A complete history of basketball on the BBC, starting from 1948 to present day. From Harlem Globetrotter games regularly featuring in primetime, to the NBA on a Saturday night, to live BBL games on weekend afternoons. genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?order=asc&q=basketball#searchI found this quite interesting to go though, apologies if it’s just me, but hopefully some others enjoy this trip down memory lane…

LTFan, no its certainly not just you who will find this fascinating.
Its already taken me quite a while to go thru just the first few pages, as I'm pausing to relate to a lot of the entries.
All about the Harlem Globetrotters in the early days, but then moving on to coverage of early British Finals, the annual turn-of-the-year tournament at Crystal Palace that featured some European powerhouses of the day such as Red Star Belgrade and USA representative sides.
Then Larry Bird in the 1979 NCAA finals vs Magic Johnson. Wow.
Though I experienced basketball through playing at school, (but with a useless PE teacher who just shoved us into the gym on a rainy day and largely left us to our own devices rather than even giving us the basics of how to play), my own spectating interest only came in on the back of the primetime Channel 4 coverage with the tagline of "Britain's fastest growing team sport".
Looking back I now regret that, through ignorance, I missed out on a lot of the early BBC material...

Yes - I remember that one very well!
And that Christmas (or was it the following year?) I distinctly remember watching the late and very great Doncaster Panthers giving the University of North Carolina (with a young bloke called Jordan) quite a decent game in the Crystal Palace International Tournament.
Crumbs I'm getting old.

I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the shared link. I got into basketball during the NBA Channel 4 coverage days, so most of this BBC coverage is new to me. Although I do remember watching some BBL games on Grandstand.
So Michael Jordan played at the National Sports Centre against Doncaster Panthers as part of the Crystal Palace International Tournament? My earliest experience of actually watching basketball live was watching Crystal Palace play the National Sports Centre in the 90s. I know despite it’s somewhat unimpressive appearance these days the NSC has great basketball heritage, but I didn’t know this little fact.

Michael Jordan never played in the tournament!
UNC played in the 1979 version. Jordan attended UNC 1981-84.
However James Worthy did play for UNC in that tournament.
UNC beat Doncaster, lost to Leiden in the sem-final, before beating Crystal Palace in the 3rd-4th game.

Michael Jordan never played in the tournament! Well that explains why I’d never heard of it happening then!

Michael Jordan never played in the tournament! Well that explains why I’d never heard of it happening then! It could have been Fred Jordan a distance 5 th cousin to a young lad called Mike.
