"The audience is largely made up of families and if someone stands up and hurls a torrent of abuse at a player or a referee in front of my 12 year old then that is not acceptable. I want to teach my children that they should respect the opposition and the officials." I'd agree with that. There is a certain irony however to Scorchers fans complaining about language/abuse as there is a small section of very vocal Scorchers supporters who hurl abuse at opposing players, coaches and officials. They might not swear, but i would say they don't generate a family atmosphere! I wonder if I'm going to the same games... I didn't hear the swearing at Tayo that started this discussion and I haven't heard "a small section...who hurl abuse at opposing players..." Maybe I should ask my daughter if she's heard it !!

Genuine question... is the fact we sell it as a “family event” the reason there is zero atmosphere at 99% of bbl games?? Yes. Have long thought this and the conversation in this thread epitomises it. The reason this sport will never be taken seriously is because it’s seen as a family entertainment alternative to the cinema or Go Ape, not a sport. The atmosphere at most BBL venues is dead. I watch football every week, hear lots of swearing and can assure you not everyone who lets emotions run high is a “hooligan”. I’m not advocating all out anti social behaviour but one fan swears and they’re branded a hooligan. That’s laughable, sorry. Royals have it right and the Lithuanians at Crystal Palace are the reason I go there right now, rather than Surrey or Lions. I know it will probably fade away once the Lav Twins leave but I’ve waited decades for a proper European style atmosphere in this country so will enjoy it while it lasts. I still remember the Siaulai fans at the Spectrum FWIW... I completely agree with this. I remember an old thread where Gonk brought into question the ‘family game’ element of the BBL, my opinion is that it’s gone way over the top in Britain. With that being said, I can see why clubs do go down that route- it’s just not for me. I have to say, since being based on the continent, I’ve enjoyed the match night experience much, much more. People show far more emotion, which I love and it absolutely filters down to the players on the court. Yes, there is swearing on occasion, but it’s a sports match. It’s not a trip to the local crèche, it’s a competitive environment. Like Bigz, maybe I’m strange- but there’s something captivating about watching a Serbian heavy waving a flag and going absolutely berserk every time the opposition has a free-throw in a derby match. Oh, and for the record, if the fan in question was referring to Tayo’s ability to design a basketball jersey, he’d be right.

At Worcester, family orientated but still passionate and loud. So who ever said that the BBL atmosphere is dead needs to come to Worcester

I still remember the Siaulai fans at the Spectrum FWIW... This is spot on!! If I didn't support a team but loved basketball, I'd be going out of my way to go to Royals games at the moment! It's electric, it's fun, it's passionate! It's what competitive sport should be about! I have never understood the general lack of emotion from basketball fans in this country & a lot of that is done to the 'family entertainment' issue. I think it's seen as an attraction as tvtigersfan says, same as a visit to the pictures/theatre etc. It's somewhere to be entertained for a couple of hours before going home! I can be rather loud on occasions & the look of total bemusement on so many people's faces when I am loud is ridiculous. I have been told before that I'm spoiling peoples enjoyment because I'm daring to support my team! I've been threatened by jobsworth officials of being thrown out for calling the referee an idiot! It's a sport, emotions run high! Having said all that, I don't swear at games( I swear pretty much everywhere else, but not at basketball games!). There are many families, so I hold back, you can fully support your team without swearing, so I understand where drummergirl is coming from. The occasional slip us fine but if I heard a consistent barrage of swearing I would say something but I'm more than happy to hear as much abuse as possible for opposition players & coaches, particularly as the vast majority you hear is fairly light hearted & humorous.

So who ever said that the BBL atmosphere is dead needs to come to Worcester I would say the same for Flyers and Raiders too, although we did give Raiders plenty to shout about on Sunday, so maybe they were louder than usual (it was our first visit to the Pavilions)...

I can't seem to find this game on Youtube, was it streamed ? Not sure why it wasn’t on YouTube, but if you are on Facebook search for a page “hoops and hockey” there is footage and comms there plus post match interviews.
