It's a Wednesday night. You finish work at 5. You have a 30 minute drive to the venue. You've been to several Riders game and other events in the last month. And Riders are playing an outfit called Falco-Vulcano Energia KC Szombathely in a game that you know to be a dead rubber. Easy decision not to bother.
Having said that, the stay aways missed Wayne Martin's home debut. He looks the real deal.

Oh God I am actually going to support IRF in his argument. The the last time we didn't play on a Friday night was last April in the rearranged game against Wolves. It was cancelled because of the bad weather and the only night available was a Tuesday. We played on one of the small cross courts with only one bank of seating put out and that was not full. I think there would have been around 400 - 500 in that night. Admittedly it was not a European game but I do remember debating whether I had time to get from work to the game in time for the tip off and whether the rush was worth it considering at that point the Eagles were not in the running to win the Championship. Don't worry padaceth you only have to agree with me once every 3 years!!

Plus you've had a tough day at work and you are starving and the roads are gridlocked etc etc etc The other week I was all set to go to a riders game and missed it because I fell asleep watching the news! When I woke up we had already tipped off. I actually enjoyed watching it at home on livebasketballtv instead

I do accept eagles have a bigger fanbase than us by the way. And many are more fanatical as well.
I'm just saying eagles will also find it equally hard getting bums on seats in any big number midweek if they hopefully do try the European adventure in due course
Other clubs find it hard enough getting bums on seats at weekends!!

At the last census in 2011 Newcastle had a population of approx 268K (grown to 290K in 2015 according to the ONS) whilst Leicesters stood at approx 443K so in reality you should get bigger crowds we also have a football team or two in the region plus currently a fairly successful Rugby team who are playing in Europe and regularly have games on a Friday night.

It doesn't stop Football and Rugby fans. It is just a totally different mind set. Chalk and cheese when it comes to passion, dedication, ETC. Imo, i must add.

But those sports are all over the evening news, the newspapers, the TV and the teams they play and the competitions they play in are world famous. When football teams play in Europe their opponents are world famous names and people want to go and watch. You don't have to Google them to find out what country they are from. If we ever got to play Barcelona or Real Madrid or even had we drawn Benfica in basketball(who we could have actually got etc) then it might actually mean more than Falco Vulcano Don't blame the lack of passion on the fans. It's just the fact basketball in GB is a tiny sport that only means something to 0.5 per cent of the population Rugby probably means something to 20 per cent of the population And football probably 70 per cent What is there to get excited about unless you actually somehow end up at one of the games randomly

And when did Newcastle last play a non Friday night game at home (apart from maybe a playoff 2nd leg?) I have no idea which games you are talking about IRF I'm saying if they played Wednesday nights as well as Friday nights they would struggle on Wednesday nights big time in comparison to Friday And this week at Riders shows the extent of that struggle for us Lions, Falco, Eagles It's going to be the middle game that misses out the most as we've just seen Eagles other night used to be Sundays when fixtures dictated, now nearly always Fridays

Is it down to the Community programme that the Eagles have successfully run for many years, the on court success or a general thirst for sport up here that means we can get people to come to games?

Is it down to the Community programme that the Eagles have successfully run for many years, the on court success or a general thirst for sport up here that means we can get people to come to games? Well firstly I've personally always considered Newcastle a really passionate place for sport Does your club not also go back 40 plus years (starting in Sunderland?). I wonder if any fans from those days still support you. If so you have the benefit of support from 2 cities. But I think the main reason has to be what you highlight on your twitter page. 24 trophies and counting. That's a lot of success to help develop a fanbase over the years. And nearly all of those trophies in the last 13 years Think we've won 9? Plus we are adding to our crowds. We were on 800 to 1200 at Lougbourough A couple of years later we are on 1600 to 2000 I would say And if we continue to do good things on court we will keep winning trophies and hopefully more people will find out about us and we will keep growing the fanbase

The overwhelming driver for Newcastle crowds is the incredible schools and community program they run.
The figures and satellite clubs are all highlighted on the eagles website
You build interest in participation in basketball. More people have interest. More people come.
Crowds do not follow success in basketball. They depend upon promotion and off court effort

(Although there was a rumour tickets may have to be free for that one. Would be interesting how much difference that makes if that is true. I would expect we would still only be half full max as will be so little time to promote it after the eagles home game on saturday) I started that rumour... I think it's a condition set by FIBA of being in the competition - you have to offer free entrance to at least 1 home game in the first group stage. My assumption is that this is to increase awareness and popularity of the Europe Cup. And it looks like it's very much needed in some instances. But I have no evidence of any of this, apart from the fact that the FIBA website still says next week's Leicester game is free entrance.

Robs got his first technical in Europe!! It was great that the commentators were right next to Rider's bench... you could clearly hear some of the stuff Rob was shouting at the refs. I'm sure at one point he yelled 'Is it because I'm English?!' Which he isn't? To be honest having heard what he was yelling I'm not surprised he got a tactical. One of my highlights for them many games I've been too over the years was him be ejected from the game (at the Copper Box) and being totally bemused why. He started out being very respectful to the refs in these Europe games, but he's gradually gone back to his BBL ways. Probably something to do with frustration at their lack of success. But I will say this, there were a couple of decisions in this game that were shocking, and the crowd (and Vince on commentary) clearly thought so too.
