Went to this yesterday in Newcastle.
Firstly brilliant organisation, great use of a great venue and superb atmosphere! Bit noisy but I’m old ….. our juniors all loved it!
The parents certainly seemed to enjoy watching the format but several of our kids teams did well so that’s par for the course.
The interpretation of the rules was interesting. Baring in mind Alan Richardson was reffing many of the games along with several other excellent refs it certainly was a case of interpretation and perhaps a different perspective for this version of the sport. Our U18s seemed to be getting away with an awful lot of reaching and bumping and were the recipients of it too.
I did not watch the men’s but I’ve been told it was extremely physical. This is my recollection of 3v3 in the 90s and as long as everyone who plays is up for it and the refs don’t let it spill over then I guess it has its place.
My biggest takeaway was how many junior teams (no coaching) in games gave up their considerable height advantage to jack up a ridiculous amount of bad 3s (worth 2). Someone pointed out with the 1s and 2s score that the risk v reward is even more statistically in favour of shooting more from beyond the arc…..I can see that point but only if you can actually shoot them……..
Anyway our successful 18s/16s are now trying to work Out how to get to London from NE in 2 weeks time in middle of Summer hols.

I was at the Aspire 3-on-3 tournament on Sunday, and also had a great time. Noticeably the girls didn't jack up loads of "2s", I suspect it was different for the boys. We're doing Ball Out on Sunday, so I'll be interested to see the difference between boys/girls and different age groups. I still can't see this ever taking off as a spectator sport.

expect a more physical brand of basketball than normal and getting progressively more physical as you go up the age groups....

The boys games I watched were a bit more physical, plenty of 3s jacked up. I was impressed with how it was run. We won and had a great time, Shame there's no national finals but I can the issue with getting kids' teams from Newcastle, Manchester etc travelling that far for summer league basketball.

There are national finals for the U16 (losing semi)/U18(winners). They are this Saturday at Finsbury Park. Just U14s no finals. Our U16 and U18s qualified and are going. I know other teams that qualified from the Newcastle event that are not going. Apparently getting to London from North East for a 9.30am registration is a bit tricky and expensive.......who would have thought?

It's hardly a surprise that teams are pulling out, it's the holiday season and it's a big journey for potentially 3x10 minute running clock 3-on-3. If there'd been U-14 finals in Newcastle we'd have gone, though. Probably with three who qualified. We took 12 of our 16 under-16s to a camp in Worthing on Monday. Clearly we're not normal.

Nearly all our kids seem to be going with parents and making a "weekend of it". I've been in high demand for advice on "London".......biggest fear for most of them is not the level of play in the 16s/18s (I'm presuming pretty high) but navigating the London Underground system :-)
I think they could have done it differently with only having the winners of each area tournament compete in the "Finals" and then basically offering some sort of travel/accommodation assistance as part of the prize? They don't seem to lack funding.
I'm also wondering if there is a contingency for rain.....long way to go from the NE to be rained off!!
Anyway the kids are looking forward to it from our club. S
