’ve not seen any other team and know nothing about them. What you’ve said is far more bold than anything I have. I know but watch the game and then tell me we can't go and get results v the Hungarians. Honestly we can do this. Let me do some research on the Hungarians and I’ll let you know. Its not as as bad as you think believe it or not, albeit not quite Serie A.

Defensively Riders played exceptionally well tonight other than protecting their own boards, Sassari got way too many offensive rebounds, but maybe that's just class. They also gave us a master-class in blocking of shots, and tipping the ball away when it's above the ring, hopefully we can learn these skills.
Burnett and Holder were immense offensively, and Douse improves all the time.
Unfortunately TrayVonn Wright is not delivering the goods currently this season, maybe he is carrying a slight injury?
I think it may be a little harsh to judge Laarson on tonights performance, let's at least give him time to show what he can do against lesser teams.
We are still missing Pierre Hampton although it is probably not too long before he will be back, maybe next week against the first Hungarian team. I'd never seen tipping the ball away from above the rim before tonight! They did it at least 5 times. I didn't even know it was allowed? Lol. It reminds me of goaltending?

Sorry, and one more thing on Rob - deserves massive credit for getting this group, minus arguably its most multi faceted player, to compete with a side on probably three times his budget. Not sure there’s too many out there domestically who could galvanise a side like he does. And that includes Kapoulas. I reckon it's way more than 3 times our budget tbh I will say one thing that helped us compared to Bakken was the Italians didn't do a high press on us. They defended their hoop incredibly well though

Never used to be mate, only a rule that’s come in in the last 5 or so seasons.
Ps. Get as excited as you want the more excitable the better (keeps me coming back here!) but there’s a difference between that and saying you will finish as runners up in the group.

I think Bigz is right about Larsson struggling against very good, experienced bigs. He has to show a significant improvement against BBL teams to justify Rob's faith in him. Wasn't at the races tonight. Gutsy performance by the team without Hampton. When's he returning? We need him.

The NBA doesn't have the adversity that creates the bonds the BBL has. Does LeBron James travel to away games in a glorified transit van from Plymouth to glasgow or an equivalent distance? Does he get to stop at a supermarket on the way home from road games and just happen to bump into the other team in the booze aisle? Didn't think so. BBL 1-0 NBA.

Loved the game tonight. If you'd offered me a 12 point loss before the game I'd have snapped your hand off. 12 points flattered them. They were always likely to have a bit much for us down the stretch but we deserved to be closer than we were. To be only 4 points down in the fourth was a great achievement. When we needed a couple of shots to drop and a couple of 50/50 calls to go our way they went against us. The game deserved a more tense finish. The only negative was the crowd. Probably our lowest for a competitive game since we moved to the arena!
Moving forward certainly plenty of reason for optimism. Id have taken 1-5 and a couple of competitive games when we announced we were going in to Europe. Tonight shows we have a chance of getting out of the group. Will still be a tough ask. We may not even win a game. But if we play like that you never know. Going 3-3 is not out of the question. Need to win one of the games in Hungary! Can be proud of what we've done so far though, saw that Bakken won by 36 tonight. And Sassari demolished Benfica in the qualifying. And whilst we have been beaten in all 3 weve done ok.
Think the criticism of Larsson is a bit unfair. Can't fault his effort tonight, really hustled, grabbed some strong rebounds and will be a handful in the BBL. He was just way overmatched tonight. Cooley was just a bit too big too strong and too good. I know he's been brought in specifically for Europe but he wasn't going to stop Cooley. He stood his ground and fought though. Agree that we will need more from our big guys if we are to win games in Europe but guys that good and that big are out of our price range at the minute. Be interested to see if we go for a Gettys style big if we are in Europe next season. Not saying he's on Cooley's level at all but at least he's that size.
Think the point about us being limited offensively is a very fair one. We need 40+ from JR and Burnett to stand a chance on any night in Europe. Whether that changes when we get Pierre back we shall see. The role players did their bit too tonight, specifically Rema. We need that every night too if we want to get that second spot.
Can't wait for the regular season to start now!

The season has started (maybe wrongly I’d class this as part of the regular season).... Tonight wasn’t a friendly it was arguably the second biggest game of riders existence, I’m going to try and travel down to the next home game as the attendance wasn’t good and the efforts of that organisation deserves British Basketball fans support.

Unfortunately a huge chunk of the rebounding problem sits with Larsson for me. Riders aren’t a big team, they need the one genuine big they have to really put a graft in and from what I see this season, I’m not convinced he’s there. Leading per-minute rebounder tonight? The rebounding issue stems from Riders switching on defence; they can’t expect a guard to box out a big. Sassari also ran a nice play where they would post up a guard and then have a big screen them. Riders switch, the big is left in the post with a guard defending him. Plenty of points from this play in the 4th quarter

Kiefer Douse deserves a special mention for his performance tonight. The statline shows he contributed a lot. I want Larsson to be a success but I'm afraid he has much more to do before he'll win over the fans.

I want Larsson to be a success but I'm afraid he has much more to do before he'll win over the fans. Re laarson Bear in mind Cooley is ex NBA and still young do we honestly expect to have the answers in our squad. I've never seen such a physical display as what he showed on a basketball court in UK. They then had Polonara (a 180k euro a year salary player) according to Google. Think he blocked 3 shots in first quarter alone!! And they had other forwards bigger than him. Their backup centre was huge and probably earns a fortune compared to BBL players and would be way out of our reach what we can afford to pay anyone And I wonder if any of those 3 would like to swap being paid a big wage to come and do a Masters degree with us instead? What can we seriously expect? I say it again Laarson will do fine in BBL. He will find it a breeze in comparison to this. In fact every time he faces a Euro team it will just make him stronger for BBL. Although Cooley was a beast he didn't have as good a night as he would have hoped or expected. He didn't get it all his own way. 2 weeks ago I was worried about facing Royals and coping with MBA. Let's be honest that's going to be so much easier a challenge than last night. And we could have won last night. These Euro games are going to get us so sharp for BBL and seriously challenge and improve every player in our squad. It's exciting to watch it all pan out. I'm starting to think Europe will make us more likely to win the league than less likely as the team spirit, quality, sharpness and work ethic it's creating is a real plus. We have to be playing out of our skin just to compete. Our players won't like losing games. They will want to take it out on BBL opposition. They won't fear anyone and no BBL team can do what these Euro teams are doing to them IMO back to Laarson let's not forget Thompson got fouled out trying to handle Cooley. Is he not good enough either MRF?

Rob sums it all up great. Big improvement from the team since we played Bakken already and we will just get better and better the more of these games we play
Looking forward to the run of games and taking same passion and work ethic into the BBL
Plus he points out we only had 8 turnovers all game!
Bring it on!!

The game between the 2 Hungarian teams finished 79-76
So there's very little between them. We play away at the team that got beat next Wednesday. We really need to win that. I think we've got a great chance to do so.
Will also be interesting to see how the other Hungarian team do against Sassari on same night.
For sure this time next week we will know whether second place is a pipe dream or not

Two more things I will say.
1) Holder and Burnett showing they are MORE than capable of playing at this level. Will the Hungarians have 2 players with their quality and flair? I guess we find out next week.
2) We certainly aren't getting embarrassed playing in Europe as some feared we might. Far from it! Teams playing us are facing a real battle and dogfight.

The team we play next week went 3 and 3 in this tournament last year.
They have 2 US import players on their roster. A centre and a shooting guard. One of them went straight from college to Bulgarian League. Not much on the Internet about them other than that. I'm sure Steve can analyse their college stats etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Sassari are a big, talented and well-drilled team with a pretty deep bench. I can see how they walloped Benfica. That Riders were within four points of them in Q4 is credit to a battling effort. I guess it has all been said in this thread but this gives me great confidence for the BBL. Larsson does need to step up; we are certainly not seeing the best of Wright; and we are sure missing Hampton. That aside, everyone else is doing their stuff. Bring on the Royals.

Well played Leicester. It was a great game to watch! If I wasn't heading to the states next week I would 100% have come down to watch one of your next games. All the best and I have everything crossed for you to secure 2nd in the group!

Unfortunately the biggest disappointment of the night was lack of crowd and atmosphere. Riders held their own admiralby for 3 quarters. I imagine the club would've been very disappointed in thuis, too. What can be done?

I imagine the club would've been very disappointed in thuis, too. What can be done? No easy answers here. Our crowd is very much family driven. All the core basketball fans were there last night and loving the game. Midweek games don't suit families. Plus the schools won't take kids midweek I doubt? The other half of our fan base go for entertainment etc. They don't care about the opposition. Let's be honest (and weve spoke about it before) knowing we are playing dynamo sassari or USA Select the family fanbase would probably be more excited playing USA select. We play royals Saturday night - both sets of fanbase will be there for that. Core and families. Anyone got any answers on how to create core basketball fans overnight? I do think the core fans that go will encourage friends to go as these games are way more exciting than many of our blowouts of recent years. Plus for families one game of Basketball every couple of weeks is more than enough I believe. They have lots of other stuff they do with their kids. They could start to bore their kids if they take them to too many games etc.

If there's not a sizeable pure basketball centred-fanbase by now, there isn't likely to be a bigger one any time soon - despite the fact that the club is run excellently. Its a problem with the mentality of the general public, not the club.
