The BIG one. The start of the Soko/Robinson/Peel line-up…
I’m really looking forward to this. Anything other than a good win will be an embarrassment.
I’m also interested to see what Ovie Soko’s debut does to attendance. I’m predicting a much bigger than usual crowd, although I also (unfortunately) predict a lot of that crowd won’t be there for the basketball…

Is this circus act being played in a rather large tent.

From a rocks point of view will ee have new players in? If not the league campaign might start how the middle of thr cup run went.
Soko signing hopefully adds to the basketball and not just panto season

Is this circus act being played in a rather large tent. I get the joke, but I think that’s a little unfair. Yes, Ovie Soko is now an ex-reality show star following his stint on Love Island (and Lions are capitalising on that, as any team would, to bring in some extra crowds/revenue). But Ovie Soko is also the best British player, and maybe simply the best player, we’ve had playing in the BBL in a very long time. It’s not like Lions have signed Rylan Clark-Neal because he’s famous and 6ft3ins.

Dread to think what any new watchers think of our league with the quality of this stream. No score, started late, lighting is atrocious and I think the cameraman keeps falling over.
This game had the biggest opportunity to pull in any new YouTube subscribers. What a shambles.

Lol did you hear the conversation (that we weren't supposed to hear) about how to pronounce various players names? (Including soko) is it supposed to be sock or soak for start of his surname?

Rocks badly need to add quality to their squad. Too few players, and too many playing 25-30 mins who should be getting ~15 mins off the bench. I doubt we'll make the Play-offs if there aren't additions.

I want malcolm playing more minutes! What happened from first few weeks when he was 20plus to now?
We are very slow. Didnt enjoy watching much of the game.
On the lions stuff. Very plain and basic jersey. Add that to the the list. It almost looks like the jersey the bbl try to flog at finals

So how many extra fans were there for Ovie?
Seemed more than normal on YouTube albeit the upper stands were empty as normal

Seemed more than normal on YouTube albeit the upper stands were empty as normal Biggest crowd I think i’ve ever see at the Copper Box for a normal league game, I’d say 3,000+ but that’s just a guess. And the extra crowd wasn’t all teenage girls which is good.

Who is this Ofvie Socko the commentator speaks of? Really disappointing, and I hope the BBL have words with Lions about the quality of their coverage.

Taking the thread slightly off-topic but I went along to the match today. I was an Edinburgh Rocks fans many years ago (I was only 14 when they left Edinburgh) and then lost interest as I had no team left to follow. I would have been a season ticket holder if they'd stayed but instead I only went to a couple of basketball matches in the next 15 years (one Glasgow Rocks match and one World Cup match in Madrid). Moved to London three years ago and went to two matches in the past couple of seasons. This season, I decided to make an effort to start going more often so I'm interested to see how the season goes. I was very close to buying a season ticket earlier in the week with the Black Friday deal but didn't do so in the end.
Went to the cup match against Flyers a couple of weeks ago. Match today certainly had a far higher crowd although I guess the Flyers one wasn't helped by it being on a Wednesday night and being a cup match.
Apologies for probably posting something not very interesting or relevant to this thread but I'm trying to follow British basketball again so might start posting on here if I maintain my interest in going this season. One thing I certainly observed from today was that there was very little atmosphere throughout the match. Is that normal? Maybe it was because the match wasn't very close or it was the first one of the season but I was a bit disappointed by that side of things. Apart from that, I'm looking forward to going to basketball again. I probably won't attend again until the Royals match next month as I'm away in Edinburgh over Christmas but looking forward to a derby match.

Big crowd, poor atmosphere. There was an energy missing from both the players & the crowd. Drinking until 4.30 in the morning probably didn't help my own enthusiasm levels!!! I couldn't even bring myself to abuse Gareth!
Lions played well in the first quarter & the performance level then dropped. Far too many turnovers & I felt sometimes we were trying to over complicate what is a quite simple game. Fortunately for Lions, Rocks weren't very good so we got away with a sub-standard performance, against many other clubs we would have struggled to get over the line. Given the minutes spread about tonight I think it's likely we'll see one or two changes in Lions line up fairly soon.

You don’t have an import playing 6 minutes. Dijon was a good fit at Phoenix. I had my doubts about him fitting st lions with Ovid joining he obviously doesn’t Shame nice lad

So putting everything else to one side for a moment, what did everyone think of Ovie Soko?
I know it’s hard to judge a player on just a single game, and their first game at that, but I’d say he’s a solid player and a very good signing. Based on yesterday’s performance I’d say he’s on the same level as Robinson and Peel, but in all honestly not necessarily any better than them. Which is fine, great in fact. Lions have been too reliant on Robinson and Peel so far this season, so to have another player of their level should do very good things for the team. My only reservation is that if the rumours of what Lions are paying him (directly and via any commission type deals) are true then I think we should be expecting more from him. But like I said, it was just his first game.

Remember its his first basketball game for god knows how long, and that he's not in game shape having (probably) not trained as hard as he has in the past for a good 6 months now. Got 17 and 13.
Depending on what his other commitments allows, when he's back in game shape he'll be destroying this league.
