The salary cap change was reported on Hoopsfix early in the season - like you, I imagine few were banging their head on the ceiling before: www.hoopsfix.com/2018/10/bbl-salary-cap/Apparently ‘benefits in kind’ aren’t included in the cap either. So, those clubs who have deals with local car dealerships to provide vehicles are adding value for players without impacting the salary cap?

I never thought i'd see the day where we discussed a club getting near the salary cap...

Plymouth were close to it a few years ago.
Seeing as things like housing and cars aren't included, it's a rather flexible cap anyway. £2k p/month plus a car and flat in London is certainly worth more than £3k p/month if the players has to provide his own accommodation and transport. Especially if it's a multi-year deal and the flat is provided during the close-season. There's plenty of other way around it, as well. The boundaries were certainly pushed during the "arena days", Sheffield certainly didn't come into the league paying peanuts and Leopards, Towers & Birmingham were all chucking money around. It's still hard to believe that Fab was once signed as a spare American by Bullets.

Royals are trying to be the Man City of British Basketball.
Whether or not their spending is sustainable is another matter. Fair play to them after they were mocked earlier in the season

Fair play to them after they were mocked earlier in the season What value will it add though if after 3 years the club folds - I think people would be less sceptical if there appeared to be some sort of infrastructure in place to develop the club youth team upwards? It’s a difficult one as undoubtedly they have attracted some quality players and a vast improvement on Leeds just can’t help thinking they aren’t in it for the long haul.

They’ve made an impact in their first year. Better chance of attracting interest than struggling at the bottom of the league. Let’s see what rhey do moving forward

I think this is one of those things you could argue any way you liked and with some justification. I'd be interested to know others' thoughts on this. For me, I think any BBL franchise really needs to come in with about 3 years of funding off the bat until suchtimes as they build enough of a business/following to break even. That's what we may be seeing here?

What’s the latest on any new franchises? Or is it a closed shop now?

Tigers never did a sweep. A Steve Dagostino-led Sharks tore the backside out of them in the cup at the 02 prior to the NBA game. Think Sharks won by about 30.
They also didn't go 0-33 the next season. It was two seasons after.

I agree about Crystal Palace... I'm going there for the Royals/Lions game in a couple of weeks and it'll be the first time I've been back there for basketball in over 10 years. But I've been there more recently for other reasons and the place really hasn't changed since the Towers were there. I think the NSC were hoping for some significant funding so they could host some Olympic events in 2012, but instead the decision was to spend the money elsewhere. I think that was a major blow for the NSC... not only did it not get an injection of cash, it's now either further down the venue pecking order. But where else in London could Royals play? I can't think of any better venues to be honest... because lets be frank even Wembley Arena, which isn't what it once was, wouldn't be a viable option if you need to make a profit.

If we are dealing in facts the dagostino game was actually at Birmingham. Tigers beat Guildford at the O2 in the trophy final that year
I find there is an easy way to remember about modern sweeps (ie league title as opposed to conferences)

Clearly Is "sweeping all before them" a fact? Or a generalisation? I would say winning three trophies (including the league) and being runner-up qualifies as sweeping all before them. Though I'm still pissed off we failed to do the sweep in 2012 after losing in the Trophy semi-final. So I guess I'm precious too

Nah they were pretty dominant that season - but the sharks did absolutely hammer them in that final from memory.
