Having gone to the Lions game at Ponds Forge earlier this season, there's not a lot to choose between the two venues for spectators. PF is obviously more central, but EIS is close to the other arena parks and Meadowhall. Either way, it's good news if they now have reliable availability and can extend the basketball activities.
Interesting they're still pursuing building their own facility. I thought that was dead in the water?

Seems to me that we're putting off the new build/new venue for yet another year. Whilst at the same time I've never believed this to be ever dead in the water, it does delay things again. I suppose it depends on who you listen to, what you read and how much you read in between the lines. Or even if you look for each and every opportunity and set back to use as a stick to the beat the club with. I've fond memories of playing from Ponds Forge. Most likely because we had a good team back then and probably when we last won the league (sigh). This of course comes with memories of better atmospheres etc probably because we were winning things. Just one side of seating and a few seats behind one of the baskets. I wonder if they'll do that again? There was'nt any there in the Lions game this season. The organisation have put a positive spin on it as you would expect really. Fans are already asking about parking. There is parking at Ponds Forge but not as good as the EIS. The open air car park that used to be nearby is no longer and is now land attached to new(ish) hotels. For the Lions game I parked more in the city centre and had a 15/20 minute walk. Alright as an one off but don't fancy it on a regular basis. Awkward one for away fans I think. Parking at Meadowhall and catching a tram to Ponds Forge might be an alternative for some.

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p073rjg3Mike Tuck's interview about Ponds Forge. With this an email sent out to season ticket holders its very much looking like a Sunday afternoon tip (mostly) for the Sharks. City centre(ish) so amenities should be good and even a choice of hotels a basketball throw away if a night stay is desired.

I think it's better for Sharks at Ponds Forge. Much better being in the centre of Sheffield & for me it feels more of an 'event' at Ponds Forge, I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

I think Mike touches on this in his interview; the EIS is on the outskirts of Sheffield and when mention some Sheffielders are still unaware of it and don't know where it is. Ponds Forge is a lot more central and better known so when mentioning where Sharks play from they just may have a better idea. Parking aside, Can't not do any harm. However if it going to be £4 with a voucher for a coffee then I'll not moan too much. Also much easier to get to for our sheffield refs! They might be a little more lenient with us!!! ;-)

Apologies if it’s obvious but I’ve not really followed the history of this… Why did Sharks move from Ponds Forge to the EIS in 2006, and why are they moving back from the EIS to Pond Forge now?

I don't know why they moved originally but the EIS has become difficult to schedule regular fixtures in (the Sharks last played at home on Feb 1st and don't have another home game until March 29th). Also, the city council have decided to extend the sports hall facility for use by the nearby college so it would be disrupted even further. At Ponds Forge, the Sharks can have regular time slots and can also incorporate some of the development teams.

So the only part I’m still unclear on is why they moved out of Ponds Forge to the EIS in the first place…?

It is only a pure guess but at the time the EIS was a newer facility, has 2 sided spectator seating and probably wasn't as busy. It is now used by everything from boxing to snooker to wheelchair basketball to athletics and even election counts.

I think Billy sums it up fairly well.
The EIS has certainly become more well known and popular sporting wise, internationally and nationally. The much mentioned and discussed 'blue hall' has been refurbed and is the home for GB wheelchair basketball.
Lots of competitions are played from the EIS including vollyball, snooker and netball to name a few. All putting sharks down the pecking order.
It was certainly looked upon as a good move when we first made it with like Billy said, seating on both sides of the court. I am sure there were other reasons but it a while ago. Wanting or needing to play on a Friday evening might have been another reason. I can remember chatting to management that room hire was both additional to the court and expensive. We had rooms for parties/celebrations or similar. We currently use the cafe at the EIS after games to sit and have a drink with the players. We get the coaches and MVPs view of the game too.
The scheduling and planned extension work on the EIS have to be the 2 main reasons why we are moving back to Ponds Forge. Another reason given is the opportunity to play on a Sunday afternoon which is better for families rather than a Friday night.
