Week 21
It was a high-scoring week in the BBL Championship with six teams hitting more than 90 points and two going through the century in just five games, resulting in an All-Star 5 paced by big men from opposite ends of the country, alongside a pair of recent acquisitions and GB International Ovie Soko.
CJ Gettys – Newcastle Eagles Almost a permanent fixture in the All-Star 5 – making his sixth appearance in the eight weeks since he joined Newcastle – Gettys now has three of the season’s top five Performance Points totals after scoring 30 points on an amazing 14-16 (87%) shooting against London Lions, adding nine rebounds and six assists as one of the premier passing bigs that the BBL has seen in recent years.
Rashad Hassan – Plymouth Raiders Plymouth picked up a second win in a row, having gone winless for three months, by scoring 111 points on Surrey Scorchers at home, paced by Hassan off the bench who makes his first All-Star 5 appearance in a similar timescale. The American forward scored 26 points in under 30 minutes, missing just two of his 13 field goal attempts (84%) and completing a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Matthew Bryan-Amaning – Surrey Scorchers In just his second appearance for Scorchers, Bryan-Amaning went toe-to-toe with Hassan in that game, himself scoring 25 points, including 7-8 (87%) free-throws as he proved hard to handle. The British forward added nine rebounds, three steals and two assists as Surrey fell short on the road.
Corey Johnson – Leicester Riders Another recent signing, in just his third game for the club Leicester’s Corey Johnson became only the fifth player in the last decade to hit ten three-pointers in a game. He shot an amazing 66% from beyond the arc as Riders edged Surrey on the road, finishing with 32 points, to go with five rebounds and four assists. His shooting kept Riders in the game as they trailed for much of it, including the fourth quarter trey that gave them their first lead of the second half.
Ovie Soko – London Lions Providing resistance to Gettys in Friday night’s top of the table clash at Eagles Community Arena, Soko came from the bench to score 33 points in just 28 minutes for London Lions, shooting 66% inside on 18 attempts. He added five rebounds, four of which were at the offensive end, with four steals, as he scored eight of his points on those possessions created by hustle plays.
Off the bench: Lovell Cook (Surrey Scorchers), Mike Morsell (Newcastle Eagles), Greg Pryor (Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks), Josh Wilcher (Plymouth Raiders), Nick Lewis (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks), Connor Cashaw (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks), Gareth Murray (Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks).

Week 22
A bumper week of action in the BBL Championship and BBL Trophy resulted in heightened competition for this week’s All-Star 5 spots. It includes four debut appearances, paced by Mark Hughes of Worcester Wolves, and includes a pair of Leicester Riders after they made it five wins in a row with a weekend double.
Mark Hughes – Worcester Wolves In the best performance of his professional career to date – and All-Star 5 debut – Hughes was irrepressible at both ends of the floor as Wolves put a huge 116 points on Plymouth Raiders. He shot 71% from the field and made 4-5 (80%) three-pointers for 29 points, including eight straight points for his team in the third quarter run that broke the game open. He added six rebounds, four assists and three steals in a great all-round display.
Demonte Flannigan – Cheshire Phoenix Flannigan fought gamely as his team slipped to defeat against his former club London Lions on Wednesday night. On his return to the Copper Box Arena he was close to a double-double with 27 points and nine rebounds, shooting 64% inside and making two of his four three-point attempts.
Ian Smith – Team Solent Kestrels Kestrels dominated Bristol Flyers in the semi-final first leg to become the first National Basketball League Division 1 side to qualify for the BBL Trophy Final at Emirates Arena. Their point guard made his first eight shots as they raced into an early lead, scoring 15 of his 29 points in the opening quarter. He shot a perfect 6-6 inside, 5-5 at the line, and 4-6 (66%) three-pointers; adding five assists and five rebounds.
Namon Wright – Leicester Riders Riders recorded their biggest ever win over title-chasing rivals Newcastle Eagles on Friday night, and Wright was the dominant force in that performance. He scored 29 points, shooting 75% from the field and making 4-5 (80%) three-pointers, adding a perfect 7-7 at the line. He also had six rebounds and two assists, as his team ended the weekend by jumping above the Eagles into third place in the BBL Championship.
Josh Ward-Hibbert – Leicester Riders The only player this week to have previously featured in an All-Star 5, Ward-Hibbert turned in one of the performances of the season from the bench in that game. He recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes, shooting 6-7 (85%) on the inside while adding three assists and three steals. Riders trailed when he checked in after five minutes, but he had five points, six rebounds and an assist before the first quarter was done and his team led by double-figures.
Off the bench: Levi Bradley (Bristol Flyers), Connor Cashaw (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks), Matt Scott (Plymouth Raiders), Terrell Vinson (Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks), Kofi Josephs (Worcester Wolves), Sade Aded-Hussein (Newcastle Eagles), Bennett Koch (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks).

Week 23
This week’s BBL All-Star 5 sees the return of Brandon Peel after a thirteen week hiatus, alongside another London Lion after they secured a huge top of the table win over Leicester Riders at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday.
Brandon Peel – London Lions Peel makes his fifth appearance of the season after leading London Lions back to the top of the BBL Championship, just one point shy of a record win over Leicester Riders at 99-65. He had a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 77% inside and making 3-7 (42%) three-point attempts, scoring five early points in the opening 17-2 surge that Lions never looked back from.
Callum Jones – Manchester Giants On Sunday, Giants came incredibly close to securing their first league win of the season in-front of a sold out Manchester crowd, with captain Callum Jones playing all but one minute of their overtime defeat to Plymouth Raiders. Jones shot 66% from the field on his way to 26 points, adding five assists; but although he only missed five shots, one of those would have won the game on the buzzer.
Mike Morsell – Newcastle Eagles Eagles came from behind to beat Surrey Scorchers at Eagles Community Arena on Friday night, led by Morsell’s 22 points, accompanied by eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. He kept Eagles in the game as they struggled early on, scoring eight first quarter points when they trailed by double-figures, and did a bit of everything – including a steal and assist followed by a rebound and assist – in the 17-2 run that decided the game early in the third.
Rashad Hassan – Plymouth Raiders Plymouth’s big man makes his third appearance of the season after he led them through overtime on the road at Manchester Giants to secure a crucial win in the Play-off race. It was a typically efficient performance as he scored 22 points on 62% shooting and completed a double-double with 12 rebounds, including the go-ahead basket to open the extra period.
Buay Tuach – London Lions Alongside teammate Brandon Peel, Tuach was the spark as Lions dominated Leicester, with the former NBA G-League man scoring 11 of his 19 points in the first quarter run that effectively decided the game, including some spectacular above the rim plays. He shot 63% from the floor, and added five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in a do-it-all display.
Off the bench: Gentrey Thomas (Bristol Flyers), Parker Jackson-Cartwright (Cheshire Phoenix), Namon Wright (Leicester Riders), Matt Scott (Plymouth Raiders), Darien Nelson-Henry (Leicester Riders), Cortez Edwards (Worcester Wolves), Eric Lockett (Bristol Flyers).

Week 24
This week’s All-Star 5, paced by Mike Morsell, includes a pair of stars from Sunday’s North West derby, as Molten BBL Player of the Month Parker Jackson-Cartwright becomes the overall appearances leader.
Mike Morsell – Newcastle Eagles The title-chasing Eagles ultimately came up short against rivals Worcester Wolves on Friday night, but Morsell led the resistance almost single-handedly. The American forward scored 27 points and proved hard to handle as he made 11 trips to the free-throw line, making 10 of his attempts. He added eight rebounds and three assists for a fourth All-Star 5 showing.
Parker Jackson-Cartwright – Cheshire Phoenix Cheshire’s irrepressible point guard makes his seventh appearance of the season, the most of any player. Fresh from winning the February Molten BBL Player of the Month, he led his team to a North West derby victory over Manchester Giants with a double-double of 20 points and 13 assists, including five points in the key run across the halftime break and seven in the fourth quarter as Giants fought back.
Jalen Hayes – Cheshire Phoenix Hayes was the other half of the key duo in Sunday’s derby, himself posting a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds, leading all scorers while adding three assists and two steals. Giants were back within two shots at the end of the third quarter, but Hayes scored the final five points to restore a double-digit lead that proved decisive heading down the stretch.
Nick Lewis – B. Braun Sheffield Sharks On Friday night, Nick Lewis was the spark in a Roses Derby win for Sheffield over Manchester, pouring in 26 points including an astonishing 6-7 (85%) three-pointers. He hit three in succession as part of a dominant 16-2 start to the game, and then scored seven points in the second stanza to regain control after Giants had led, making his third appearance of the season as a weekly standout.
Lovell Cook – Surrey Scorchers Perhaps the weekend’s greatest heroics came from Lovell Cook, as he inspired Surrey Scorchers to victory over league-leading London Lions in the final seconds in front of a sold out Surrey crowd. Cook totalled 26 points, nine rebounds and four assists; but the performance will be remembered for him scoring eight straight points for his team inside the final two minutes to turn around a deficit, including a stunning ‘and-one’ play that gave them a 96-95 lead with 51 seconds left.
Off the bench: Matthew Bryan-Amaning (Surrey Scorchers), Greg Pryor (Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks), Amir Williams (Worcester Wolves), Connor Cashaw (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks), Ali Fraser (Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks), Ovie Soko (London Lions), Levi Bradley (Bristol Flyers).

Week 25
After leading Newcastle Eagles to victory in the BBL Trophy Final on Sunday, both of their bigs – CJ Gettys and Darius Defoe – make the All-Star 5 this week, alongside a pair of Rocks whose double-winning weekend on the road sees them atop the BBL Championship. Gettys ties Parker Jackson-Cartwright to lead all players with seven All-Star 5 appearances for the season.
CJ Gettys – Newcastle Eagles
The American seven-footer returned from a spell on the sidelines to turn in an MVP-winning performance in the BBL Trophy Final at Emirates Arena, playing 40 minutes in the overtime victory and delivering a huge double-double of 21 points and 17 rebounds. Crucially, he scored his team’s first six points in the extra period as the go-to man, and demonstrated that he is among the best passing bigs in the league by adding seven assists, flirting with a triple-double which would have been a Trophy Final first.
Connor Cashaw – B. Braun Sheffield Sharks
Cashaw was almost a one-man show as Sharks slipped to defeat on the road at Worcester Wolves on Friday night, scoring over a third of his team’s points. He finished on 25, shooting 69% from the floor and making all three of his long-range attempts, while adding eight rebounds and five assists.
Darius Defoe – Newcastle Eagles
The 35-year-old became the most decorated player in the history of the BBL Trophy, winning it for a seventh time, as he was required to play 43 minutes for the short-handed Eagles. Like his frontcourt partner, Defoe had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, including 12 key third quarter points that gave Eagles a cushion they needed late on. He made nine trips to the free-throw line as Team Solent Kestrels struggled with his experience and physicality, and grabbed the crucial rebound off Solent’s missed shot with under one second to play.
Greg Pryor – Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks
Rocks are top of the BBL Championship after winning twice on the road in the South West at the weekend, getting off to a good start as point guard Greg Pryor led them past Plymouth Raiders. He scored 15 points on 6-10 (60%) shooting, and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds from the guard position, as well as adding five assists and two steals. In a tight game, he scored his team’s last five points in the final two minutes to secure the win.
Gareth Murray – Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks
The next night, it was captain Gareth Murray who spurred Rocks to victory at Bristol Flyers. He missed just one of his 11 shot attempts en route to 23 points, hitting 7-7 inside and 3-4 from beyond the three-point line, adding three steals as he got it done at both ends. Rocks won every quarter, and he scored 10 points in the third period, including six in a 10-0 surge straight out of the blocks, as they turned a narrow advantage into a double-figure one.
Off the bench: Amir Williams (Worcester Wolves), Jamell Anderson (Leicester Riders), Corey Johnson (Leicester Riders), Elliot Sentance (Team Solent Kestrels), Rashad Hassan (Plymouth Raiders), Levi Bradley (Bristol Flyers), Yorick Williams (Manchester Giants)
