AMBITIOUS plans for a three-storey sports centre at Essex University have been approved.
The proposals for a sports hall with space for three basketball courts which could also be used as 12 badminton courts were waved through by Colchester Council’s planning committee.
Plans include space for sports therapy facilities, classrooms and a rehabilitation area.
The sports hall could also feature a social space and bar, and up to 1,800 spectators could fit into the arena which could host university fixtures in national competitions.
Primarily, the space would be on offer for students.
However, it would also be available to the public in the way that many of the university’s other facilities are.
Plans for covered tennis courts, which would be lost because of the expansion, were approved in March, but a plan for an all-weather sports pitch has been rejected.
Colchester Council did not have to discuss the decision because nobody wanting to speak against the development attended their planning committee meeting.
Wivenhoe Town Council had expressed concerns about trees being cut down to make way for the building and potential increased traffic.
