The BBC paid homage to him perfectly.... By showing a 30 second clip of Lebron James' highlights vs 76ers.....
Clowns.
Skysports news reporter in american just said what Kobe did for baseball! Absolutely gutted ill admitted ive watched clips and read comments and ive cried as he was mat 1st sporting hero. He did so much on court and was being to do even more off it! When he was number 8 he was great but when he went to 24 Kobe became something so much much more than a basketball player. He became an inspiration for on the court and off it! RIP Legend Better than an American news anchor I suppose, who described him as a perfect fit for the "Los Angeles N***ers".
A Freudian slip of the worst order.

Confirmation that NINE people were on the flight, three of them young teenage girls, one of which was his daughter, Gianna.

Just to add my thoughts…. Obviously terribly sad news. One of the top 10 players of all time, but perhaps one of the top 5 in terms of what he did for the NBA brand globally. Certainly not a perfect human being, but a basketball legend. I feel even more lucky now to have witnessed him play in person. RIP.

Heartbroken. Still hasn't sunk in yet. Watching the two early Sunday NBA games yesterday was certainly a strange experience. After the Raps and Spurs took the 24 second violation the basketball then got jammed behind the basket. Also a bit spooky. Also to see players like Devin Booker crying just makes it worse. Millions of tears will be shed. You've only got to look at the impact he's had on people this far away from him. Imagine how you feel if you are a Lakers fan who have basically spent their lives idolising him week in week out close up. Bigz pointed out it feels like losing a member of your family and he's feeling like that from a distance. I'm not as big into basketball as some on here but I've used Kobe in recent years as an example to my son about work ethic and application etc to sport. So him and I have followed him closely. I loved his poem etc and I enjoyed listening to the awe people held him in who knew him. When I heard he once stood upto Shaq and blows were exchanged I knew he had something different and special about him. Don't think Shaq was used to people going against him etc. I think that was about work ethic. Kobe knew Shaq could give more to the sport etc.

Yeah, I really didn't like him as a player and I still feel shocked about it, he'd be one of the last people you would ever think something like this would happen to. Even though I cheered against him I still spent 20 years of my life watching him play ball so it does feel like a loss, coming so soon after he finished playing. Not even in the hall of fame yet. I also appreciate he was a devoted father and its really tragic the 2 youngest will grow up never really knowing him.
I was watching a documentary about Paul Walker yesterday as well - of course he died in similar circumstances at a similar age and on both occasions you just feel like life is such a bitch sometimes.

He had so much ahead of him. He was approaching business and life outside basketball with the same intensity and focus he had on the court. Was going to do a hell of a lot of great things that's for sure.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51275170 That's an interesting idea, but personally don't think a death is a reason to change the logo. Perhaps as a temporary thing but not permanent. There are 101 other ways the league can and will pay tribute.

Yeah it was a terrible and amateurish mistake by the BBC but what’s that got to do with Tom Fordyce’s article?

There are 101 other ways the league can and will pay tribute. I guess if they had an online vote right now then that decision would be made fairly categorically. Personally I would suggest if they feel the need to change and update one of the most recognisable logos in the world then Jordan would be more deserving. That’s what it boils down to though? What business with that level of “brand” recognition would change their logo. Most basketball (certainly NBA) fans usually have heard it was based on a Jerry West photo but I agree with you Sam, Kobe’s tragic and shocking death is not reason enough to change it. He’d certainly be in the voting if I drew up a shortlist though

Generally BBC are terrible for basketball.......however Fordyce is a good journalist and I think that’s a good article. I don’t let their editorial sloppiness and lazy attitude towards basketball taint everything I read on their website....after all even a broken clock is right twice a day 😉

Kobe was never my favourite - a bit too greedy for me. But you don't have a career and success like he did without being a great, great player.
Since he retired he seemed to have shown the real man. Great thoughts about the game (particularly women) and obviously a devoted dad. That's why the loss is even harder to bear and I certainly felt it on Sunday evening. Friends in the US say the grief is palpable in every state, although California feel it worst. But it's an awful situation and may he, his daughter and the others that passed rest in peace.
Please don't bring the BBC or any other UK media into this. They know nothing because basketball just isn't on their horizon. When Royals went bust, the BBC were covering Zion's debut.
As if any of that matters now

I've got to say I've been very impressed with ESPN's coverage of Kobe's tragic death. They've been very balanced in their approach and paid tribute to his many achievements on and off the court, acknowledged all the good work he's done for various charities and causes but not tried to gloss over the 2003 case nor some other situations that are not always positive.

It was a good tribute they put on last night in the Lakers first game since the accident. Bit weird how every starter got introduced as Kobe, but otherwise it was nicely done. I was surprised Melo opted not to go, would have thought being there and seeing LeBron and getting to see all the tributes would have helped his grieving rather than staying away.

I was out with my nephew today, went into a shop called The Works, it was to find something for the nephew, however as I walked in the door I saw this book, Showboat, it had Kobe on the front cover. I went around the shop with my nephew and got his thing and then got the book, it was down to £3.
I'll give it a read tonight.

Did anyone watch the memorial tribute? Vanessa was extremely dignified and spoke so well I thought. MJ was good too, public speaking hasn't always been his thing in the past but this was well delivered and interesting - I hadn't realised they were so close (MJ referring to Kobe as one of the top 10 "guards" of all time I'd always thought had been a prickly moment). I like the league naming the all star MVP award after him too, that's a much better way to honor him than by changing their logo or some such.
