Coincidentally, having just finished a (moderately interesting) Louis Theron's biography, and not being expected to do too much to help out in Xmas arrangements other than scoffing, I am also reading a (very interesting) book about Towers euro adventures.
It's called Semi Pro Am, and is authored by a somewhat disgruntled ex-Tower.

I’d be interested in reading Hersey after you if Mr Tall doesn’t mind. Would be happy to forward on afterwards.

Is it any good? Was going to buy it but after seeing who the author is I'm unsure.

I recognise his name, but can't place him.
The hyperbole in the review of it couldn't be more OTT,
I'm sure Connors will pass it on, it could become the most read book in British basketball history.

Possibly already have it i suppose Thanks for the thought MrTall. Is this the one authored by Graham Wilson, former assistant coach under Nick Nurses days? I'd quite like to buy it once everyone has read it... whoever is last to have it DM me, I'll pay them for postage and pay MrTall for the book itself.

I'd never heard of it until this thread so thanks for the tip!
I ended up buying the ebook version on Amazon. If you search for "semi pro am" it's the first result and is only £5.95.
I really enjoyed it but I think that was because I was a fan at the time. If you were following the BBL twenty years ago and remember some of the players it'll probably be an interesting read too (but more recent fans might not find it quite as engaging).

LTFan - Yep it's by Graham Wilson and basically just tells stories from across the season. It concentrates heavily on some players (Steve Bucknall, Kendrick Warren, Jerry Hester, Randy Duck and Mark Spatcher funnily enough) with others not being mentioned at all. I imagine Graham contacted the players before writing it and some asked not to be mentioned. There's also a fair amount of artistic license around certain aspects - for example what certain people did/thought in private moments. It was a good read though and there were lots of stories I didn't know.

I have no idea, all names are removed and its before my time Yes it was the Kendrick Warren year.
Although the players are referred to just by their numbers e.g. #14 for Warren, if you remember that time you can work out who the players are.
Like I said earlier, an interesting read indeed for British basketball fans, even more so if, like me, you have revelled in the sport for many years.

About a third of the way through. Does anyone know why the author always talks about chocolate eggs when the sponsor that season was Haribo and not Kinder until the following season?
As for the players, I have it as..
#14 Kendrick warren #13 Steve Bucknell #9 Tom Wideman #20 Mark Spatcher #11 Neville Austin
Anyone else make it any different?

I had #9 down as Jerry Hester not Tom Wideman, as the intro refers to him as a shooting guard.
I also had #11 down as Peter Van Elswyck instead of Neville Austin. The age matches up in the intro (27) and Van Elswyck definitely only played European games. There are a few things that don't match though, in particular a reference to him having played at Towers the previous year, so I think some artistic license was used.
I hadn't picked up on the sponsor thing. Maybe Kinder were already a secondary sponsor at that point? Either that or its just more artistic license. It always amazed me how many sponsors we had for the number of fans, and some big multi national companies too.

Interesting. I did some research and Tom Wideman has a wife called Whitney so #9 must be Wideman.
For some reason I thought #11 was said to be English? Austin also was a Tower the year before. I maybe wrong on that however.
There's certainly some creative writing going on.

Was wide an cut? The text says it was a guard who was cut and Wideman wasn’t. I had #9 as Randy Duck

Randy wasn't cut, he signed a little bit into the season after taking a season break from the BBL to play in the US.

Yes I though Randy replaced the guard who was cut but I don’t know who that was.
