There's nothing wrong with people looking camp though. So not sure why someone would suggest otherwise?

Retiring numbers is just sad - and in British Basketball? Don't make me laugh Guilford/Surrey Heat retired the no.6 vest after Brian Dux had to stop playing after his accident.

Nothing at all (I was brought up to like Liberace by my mother who was a piano and music teacher and adored him) but the whole American gaudy ring thing always makes me laugh in their sports world. A medal suffices for the Olympics and other sports.

Retireng numbers is an accepted part of basketball, admittedly overdone is some places, and players generally have a say in the design of title rings. But I'll bow to your superior kbowledge

The idea of a ring dates back to the 50s when as a class leaves high school they get a class ring to celebrate their success in school.
This has since carried on to American sports.
I like the idea of both the ring and retiring numbers when worthy.
My team have a rule where if we win the league or playoffs we all have to get matching tattoos, luckily we're pretty crap

I don't think there's a single Pro-Basketball player in the world that wouldn't wear a NBA playoff championship ring (if they won it)

Annoyingly it was impressive.

Are you thinking of EJ Harrison? Won the NCAA tournament with UConn?

Its just IRF opening his mouth and letting his belly rumble. The usual. Kieron hasn't been with the Rocks for long enough to retire said jersey. Only a handful of years. Me and my belly rumbling again!!

Me and my belly rumbling again!! That's a crazy decision that devalues the whole retire a jersey thing to me. He hasn't exactly guided the Rocks to unprecedented success has he? So what have they based this on? Can't be longevity? If it's just that he's a good player then I'm sure Rob Yanders will be getting a ceremony soon too...

Disappointed and slightly surprised at this. As much as he's an excellent and well respected player (possibly one of Scotland's best ever?), I don't see where he's truly made his mark in Rocks history. I've no doubt many folk will lap this up. C'est la vie.

C'est la vie. Yeah, I agree. Great ambassador for the sport, amazing career, fantastic role model, but what was his impact at Rocks? Although, I might change my mind if he leads the team to a playoff final win.

Agree with gonk and bigz. Was certainly surprised by this and no idea what merits the award.

Probably the owner, misguidedly, trying to get the fans back onside after the turbulent time he's given us. I'm just waiting on EJ's number being retired now.

4 seasons at the end of his career, ****e for half of this season (until change of coach and announcing retirement).
I think we’re getting a bit carried away retiring numbers (surely that should be for exceptional service & achievement?).
I doubt Achara asked for or expected it (think the owner said Achara was against it).
That said - might win the playoffs!
I would have waited and made it a fan event when the season actually over or made presentation at first game of next season (in the big hall, video on the screen etc.). It was a nonsense interrupting warm up and game preparation. Got the sense Achara would rather be warming up.

Its what this opens the Rocks up to that irks me.
Now Murray's is going to have to be retired without question - he's given a lot more to the Rocks than Achara.
How long does Fraser have to stay to have his retired?
If Bunyan wins a trophy next season and happens to have the game of his life in the final, does he get his retired? Would that be harsh on the likes of Yanders who was consistently excellent without winning anything (I'd argue retiring Achara's already makes it seem harsh on him tbh)?
This isn't to say of course that Achara isn't a fantastic pillar of the community and has been in Scotland's top two ever players (he has and is) - but its his contribution to the ROCKS (not Scotland) that I feel doesn't warrant it to be honest.

I hear Bunyan has been at the Rocks so long that when retires that they will be renamed "Johnny Bunyans Glasgow Rocks." in honour of him.

Why do I keep reading four years? It'll be five in a few weeks. Five and a bit if you include his brief stint in 2012. That's not an enormous term of service but it is significant in a league where most teams struggle to keep hold of quality players for more than a couple of seasons.
I also think the idea that he effectively only gave the arse end of his career to the club is well wide of the mark. He first put on a Rocks jersey at 29 and seemingly committed the remainder of his career to the team at 31, an age where he could probably have been doing quite a bit better. I'm sure it was suggested at the time that he was turning down more money and/or better opportunities elsewhere. And I don't find that at all hard to believe given that he played Eurocup (not the competition Riders were in this season, a much better one) the previous year.
Have Rocks been brilliantly successful during his time there? Obviously not. But I'm confident they'd have been a fair bit worse without him. Reality check... As high as fans seem to want to set the bar for this team, we're talking here about a club that's won one trophy in 20 years... Hardly an organisation with an illustrious history of hoovering up silverware.
Whilst I'm no Scottish basketball historian, I imagine he probably is one of the country's best ever players. That's likely a factor in this. In BBL terms he's also been a one club player (quite possibly to the detriment of his career) unlike some of these other names being thrown up.
Does all of that mean his number should be retired? I don't know, or care that much if I'm honest. But I am surprised that the sentiment against it is so strong. Not sure some Rocks fans fully appreciate what they've had here.

I don't think the issue is one of appreciating Achara as a player or not. It's more one of believing that the retiral of a jersey should be a rare and impressive event.
If Basketball Scotland had decided to retire his jersey I reckon support would be widespread.
Edit: The 4 seasons thing likely comes from a post the Rocks made on FB where they stated it was 4 seasons.

The other 3 retired jerseys at Rocks are
Maclean Berry Davis
How do they compare. If I've understood it correctly only Davis played more than 4 years?

Genuinely can't comment on the first two. I don't know the background.
Davis is the sort of "once in a lifetime" name i'm looking for when I think of a jersey retiral. Perhaps i'm simply being too fussy or difficult to please. The context McT provides is certainly food for thought.
Edit: More info:
Berry played for 5 seasons, won league MVP and a play-off title.
Maclean played for 3 season (I think) and was the coach for some of one of them? Possibly related to his wider Scottish basketball contribution too?

Riders don't have retired numbers but have a hall of fame they launched
Right now it has 7 players in it. All old time players from the 1960s and 1970s I believe
But in due course I think Drew and Tyler from my watching era need adding. Maybe Barry Lamble?
And Rob if it's not just for players.
I'm sure there are players that others will put forward to add
