Another really old user of the original whatsbev here, I think I was the first global mod on the old ezboard. I was 17 or so then, I’m 36 now! Whilst I lurk now (and will continue to do so), I’m happy that the forum lives for another day. I made a lot of good friends back then, enjoyed playing pickup games for the whatsbev team and travelling around the country meeting everyone and chatting basketball. It’s great to see that really old posters are still involved in the forum and basketball. From the old days we have FIBA journalists, international table officials, coaches and amazing, passionate fans. Hopefully whatsbev can continue with similar success Phil Yeah baby! You're back!

I've been here since day 1 - the site turns 19 in a few weeks. It's older than a lot of British teams, it's been around since before Michael Jordan unretired for the last time and played for Washington. It's been around longer than Zion Williamson has been alive! How do you know when it started do you have an actual date, I must have been really near the beginning then if that's the case?

There was a team of sorts, just forum posters got together to play a some friendlies. If I remember we played at the Thunderdome (RIP Derby Storm), Ponds Forge and another leisure centre in Sheffield. We could all play, but none of us could really play. There was an old forum member who had a scholarship, but that’s about as good as we got. Think of a game with lots of missed shots and turnovers and that’s pretty much it. The website dates back to August 2000. I’ve copied some internet archives of the old whatsbev (when it was an actual website), and the forum. Some funny takes on there, including someone saying Tim Duncan made a mistake not signing with Orlando 🤣 web.archive.org/web/20000823154913/http://www.whatsbev.com/

While we're reminiscing, I remember a particular poster getting very upset about the implementation of the possession arrow which they saw as a threat to the Western world 🤪 I forgot to say thanks to KO and the other mods for picking up the baton - thanks!

The possession arrow is a bit crap in the final minute, though. Who won/lost the tip 39 minutes earlier shouldn't be a factor down the stretch.
I dunno when I started posting but it was after Bev had moved towards being mainly about British ball

In the early days we used to have message sessions where people dropped in or out over an odd hour or two!! There were some very funny discussions on there!! There were even some romances that blossomed from Whatsbev, one at least still continues today, some others, the people concerned I'm sure wish they don't remember!!

I presume that there must be some sort of ongoing cost to run a public forum like this? As a 13 year vet of this site I would more then happily chuck a few quid down on a voluntary basis if it helps admin cost? Just set up a just giving page or something else and I'm sure you'll easily recoupe any ongoing cost.

I know when it started because I was posting on another forum called the Globallers, along with Jez who informed us he was setting this up as a better option. Initially there was a Globallers sub forum but it quickly became redundant and binned. I am almost certain the date was 2nd October 2000, because for quite some time after that it was often remarked upon or a birthday celebrated. That also ties in with when our Bev was hosting the NBA on ITV2 and making a shambles of it. The name relates to the NBA yet it has become more of a British basketball site over the years!

As you may have noticed the site was shut down for a few days much to my despair I discovered this was to be permanent and after 19 years of being on here and not quite sure what to do with myself launched a last ditch Bolton Wanderers style takeover. So we're back here to continue as normal the odd thing may change here and there but it's business as usual, however if anyone does have any ideas please send them my way. One thing I had thought was the out reach on social media but there's now plenty of time for discussion. How about making an NBL 19/20 season thread as opposed to the one with 60 pages!

Ladies and Gentlemen, after 4 months I am back from my annual summer break from the forum. What did I miss? Quite a lot it seems! I just wanted to add my thanks to ko25, and anyone else involved, for saving this forum. As for Gonk, I don’t know exactly why he’s walked away from these forums, nor is it my business, but I’d like to thank him for all his years’ service. I take a break away from these forums, and to some degree basketball, for a few months every summer to focus on other things in life. So I can completely understand wanting to, or needing to, focus on other priorities – if that is indeed the case. Whatever the situation, I wish him all the best and hope we see him back here someday. I’m not sure exactly when I first joined WhatsBev, I believe it was around 2003 or 2004, but I always find this forum informative and entertaining – so thank you to everyone involved in running it and contributing to it. Now let’s hope we have another interesting and fun season.

Having looked through this thread I've looked at all the comments.
Whatever reason gonk, or Andy as I knew him, decided to step away he made his choice.
I agree with the point regarding shutting the forum without warning, it would have been better if Gonk had made a thread in advance of his decision and gave someone else the option of taking this proud institution forward. As it is he chose not to do so and we must move on. As I said it was Gonk who got me on What's Bev and I give him credit for that and for helping me get into the sport in this country.
Goodbye gonk & Good luck

I remember one Fat Lads v Whatsbev game at Ponds Forge. I was awful (I actually didn’t play so that explained that bit) but then proceeded to win the half time shoot out going 5/5. Won a crap CD album. I also organised the Derby fans v Riders fans at the Thundersome one year before they thrashed us later (I assume a thrashing, we only won three games in the last year) As for the year of those summer challenges, well that was 2005. I was on a work placement year from uni and got nothing done...that was Jez aka Elvis Aaahhhh the olden days. P.s Hersey hasn’t changed though

Figured out how to block someone, makes this new era whatsbev 10x better Please tell me how to do this (In the past there used to be some bullets regarding posting on this forum. Personally I think there is someone on here who fits the definition of a basketball kit - perhaps some consideration needs to be given to dealing with that behaviour.)

I’d like to suggest we remove the titles such as ‘Rookie’ or ‘Bench Player’ from under usernames when someone posts. At the moment someone has the title of ‘Basketball Legend’ which is extremely inaccurate.
