Cardiff Met Archers 65-78 Essex Rebels (18-23, 33-44, 49-64)
Essex Rebels have secured their second win of the WBBL Championship campaign, and their first ever road win in their inaugural season, after beating Cardiff Met Archers 78-65 to move to a record of 2-11. The margin of 13 points also means Rebels take the head-to-head over Archers, which might prove crucial in the Play-off race as the defeat keeps Cardiff just outside in ninth place. Leading scorers – Laura Shanahan 15, Sarah Jorgensen 12, Tijana Dukic 9 (Archers); Cat Lutz 23, DeAngelique Waithe 20, Jessy Ward 18 (Rebels) Turning point – Rebels won each of the first three quarters, in particular using a 13-4 burst in the five minutes before half time to establish a double-digit lead at 44-33 with Cat Lutz and Jessy Ward hitting three-pointers in that spell. The lead peaked at 64-47 on another pair of Lutz triples in the third. Key stat – Rebels committed a huge 26 turnovers, but were clinical when they did get their shots off, making 52% inside and 34% from three-point range, while also getting to the free-throw line 27 times in the game. Game hero(es) – There were big double-doubles for Lutz and DeAngelique Waithe, with the former scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, as the latter scored 20 on 58% shooting to go with 14 rebounds and four assists.
BA London Lions 72-92 Leicester Riders (12-31, 29-51, 52-71)
Leicester Riders are back at the top of the WBBL Championship following their 72-92 away win over BA London Lions. Riders continue to battle it out with Sevenoaks for the top spot whilst London missed on the chance to edge just ahead of Caledonia Pride. Durham make major statement for remainder of season after returning TaylorFormer EuroCup Women performer Theairra Taylor is back at Durham after the north-east club swooped to secure her services as they look to spark their 2018-19 season into life. Previously suiting up before they made the transiton to the WBBL, the player, who has stepped put in prestigious FIBA competition for Basketball Nymburk, is excited to be back on board with the north-east club. She enthused: “Signing with Durham is exciting, since it’s a great programme with amazing staff from top to bottom. Lee Davie is one of a kind, an awesome coach and a great person. Honestly, it’s one of the main reasons why I returned. “I met my teammates for the first time today and they are very talented. I can tell this a great group both on and off the court. “Winning is always the expectation, but one game at a time,” continued the Iowa graduate who played in Romania last season with Cluj Napoca. “The goal is to grow and improve as the season progresses to give us a shot at a trophy.” Coach Davie added: “I’m really excited to welcome Theairra back to the programme. It’s really special to be able to add another high quality person to the really good group of people we have here. “I think she’s going to be a great addition to the team and the league overall. “She’s brings a wealth of experience with her from both the States and in Europe, which I think is going to be vital in this next stretch as we push to solidify a Play-Off position – as well as what we hope is going to be a successful WBBL Trophy run. “It gives us another proven dynamic playmaker capable of creating her own shot as well as for others,” stated the play-caller. “She’s another three point threat, which is going to give us that additional space inside for our bigs as we head into this next flurry of games. “I think it’s going to be crucial to our success to have a well balanced team at both ends the floor, giving us as much flexibility as possible as we look to succeed in this very competitive league,” concluded Davie. www.wbbl.org.uk/durham-make-major-statement-for-remainder-of-season-after-returning-taylor/

Sun 20th Jan 2019 - WBBL Game Reports
Oaklands Wolves 95-36 Cardiff Met Archers (31-7,55-14,79-21)
The history keeps flowing in the WBBL as Oaklands Wolves proudly recorded their biggest ever victory as a top flight club. They smashed past Archers in a real team effort as no fewer than six players amassed double-digit scoring returns. Leading scorers – Milligan 13, Freeman 13, Schluter 12 (Wolves); Dukic 10, Lewis 8, Jorgensen 6, Wagstaff 6 (Archers) Turning point – There wasn’t one. Oaklands came out all guns blazing and cut down Archers before they had any chance to get into their stride with that devastating opening period. Key stat – If you take 69 shots and miss 55 of them, you aren’t going to win many games – let alone be competitive. A day to forget for Archers. Game hero(es) – There were plenty of contenders with a trio standing out. Roya Rustamzada claimed 10 points, 10 boards and 6 assists, with Lauren Milligan also claiming a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile Tia Freeman continued her super form with 13 points, 6 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Durham Palatinates 52-60 Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters (11-13, 24-24, 40-44)
Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters almost had their title prospects dented by Durham Palatinates but managed to slip past the North-East side to take a precious road win. The result was in balance throughout, with Durham strengthening their roster on the eve of the contest. But, Hatters had the standout player in Sarah Toeaina. Leading scorers – Eduardo 14, Taylor 13, Bosilj 12 (Palatinates); Toeina 22, Naylor 12, Brodersen 9 (Hatters) Turning point – She had been the difference-maker all game and Toeaina made a huge score inside the last 30 seconds that effectively sealed the deal for her team. Key stat – Durham needed a few more triples to drop in a defensively orientated contest, with 3 of 16 not giving them the extra edge they needed. Game hero(es) – Toeaina showed her class with a powerful double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Sevenoaks Suns 78-58 Manchester Mystics (22-16,44-36,60-44)
With a week to go until the WBBL Cup Final, Sevenoaks Suns are yet to taste defeat in league action after taking down Mystics. Len Busch and his players are still flawless as they turned up the heat after half-time to take control. Leading scorers – Good 19, Monakana 15, Clark 14, Carr 14 (Suns); Roscoe 16, Ovner 13, Bailey 11 (Mystics) Turning point – Mystics fought hard in the second quarter and got their noses in front but Suns made a statement of intent for the second half with an 11-3 run heading to the locker room. Key stat – Suns were lighting it up from long-range with 9 of 16. Game hero(es) – There were an array of strong displays including Cat Carr with 14 points and 9 assists, Ta’Yani Clark with 14 points, 8 assists and 4 steals; as well as a team high 19 points from Jess Good.
Nottingham Wildcats 88-59 Caledonia Pride (14-10,38-25,
It’s a jump back into the top four for Nottingham Wildcats as they showed far too much for the visiting Pride. The combination of Chelsey Shumpert and Jasmine Joyner was too strong for the visitors as the duo turned on the style. Leading scorers – Shumpert 31, Joyner, 24, Prior 14 (Wildcats); Weledji 17, Robb 13, Kalda 8 (Pride) Turning point – Wildcats hit the offensive accelerator during the second period and once they had eased away, it never looked like Pride would recover. Key stat – Wildcats hammered Pride on the glass and out-rebounded them 54-33. Game hero(es) – Joyner showed out with a special double-double of 24 points and 19 rebounds as well as 6 blocks, while Shumpert netted a super 31 points and handed out 7 assists.

Tia Freeman (Oaklands Wolves)
It’s consecutive appearances for Freeman who was excellent again for Oaklands as they recorded their biggest ever win. The guard cut down Cardiff as her team moved into the Play-Off spots off the back of her 13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Chelsey Shumpert (Nottingham Wildcats)
As usual, it was the scoring prowess of Shumpert that rose to the fore as Wildcats moved back into the top four of the standings. Her superb 31 points and 7 assists was integral to Nottingham breezing past the visiting Caledonia Pride.
DeAngelique Waithe (Essex Rebels)
History happened for Rebels as they claimed their first ever road win as a WBBL franchise. They were too strong for Archers in South Wales as Waithe brought the noise with a towering effort that returned 20 points, 14 board, 4 assists and 2 blocks.
Sarah Toeaina (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters)
The week before the WBBL Cup Final, Toeaina reminded us why she is an MVP contender by helping Hatters to maintain their title challenge after squeezing past Durham. The Sheffield star came away with a powerful 22 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists.
Jasmine Joyner (Nottingham Wildcats)
Joyner torched Caledonia Pride in spectacular style as she recorded the best individual display of the 2018-19 campaign. She propelled Wildcats to victory with a jaw dropping double-double of 24 points and 19 boards – as well as 6 blocks and 3 steals.
Off the bench – Ta’Yani Clark (Sevenoaks Suns), Cat Lutz (Essex Rebels), Roya Rustamzada (Oaklands Wolves), Jess Good (Sevenoaks Suns), Jen Ashton (Leicester Riders), Lavinia Da Silva (London Lions), Cat Carr (Sevenoaks Suns).
