The ever elusive PLB are advertising to junior positions as league operators. I also saw they tweeted the other day saying Ovie Soko.. before deleting it.

!5 years and they still haven't staged a game. Truly astounding that they're now offering pocket money for someone in London to help run their imaginary league. Story here if you don't know what the hell we're on about.

Why try create a competing league when the current ones aren't exactly pulling in mad numbers as is?...

Because, being American, Ron Scott, was going to do it so much better. We're still waiting.

Knowing it was going to start any day now was the only thing getting me through this lockdown! Gutted, had my season ticket money all ready. Was looking forward to visiting all the newly created teams in those hotbeds of British basketball. They've just slipped my mind for the moment, can't quite recall where they were springing up!

I was waiting for him to blame the outbreak on the bbl.
I feel for any good honest person that has worked for this charade in the anticipation of a league commencing.

Is it definitely dead (or, any less zombie-like)? The job advert above on the PLB Twitter was to work for ‘Basketball Entertainment Partners LTD’, and Companies House still lists an active company under that name: beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/11629617Is the project limping on under a new umbrella somehow?

Probably. I like the fact that you're doing my research for me. I spent the afternoon trying to track down friends of someone who's died of the plague for a national newspaper. Decent money, but very depressing. Rhamadhan - call me Ron, he even lied about that - SCott and his mate are both former directors of the original company. The real story is probably how they lost £3mill. That sounds seriously dodgy.

Number23 good find. All directors have zero previous companies in the UK smells bad doesn't it.
Hersey where did you see it was finished?

Yeah, there's some interesting names. Although most of the big names - bar Scott - put very little money in. The over all numbers for a league that never played a game are quite outstanding, though.

Could the PLB ever have actually worked if they'd attempted to stage some games?

I think it's fairly clear Ron Scott couldn't. Part of his problem was he didn't want something organic. It had to be massive from the word go. I wrote a couple of years ago about the logistical issues, but if he'd been willing to start small and grow maybe it was possible.
ironically, if you had some cash to splash, six months time - when the madness has ended - would be the perfect time to start a rival to the BBL as everyone's going to be financially damaged.

How much cash would you need to splash would a rival need to be a full blown breakaway like the Premier League was presumably you'd need the backing of at least half the BBL and half D1?

I really don't know. I'm not sure what D1 could bring to the table. I don't think you really need more that eight teams, at least not to start with. You need them all to have similar venues and playing budgets to make it a competitive league. They key is getting on telly, whether it's Sky/BT or even terrestrial on a decent slot that doesn't move at the whim of the broadcaster. Considering Sky & BT are funded by both advertisers and subscribers, there's no reason why a proper sport should have to pay for its games to be shown. But clearly it does, and I have no idea how much that would cost and whether there could be a genuine return on the investment required.

The interesting comparison this summer would have been the Hundred
An establishment sport, significant marketing budget (millions), tv support and starting up a new artificial league and plonking it down in the middle of summer. If that had failed then it would pretty much answer all the questions for Scott and co.
Even if it had succeeded I would still be extremely sceptical that it would transfer to basketball.
