It is nuts.
All players are housed. They have to be. Some will get single accommodation put into contract. Similarly with cars. It will be a contracted benefit. Contractually all players will have access to healthcare.
Ultimately they have a market value. And if the club won’t pay that value they won’t hang around and will find someone who will.
I understand that you bathe your club in a light through tinted glasses. The reality is though that whilst situation is important to established players, paying market value is far more important. And players regularly leave EVERY club in the BBL when a club view of their value diverges from their own
Actually I was responding to you telling a Nix fan it was nuts to suggest Nix have paid players more than Riders in the past
There's lots of ways to reward players
I wasn't bathing my club in a light through tinted glasses at all
I was just backing up why what he had been told might be correct in SOME cases whilst you just dismissed it out of hand
Based on conversations I've had with various Riders players in the past
Riders through partnerships can offer good add ons that allow them to afford to put together deeper squads
Without putting names of current players in the mix theres an established well known player I know personally in BBL who earnt nothing but expenses and accommodation etc whilst studying a Masters degree who now earns a solid wage in BBL terms (£2k per month approx) plus quality accommodation now theyve completed their studies
I know at least two others who returned to US having sacrificed salary for a Masters education with Riders
Add ons are important in any job but particularly low paid jobs which BBL is in sporting terms
When a player/coach is evaluating an offer they will know what's personally important to them and what isn't and put a value on it accordingly
Simple as that
You actually admit it yourself above? An established player with a partner and/or young family will put a lot of value on the quality of accommodation and any other benefits they can get and settle down in some cases
Equally a young player will sacrifice salary for a good education
I've seen both with players I know
If youve not seen that you are either blind to it or just arguing for the sake of it
There's lots of ways to reward players in sport
And in a low paid sport like basketball the extra add ons can be worth more than any salary
Players using BBL as a stepping stone for a year won't have so much time to evaluate or compare add on. They don't have time for an education etc
Your Liggins type players
Players who want an education or to settle down for a bit certainly will
Case in point Bernardini
And now we have Conner with a young baby committing for three years
No doubt Riders will have used some partnerships etc to make him a great overall package. I don't know the details. In the past he benefited from Uni education. Now he wants to settle down
Whereas if it was just salary on offer and a shared flat he could earn more elsewhere
Nelson Henry is doing a Masters with us. That means he will be earning a fraction of what he might get paid if he wasnt on a studying deal
So we get him for three years and it's win win for player and club
Market values don't come into any of the above?
So don't just dismiss add ons like they are unimportant in BBL Dave
Also not all players get cars. And you should know better than most that the quality and type of accommodation they get can differ hugely. Even at the same club ? Depending where they are on the ladder and their situation etc
Without the valuable add ons that the Riders partnerships give the club we wouldn't have had the deep squads we've had in recent years nor won the League Titles we've won in recent years
Simple as that
If you don't work on or value these add ons in the North East or are unable to offer them etc as you dont have similar partnerships then it might explain some of the lack of depth eagles squads have had in recent years which eagles fans themselves accept has stopped them challenging for titles?
Without Jelson Homes houses and University Masters degrees each year we would have far less to offer our players other than salary?
It's a huge part of our success?
What have I missed ?
