Have you seen the facilities at ravenscraig? Its not a good spectator venue.
I dont think a team coming through the sbl would be successful. The jump is too extreme. The only venue auitable would be the oriam in edinburgh or the pleasance however i dont think the pleasance would get into the bbl it seems okay for wbbl.

A roll out floor takes a lot of work to put down, take up and store. I don't k ow of a single nbl side who do that.

When I first started watching the BBL in the 90s a number of teams played out of Leisure Centres with a capacity of, I would guess, between 500 - 1000 people. Some of those centres were in good condition, some were not. Those were always my favourite away games to go to as the venues felt fuller and the atmosphere more intense than the larger arenas.
Would people see it as a backward step if the BBL encouraged new teams to use those sort of venues for a few years? I just don't see the need for every team to be aiming toward their own 2000+ seat arena at the current time. It might mean the established teams continue to dominate for a few years due to their higher revenue streams, but for me that would be a sacrifice worth making in order to see some new blood.

Favourite venues: Northgate, John Sandford, Calvin Hall. As venues they were poor but great atmosphere in all.

I'm happy with that as long as the play on a basketball court and not a floor where there are more line than the London Underground.

Must've been a pain for the players though, especially the Americans who'd grown up playing without the hindrance of badminton markings!

Yeah it was. Typical 70s leisure centre. Great atmosphere EPSV. Typical 2015 leisure centre. Not so good an atmosphere. but at least the club don’t have to hire out the bleachers.

some of those 70's venues had a lot going for them, but some IMHO did not help the game day noise. While the atmosphere at a game is heavily influenced by the attendees - plus what is happening on the floor, I do think the role of a venue is sometimes underplayed.
Going back a few (well a lot!) of years - always loved the atmosphere at Stretford Sports Centre when Man Utd Basketball played there. Around the same time, also watched games at the Armitage Centre Fallowfield and it was the shiney new bright and high roof venue compared to low roof and dark Stretford. Memory says at Armitage was a big single tier of seats and lots of empty space for sound to drift into but Stretford was tight and the sound could only head to the court.

It did get to the stage at the Northgate that there were cracks and dents in the concrete floor, then they needed to fill the holes with more concrete!! Terrible lighting and really hard work pulling all the seating out with car jacks to keep them up. BUT a hell of an atmosphere, noise was bouncing off the low ceiling.

Got me nostalgic and went looking in you tube for the last game at the north gate but looks as though it’s been taken down. Shame

I imagine a few of the Americans Jets signed over the years had a shock when they turned up at the Northgate "Arena" for the first time

not only the Americans but Mrs Jones was none too impressed either. My kids liked the slides in the fun pool though as did I.

Like a beautiful sunset over Chester, ...I miss them fluorescent orange lights, Like the low level beams of Leicester, ...and bleachers that hurt ya butt all night, sadly all those days have now gone away, ...Come to Whatsbev, get drunk, bitch and stay, and just live to fight another day. by I'm a poet and I know it

Just watched the last game Northgate piece.
Brilliant 17 minutes watch - thanks for that.
My wife and I spied ourselves several times in the crowd. Though (very) long-time Bullets/Wolves fans, we've always had a sort of 'second-favourite team' thing going on with Chester so we knew we just had to travel up for that very last Northgate game. We so much wanted Jets to progress in the play-offs but nevertheless enjoyed drinking in the atmosphere there, seeing Paul Sturgess get minutes/points, and remembering past visits.
On that note, in amongst many Northgate memories can any of you recollect a match vs Wolves when a Chester player (with an NBA connection of sorts) hit 50pts, who he was, his background etc.
I know any of you or I could do a Google search for the info., but I just wanted to see how many people can recall the info without doing that.
It was so long ago when I first began posting on WhatsBev, that it was a time when there really was little you could Google for - old-school for the old folks...

Not sure about that game, I can remember Victor Moses hitting 50 points at the Nothgate but I thought that was against Plymouth.

reallyoldfeenixfan/faz - was definitely not Victor Moses.
And it was definitely vs Wolves - in fact, I am almost sure it was the guy's debut for Chester. He joined late-season and may have only played a handful of matches before going on to a higher level. He may have even got 51/52/53 ish and I remember being staggered that he was playing in the BBL.
As someone else mentioned above, it all seems odd that there have been so many (relatively) high-level players coming to Chester when you think they could have been getting big bucks elsewhere.

Loren Meyer?

Sorry, No (Loren Meyer was certainly a step above, but not necessarily a huge scorer)
3-0 to me so far
