In the next few years
The article seems to suggest it would mean the team only playing in Europe and not being part of the BBL due to the amount of games??
Would be 15 home games and 15 away games minimum. He says in the article more games makes it more viable for an English team to play in the league than in the past.
I can't post the link
It makes competing in Europe a different kettle of fish. Maybe this is what Russ had in mind when he said playing in Europe doesn't work alongside the BBL schedule

A team playing out of the Copper Box would work

I would 100% travel to London to watch an English team compete in Euroleague if that were what the team was built for.
It was great fun to watch Leicester play in the Europe Cup, but there was always the BBL which would be the main focus. Seeing an English team with the sole focus and draw for players of being in the Euroleague would bring talent that isn't possible right now with a BBL team.

Is it currently? Nope, they're weekday games. But I am more likely to book a day or 2 off work to see an English team take on teams I would recognise like Panathinaikos, Real Madrid or Maccabi Tel Aviv. The best way to do it actually would be to link with a football club like the majority of the current Euroleague teams.

But if you link with arsenal you've effectively ruled out fans of every other London club. Even I'd struggle to like them and I'm obsessive about basketball

I guess coming from outside of London I didn't see the difficulty with that. It would be a good way to draw a large number of people instantly, but as you said you would be putting off an even bigger group of potential supporters. As a basketball fan first and foremost I would just love to see high level basketball (No offence to BBL teams, I still love our domestic league but it doesn't quite compare at the moment) in the UK on a frequent basis.

English team, do they forget that there's a Scottish team in the league?
No BBL side would quit the league just to get pumped in Euroleague. It's a fantasy, GB Basketball is already embarrassing enough at international level without being embarrassed at European club level as well.

This article gets copied and pasted every few years. Lo and behold, it’s always 3-4 years away. It always will be...

I don't think we need to worry about the Rocks competing in the Euroleague any time soon. Or the playoffs for that matter....

I would much rather see BBL teams growing organically, increasing their fan bases, and ultimately being able to compete in the lower level European competitions with a genuine fan base rather than the "rent a crowd" you get for UK NBA games and would get for this sort of thing.
I don't really see the point of having a London Euroleague franchise with absolutely no connection to the game in the UK.
My view is the same of talk of a breakaway for Champions League - if, say, Man City or Man Utd were competing only in Europe that would lose a lot of the interest for me.
But what do I know?

Euroleague's ambition to have a London team competing was discussed last year, with the O2 and the Copper Box Arena suggested as home venues. ballineurope.com/london-euroleague-basketball-potential-expansion-team-6051/This is a really good article by the way. But seriously, British basketball can't put together a team that can get past the first round of the Europe Cup - the 4th tier of European basketball, let alone the Euroleague - the top tier. Having a standalone team, outside of the BBL, might help focus a bit... but I'd say we're at least 10+ years away from producing a team that can be competitive in the Euroleague.

The Copper Box only has a 6,000 capacity, for what it's worth.

Any serious investor would no doubt do some serious research on past success/failure of BBL clubs
...and probably see it as a non-viable venture with little or no return of money ... sad, but true

It does seem that Euroleague wants a London team rather than someone wanting to run a London Euroleague team.
I'm not sure how successful the bbl is/has been in London is relevant. Its success would depend on whether the pull of the opposition would be enough to make it viable, and whether they can find someone prepared to lose £10million in the first three years.

Absolute pipedream.
Why I hear you ask? Look at the attendances for the Euroleague final in London.
Even Euroleague weren't stupid enough to take up the option of hosting it at the 02 for a second year.
