I am not wishing to be off – season upon us; goodness knows there is time enough for this sort of debate but I am genuinely curious, having seen most teams play this season at the Pavilions. Who does anybody think their “surprise package” has been this season? The player you were really not sure about but with whom you have been very pleasantly surprised? I will kick us off with the mighty Raiders and go out on a limb by saying Josh Wilcher ( Who, for me, has been the most consistent player all season. Not that I didn’t rate him last time around but he has been an absolute rock this year) and… Denzel. When he was the first signing last year, announced amidst a hail of flashlights and sounding trumpets, I really thought we had seen it all. The great thing about Denzel is the timing of his scoring; he seems to pop up with buckets just when we need them and has been driving to the basket with a real sense of purpose this year.
Answers on a postcard, please…

Ali Frasers really surprised me this season. Always liked him as a decent role player, pretty tough and gritty, but he’s really shown a good scoring touch this year and has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise uninspiring season in Glasgow.

Louis Sayers at Phoenix. Wrongly presumed he’d be making up the squad as a young’ish British player but I’ve been very impressed with him - great 3 point shot, can drive to the basket and has been involved a lot more than I thought - real key player this season. And I’d say he’s improving all the time!

Have to agree with twofawkes about Sayers. Suspect came to support Lativonic and Norl and hoping for more court time but a real relevation. Has always been known as a shooter but the way the squad has worked out has been getting far more time than the start of the season. He's now scoring from inside the arc, taking the ball in on the dribble and scoring in a number of different ways. Really impressed in maturity and nerve, sinking 3/3 free throws near the end against Royals last game. Also capable of " impossible" and fast "no look" shooting from a way out........just as long as he doesn't have time to think and aim properly!!!

Always thought he was massively underrated at Raiders; on his day Sayers was a game changer from beyond the arc, even then.

Wasn't a surprise but once he was allowed court time (not that long ago) Josh Ward-Hibbert has been excellent for Riders. Always felt he'd been underused.

We always knew JWH could play
He's quality. Got a great BBL career ahead of him. If he wants it!

I'd go a bit further
I think if all kept together raiders have a few
1. Okiki already has 2 huge games shutting down Ramon Fletcher and running an offence without Josh 2. Shelton is stick thin at the moment but with added muscle and experience could be a proper decent player in this league 3. Ubario I think needs reps now maybe have him start next year and see what he can do 4. Palmer looks to have a good 3 point shot on him maybe a little small to play 2 guard but if he can keep improving his three ball will stick on rosters at this level

Okiki for me, had him down as a practise player but hes been fantastic. His defence on justin won us the game against London.
Donte. I was a bit suspect of what hed be like 2md time round having only seen him be a 4th option on a mess of team without a coach I didn't know what hed be. Turned out to be an MVP calibre player

Bouna Ndiaye surprised me a little. Expected him to offer 15 minutes from the bench, not starters minutes and 13PPG. I suspect there may be an element of necessity to it all - the imports didn't seem capable.

Bouna definitely initislly sprung out ahesd of a weak team. Hasnt had to be the man for a few games now however i feel if he could shoot freethrows be would be much better than bbl.
