Although it probably could have happened anytime in the past 3 years with his court time, Luol Deng has announced his retirement.
No BBL swansong unfortunately (unless Royals come calling in 2025 for his 40th).
Regardless of the rubbish that followed the Olympics, insurance issues, lack of commitment etc, he did his most to put our national team on the map during those few years.

Just to clarify, from what I’ve read at least, Deng has signed with Chicago Bulls for the 2019/2020 season and will retire after that.
I’ve also read that he’s retiring from the NBA, not necessarily the game, so I guess there’s still a possibility we’ll see him in the BBL at some point. Unlikely though I admit.

Unlikely.........about as unlikely as say, the Lav twins ever being signed to a BBL team, a GB basketball player being a Love Island star or MBA turning up in a London team. You should never say never these days.

I still think it’s unlikely though. Assuming he wants to keep playing, and that’s a huge assumption, I think he’d play in Europe before he even considers the BBL. Having said that, if he really wants to return home above everything else... I guy can dream...

It would be the best thing to happen for the league in a very, very long time.

Just looking into the details of this, and to correct myself it’s a 1 day contract with the Bulls. Nothing more than a symbolic gesture to allow him to officially retire with his long term team.

That length of contract is about the same length as some of the US imports have stayed in the BBL.

Outstanding players, outstanding man.
From his time at Brixton, through US high school and college and onto the NBA. Complete single-mindedness to be the best he could be.
And carried GB on his back to get us into the 2012 Olympics.

He still had 45 gb caps, it's not like he played 5 Olympic games then cleared off

The NBA dream had to end sometime, and as others mentioned it’s been a while since he saw regular minutes... I’d love to see him make some appearances in the BBL to help the sport here, but if this really is his moment to walk into the sunset he’s done amazing things both for GB and for young players in this country.

Best player this country's ever produced and it's not particlarly close. And on top of that, everything I've ever read, seen or heard about the guy suggests that his character matches his skills. It's a little sad that his career faded into silly memes and crappy contracts at the end (although the latter certainly wasn't bad for his bank balance), but hopefully with some distance he'll be remembered for the player he was at his peak in Chicago - before injuries and the wear and tear of Thibodeau years took their toll. From our perspective it'd be even better if he now somehow helped fix basketball in this country, but that might be an even bigger task than carrying around the various GB teams he was on. As it is, I'm glad that he's our primary representative on the global basketball landscape.

Fun fact, out of my office window right now I can see the high school he went to, and the basketball court he presumably practiced his skills on whilst he was a teenager. Great player, and I really hope he’s got some interest in coming home and still doing something in basketball. But maybe he feels the US is his home now after living there almost half his life.
Is OG Anunoby now the only British player in the NBA?
