The audio really did detract from what a great game it was.

I watched the game with a mate of mine who isn't into basketball at all (he spent a lot of the time asking what the level is like compared to the NBA to put it in context), and even he was saying he couldn't bare the commentary. Going mental at every made basket including free throws is not a way to pique interest. We ended up putting it on mute, and even that annoyed me because the atmosphere in there was great. Nice one Lithuania.
I too was amazed when I found out who it was as well, given when last I spoke to Josh Bett he had an out and out English accent.....

Not strictly on topic but I do remember when Brighton Bears played in Europe, and faced a very good Lietuvos Rytas team at the Brighton Centre.
The Lithuanian contingent was massive - by far the largest number of supporters for an away team I've seen at a basketball match. And they really brought the noise - but that also had the effect of energising the home fans. Of course it helped that the game was very close, we lost by 2 points (and amazingly Bears beat the Lithuanians, who had some excellent players including 3x NBA Championship winning benchwarmer Dickey Simpkins, in the return match) - but it was an incredible atmosphere, I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.
My recurring theme was that maybe a strong contingent of passionate Lithuanian supporters could have the effect of showing British fans how it's done.

I watched GB play Greece at our arena and I was gobsmacked by the Greek fans who were brilliant. They never stopped shouting & clapping for their team but they also applauded good moves by GB as well which really surprised me. Best atmosphere in a basketball game that I've ever experienced.

It’s funny how the crowds at basketball games differ around the world, the difference between a British crowd, and American crowd, and a lot of European crowds is really quite interesting. I guess it’s largely a cultural thing. The Lithuanians certainly make their presence known at Crystal Palace. This coupled with the fact it was a London derby made for an a great atmosphere. Although the horns were a little annoying… don’t know whether they were Royals or Lithuanian fans though. And full respect to the man who waved that large Lithuanian flag for almost the entirety of the game, he was like a man possessed. As mentioned before though, the only disappointing thing about this is that I believe that once the Lav brothers leave so will all the additional fans.

I watched 2 games this weekend… the Riders/Eagles game and the Royals/Lions game. In terms of the coverage, wow what a difference. The Riders coverage was great – good (automated) camera work, good on screen stats, good commentary. The only thing that let it down was the audio issues for the first few minutes. The Royals coverage was disappointing – bad (manual) camera work with the crowd regularly blocking the view, poor on screen stats that for the first half of the game were updating about 20 seconds ahead of what we were actually seeing, poor commentary from just a single commentator who was regularly making mistakes. The way Riders produce coverage should be sent out to all BBL teams as a prime example of how it should, and can, be done.

As much as I love the Greeks support and passion for their teams (its class, just the type of atmosphere I'd relish if I were playing), they can be a bit ott at times. Talk to John Amaechi and what they did to his pet tortoise, for example.

It does help that the Riders often have the voice of the BBL Dan Routledge on the mic too.
Predictably, Eagles and Riders are the best I've seen so far. Rocks wasn't bad either - albeit better in the main arena than it was the small hall.
I watched the Eagles/Cheshire game last night - the commentator calling it an "end to end game" and often spouting a bit of nonsense (I think he does Giants games too), the camera shaking when the fans conducted a defence chant, and people walking in front of the camera quite often really got on my nerves....

Absolutely… having Dan Routledge on comms will automatically improve the overall quality of the coverage. I agree that Newcastle’s coverage is good too. Lions haven’t had a home game yet, so I’m looking forward to seeing their efforts this season. Here’s hoping for some improved commentators. What’s the new deal with installing these automatic cameras at arenas that aren’t owned by the team, i.e. can they install one at the Copper Box? Can they be ‘temporarily’ installed for just game nights?

Or turtle, I cant really remember which one it was but it was definitely one or the other.
He had a bad game, and his own teams' fans decided they'd make sure he didn't play badly again by nailing his actual pet to his door by its shell. Its in his autobiography.

So does that suggest the automatic cameras will only be used in venues where it's been agreed they can be installed, or does it just mean they haven't figured out how to 'temporarily' install one just for the duration of a game yet.

Surely it's basically just a robotic arm with a heavy weight on the base to stop it moving about? I can't see that you need to install anything permanent in order to pivot a camera?

To be fair it IS a well known motivational coaching technique.

I’m not saying the automatic cameras can’t be temporarily set up, I suspect they can, but I don’t believe the camera itself actually moves. I think it’s fixed on the entire court and then zooms in/pans and scans within that set frame automatically as the action moves about the court. Having said that I haven’t been to a game and seen one in action yet so someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

Having said that I haven’t been to a game and seen one in action yet so someone can correct me if I’m wrong. Interesting, I had noticed that the image was crisper (higher resolution) when viewing the whole court when I watched some, which would fit in with what you suggest. It's also a lot easier to just pan the image than physically move the camera. Also the tracking would likely require a camera to view the whole court all the time to decide where it should point the viewer, so in your suggestion there's no need for a 2nd camera to achieve this. So I think you're probably right. Ionically it's almost exactly the same thing I aimed to set up when I started, the idea being that you can get smoother camera action doing the panning via computer, rather than human, and also by recording the whole court all the time you never miss that vital game winning shot etc that a human could easily not capture. Having said that, after playing with it for a long time I decided instead for multiple fixed angles, the camera movement was in effect far too robotic which made it less enjoyable IMO.

At the ECA it is mounted to the ceiling above the balcony, as far as I know you're right with it being a fixed wide angle shot which is cropped to what is seen on the stream although dont quote me on that. We also used it to film Sundays WBBL game which was played on one of the cross courts rather than the main court so it seems like it is be a pretty versatile set up. I'm just thinking whether the amount of calibration needed to sync it up with the hall/gameplay makes it unfeasible for a temporary set up?

Just a quick test, run Basketball.exe (not in windowed mode), move your mouse around to move the camera, hit escape or Alt + F4 to quit. we.tl/t-MDWKhdEJoKOr better still, use the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom in/out: we.tl/t-ryKKszg7sNThe hard part would be getting the computer to recognise where the play is happening and auto pan/zoom as appropriate. This part lags behind a little too much at the moment, if they sped it up it would work better for fast breaks etc. To be honest, since you've got 2 commentators, one assumes that it wouldn't be too hard to have it so that they simply hold a left/right button to hold a fixed view of the court when free throws are happening etc. Then simply let go once it's done and let the auto camera take back control again. One assumes that's how it works at half time etc currently, they press a button to fix the view of the whole court, rather than have the camera try and pan all over the place!

Last one for today! Added smoothing and the ability to hold either left or right arrow to smoothly pan and zoom to either basket, for free throws etc. When you let go it returns to where your mouse is, although the zoom doesn't return (can't be bothered to add that feature for now!) we.tl/t-2Uh06YX0Bf

Ok I lied, just one more!
The program needs some adjustments to work for different resolutions, only designed for 4k screens at the moment.
If you want to see it working, and don't want to download the program anyway, here's a quick vid showing it in action:
(Cursor is only shown on screen so you can see the way the camera follows it)
