Just noticed that WhatsBev favourite, CJ Gettys has made the 16-man training camp roster for the Indiana Pacers' G-League affiliate, Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Can't see it lasting personally, anyone else think he's got what it takes or only there for his height?

He can play no doubt about it and we've had decent dleague players in the bbl fail but he needs to change something. Get fit. Improve his discipline and you never know

Is it common for players to go undrafted in the NBA, go and play elsewhere in the world, return to the US and enter the NBA G League, and then get promoted to the NBA?! Seems like a very convoluted route, but I guess it could work!

Went undrafted, then went to play in Italy, got drafted to Idaho in the D-league as it was then, bounced around on a few 10 day contracts here and there (which are worthwhile as they qualify as seasons played for collective bargaining purposes where players can make a tidy pension) and actually hit a game winner for Utah Jazz during one of his ten day stints.
Spent a few seasons bouncing round various NBA teams, played in china turkey and Israel and is now in basketballing abyss. But it can be done, its just not that popular or frequent.

Interesting, thanks. I bow to your knowledge. And I suppose to be fair I think the average NBA G league salary is more than you’d typically get in most of Europe, so even if you didn’t eventually progress to the NBA it could still be a wise career move.

You'd be surprised (I was when I found out). Base G-League salary is $35,000.00 per season. Pros are that its a professional league at home in the USA and the opportunities are there even if they're few and far between, and the bonuses (of which there are a few available) can be around that per month - especially if youre a two way player with the NBA.
People have earned and will continue to earn more at the top end of the BBL compared to the base G-League salary, and that's earnings before the free accommodation and meals they get.

From what I understand G league salaries can vary wildly. Like you say, most players will earn something in line with what they’d typically get in Europe (minus any additional perks like accommodation, although the G league is a shorter 5 month season). But I think they’ve started offering a new type of contract this season to ‘elite’ players who aren’t yet old enough for the NBA draft, these contracts are $125,000 for the 5 month season. I assume these are somewhat few and far between though.

Is it common for players to go undrafted in the NBA, go and play elsewhere in the world, return to the US and enter the NBA G League, and then get promoted to the NBA?! Seems like a very convoluted route, but I guess it could work! The most obvious example of this happening recently is DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell. This is a guy who's actually played on British soil, against a BBL team. Started out in Denmark then signed a two way contract with the Nuggets. Made seven appearances for them last season and appears to be involved with the OKC Thunder now in some capacity. 'Elsewhere in the world' is a pretty broad heading. I don't think it's that uncommon for guys from top overseas leagues to get a few cracks at the NBA but examples of players making that transition from non-elite leagues are few and far between. Scraping onto a G-League roster doesn't exactly have you knocking on the door of the NBA. Taylor King successfully tried out with the Agua Caliente Clippers after his season at Riders. He averaged 3 ppg and was cut after nine games. I'm not sure there's that much to see here really. If Gettys lands a major role with this team it's a story of sorts but I imagine it's more likely that he goes a similar route to King and only plays minor minutes for however long he's around.

Bigz they 35k is top earner. In the g league you earn 1 of 3 salaries. 19k 25k or 35k. They're your only options. Its pitiful money but you play for the chance to be seen and called up. The 125k youth salary was set in place to stop Lavar ball and the jba, however no player has signed one.

I think the thing with the g league is you trade money for opportunity!! Yes you'll get more in Europe but if you get hot in the g league There's a chance of an nba deal! Miami have done it regularly with whiteside, khem burch, mcgruder Josh Richardson Kendrick nunn and the warriors with quinn cook alfonso McKinnie ect

I think the thing with the g league is you trade money for opportunity!! Well put. That's the key. The NBA seem to go out of their way to aim it at young, hungry, players. They could pay a lot more and keep more experienced players in the D League for years on end without any chance of them forging an NBA career. Generally players leave college, spend a year or two bouncing around the D League (plenty of players are gone within in a month, it should be looked at as $5k a month, rather than $35k a year) before either packing it in or going to Europe to earn more money. The carrot of a ten-day contract is considerable, though, as one makes the season a financial success, but it worth an equal announce for a player's CV. When I did the old gbbasketball.net site before London 2012, I covered anyone remotely GB linked in the D-League and it did seem a bit tin-pot at times, and although it has moved on quite a lot the NBA have no interest in making it anything more than a league to give a few prospects some game time and surround them with Gettys-like players. But as this bloke shows, the dream is always there.
