There's a Towers v Leopards game on YouTube (uploaded by the author of the book coincidentally) where Duck is playing after Hester has left so he was definitely the replacement.
Wideman is also playing in that game. I'm sure he left later in the season and Perry Carter came in for him?
It looks as if #9 is a combination of Hester and Wideman (a shooting guard who suffered from shooting slumps - Hester - but with a girlfriend called Whitney - Wideman ) and #11 is a combination of Van Elswyck and Austin (a 27 year old who was only registered for Europe - Van Elswyck - but London born and played for Towers the previous season - Austin).
Maybe Graham thought having a smaller number of main characters would make the story easier to follow for readers.

Yeah this is what I was just coming to say after thinking about it. It looks as if the author has taken bits and pieces and merged players to make his own, therefore making more interesting characters.
