Lost 80-65
Disappointing. My optimism after the Sassari game is now gone as these are the normally weaker Hungarian team we will face
Positives for Riders:
Douse shot 20 points at 55% (he's starting to look a decent scoring threat now) Burnett 17 points at 55% (they restricted his opportunities) Hampton played 25 minutes and although not at his best looks like his ankle is now ok Thomson looked ok
Negatives Holder had a nightmare and shot 2 from 12 for just 5 points. We know he's better than that so I think they've done their homework a but and defended him well Trayvonn still struggling and only played 9 mins laarson only used for 7 minutes Washington and Anderson poor Lascelles made very little impact on the game tonight
Winning 1 or 2 games in this now my best hope for us

Riders are in a difficult position. They've definitely found a winning formula im the BBL, but in the clips I've seen (admittedly limited) against Sassari and Vulcano, they've been dominated by teams playing through traditional 'slow' bigs. In the longer term can they meet the challenge of the BBL and Europe with one roster? Tonight Douse carried Riders on his back and I liked the way they fought to the end.

Stupid question ... what happens next in terms of group / standings ?
Do they have to beat the next by so many points or what ?

My bad rider fans.

Hate to say it but we don't look set up for European opposition. Injuries have affected our capabilities but we gathered most of the team together early enough to gel. What's more, most of the players know each other from last season anyway. Larsson may need to be swapped for someone else. I can't see him faring well in the BBL.

It's always been the big question mark for me with Rob Paternostro - does he know how to 1) recruit, 2) use and 3) play against proper traditional big men.
To be honest, the way the games going and the way the BBL is, he hasn't had a massive need up to now to recruit such a player. But you look at the way his teams are, I'd regard Taylor King as his best "big man" in recent times, and the guy is a 3/stretch 4.
I think its just a case of him learning the art of the big fella, Larsson may as well be cut (I'll say it every week) as he's clearly not trusted to do the job he was brought in to do nor is he lighting anything up in the BBL.

The little bit I've seen of Europe with our games suggests to me the opposition back up big men (not their starting big men) themselves are WAY better and stronger than anything we see in BBL
Now at least those backup big men know what is needed and are physical enough to play at this level in this role if we could sign one.
But with them being established players at established Euro teams (albeit starting from the bench) I'm kind of assuming their wages would be well over our budget
As a club we aren't big spenders on individual players even in BBL terms let alone European terms. We do have to work to a budget. We do have to find rookie players and hope they will be gems.
I imagine it's way harder to find rookie big men who are experienced enough and battle hardened enough to come in and do the level of job we need. But for anyone established and proven the costs are just going to be way out of our league
Aren't they?

"The US centre looks very strong and promising to me."
10h August - INF on Larsson.
(To be fair, I thought Ahmad Thomas looked a world-beater too)

Of recent ones we've signed I thought Gruis did a decent job for us

Being honest isn't the fact he did so well over here an indication of how poor we are generally in this league for big men. At times he looked so slow, clumsy and cumbersome but was still able to deliver results. Wouldn't a decent big man at Europe level eat him for breakfast as well? Isnt it it all about levels and the better level ones are in short supply, in demand and expensive as a result? compared to guards etc

I always felt that if he got his head down, got a personal trainer and got fit he could be a great player. I guess some people don't want it that much. If I had his skill and height then id be doing everything I could to maximize my potential.

I enjoyed the game, and while I feel FV had another gear if needed it was a reasonable effort from Leicester. Good to see Hampton back, but he was a little rusty and lost the physical battles he usually wins in BBL. Holder was the biggest surprise for me, looked a little lost. Thomson had the guile in movement off the bench that was needed, they just never really got on (enough) good runs. I thought Jamel Anderson was extremely poor, simply being athletic can be a real prized asset in the BBL but more needed to play at this level. Gets lost defensively a lot, perimeter shooting was waay off

You have the budget to compete its just not been spent the wisest for European competition in my opinion. You've got an expensive bench that didn't need to be. Doesn't help when probably your highest earner isn't playing.

I do worry a lot about Trayvonn. The first season he was with us 2015-2016 he scored 20 points or more in nine of forty games, last season he never scored over 20 in 36 games, and this season he shown us very little of what we know he is capable of. This is simply not good enough for an American import IMO.
Larsson has still not shown very much, and again for an import is not good enough IMO.
Washington has shown almost no desire to drive to the basket, and consequently has become a very predictable outside shooter.
Similarly Anderson hardly ever shows us the sort of aggression that Kiefer Douse demonstrated so effectively on Wednesday night. He obviously enjoys playing, as he is always happy and smiling, but where is the desire to win.
Lascelles may have made little impact on Wednesday night, but, by and large, he performs the job that Rob requires him to do whenever he is on court.
