Interesting discussion about Manchester Giants. I agree that a team achieving <6 wins a season doesn’t really belong in the BBL. I also agree that in their current state it would be better for everyone, including Giants themselves, to be in NBL Div1 rather than the BBL. But here’s my problem with this… are the BBL in a position to lose any more teams? I agree that to be in the BBL teams should be of a certain standard, but equally do we really want a league of potentially less than 10 teams? The BBL have already said, in their view, 12 teams is already too few. I guess the question is, if one or two teams were relegated could they be replaced by better quality teams? Could the likes of Solent and Worthing up their games to be a better addition to the BBL than Giants currently are? I suppose the upcoming Manchester/Worthing Trophy game might give us an answer to that…
PS – I’m looking forward to hearing about your other podcast projects. I can’t get enough of this podcast right now, really enjoyable listen every week.

Thanks for doing this - I enjoyed the podcast again very much.
I agree with LTFan's comments above - so given I have nothing original to add I'm going to go back to refreshing Twitter and see if the Scorchers next new signing has been announced yet !

I think it's highly likely that, with a 22-game schedule, a team could finish with <6 wins. There will always be strugglers. The truth is Manchester basketball (at least form the senior men's, Giants seem to have no interest in the women's game) would be better off with one strong club. This isn't a shameless plug for my blog, but I'm repeating myself. As for promotion/relegation. Giants own a franchise, it's not going to happen as long as they are vaguely competitive and financially sound. If Solent or Worthing want to buy a franchise and have the appropriate facilities, the BBL will get bigger. Certainly, a 14-team BBL with teams playing a 26 game league schedule and six Cup games would be much better than the current format.

But the podcast argues there should be some minimum requirements in terms of quality of play to retain that franchise each season. I think there are minimum requirements in other respects, like the standard of home venue? Apparently the BBL meets with the bottom two teams each season to discuss where they’re failing, but it’s not much more than a formality and nothing really comes from it. I think it’s a good idea, and a good way of ensuring the BBL maintains a level of quality. But, as I said, I also think the BBL aren’t in a position to be relegating teams either right now.
