End of year update:-
Szolnoki Olaj - bottom of group I having lost both games
Dinamo Sassari - 2nd place in group K, lost 1 and won 1
Bakken Bears - equal top of group L having won both games
After the first two rounds of games Bakken Bears seem to be the team to watch.
In both rounds there have been some serious blow-outs!! In the 1st round there were three 35+ point blowouts. In the 2nd round there were four 20+ point blowouts.

Wake me up when it’s the final. Seriously though, thanks for the updates, it’s quite interesting to know how Riders rivals are doing.

Any chance of a British team going into Europe next season?
I think while it is a chance to increase the profile of the league it does harm the team and their performance domestically and Leicester have been less than impressive this season.
I hope that there will be another team in Europe from the BBL.

I hope that there will be another team in Europe from the BBL. That's a big question that only time will answer. I think that invitations to take part are prioritised something like league winners, league runners-up, play-off winners etc. I really hope that there is a UK team regularly in Europe as it will benefit the game as a whole. As we have found out, it is a very very big commitment for a club......

I'd like to see London go for it - it will give a good insight into the appetite for higher level basketball in the UK in comparison to the NBA game that often sells out. Much bigger market down there than in Leicester and if London cant make a success of midweek European basketball attendance numbers then I'm not sure may others could.

I agree about the bigger market in London but any team considering a sortie into Europe will need a three year run-up to get things in place (££££, logistics, resources, arena rules) including the success that's initiates an invitation. Id be very surprised if London (or any other team) are in that position for next season.......but I live in hope.

Any chance of a British team going into Europe next season? That’s the big question. If Lions win the league this season (which I know is still far from decided) they’d be offered the invite for the FIBA Champions League qualifying round, and guaranteed FIBA Europe Cup entry if that fails. If they accepted it that would mean that if Riders want another go at it they’d have to go via the qualifying round of the FIBA Europe Cup this time and wouldn’t be guaranteed anything.

I completely agree with you in regards to any European adventure taking a lot of planning. But don’t underestimate Vince. He’s been talking about Lions in Europe for a while now, even saying that the 2018/19 season was a possibility but he said the catalyst would be winning a domestic title. So it sounds like he’s perhaps done more of the planning than we may think but is just waiting for the right time. Maybe now that they’re going to finish the season with at least 1 title that time might be now? Personally I’m still not convinced Lions are quite ready. On the court I suspect with the same team as this season they’d maybe put in a slightly better performance that Riders did in Europe. But where Lions are nowhere near as advanced as Riders is their home venue. Lions hire (albeit under a long term anchor tenancy agreement) an expensive and busy arena. I just don’t know whether that would work. And then of course there’s the financial cost v return issue, something every team in the BBL would have to think very carefully about.

The last games of the 2nd round have been completed.
Of the teams Riders encountered...... Szolnoki Olaj are eliminated at this round Dinamo Sassari qualify (by winning their group) Bakken Bears qualify (as runners-up in their group)
The top three (of the four groups) have all qualified (12).
These 12 are joined in the next round (two legged knock out) by four other teams who I assume have failed to qualify in a higher ranked competition.

So Riders did a good job getting close to Sassari by the looks of it.

I hope that there will be another team in Europe from the BBL. It not sure about that. Playing higher level competition pre season should have had the riders finely tuned and ready to rip the league domestically. Personally think riders have regressed this year and it has nothing to do with the European adventure. The import guard was erratic, Hampton was injured, Tommo is playing less minutes and getting older, Wright didn’t perform and they haven’t replaced the likes of Sullivan and Bernadini with the same quality At the same time others have got better notably Lions and Royals. The main issue would be finance and I’m guessing the lack of interest from the Leicester public would prove prohibitive in the future. Fab and Rob have some work to do imo to get back to the top domestically. I’d also like to see a London franchise enter next year and would hope it might succeed finanacially from the capital

MUNICH (Germany) - The FIBA Europe Cup Quarter-Finals are set, following the conclusion of the Round of 16 on Wednesday night. The Quarter-Finals will see a total of seven countries represented, Italy being the only nation with two clubs left in the competition. The matchups are as follows: Alba Fehervar (HUN) v UNET Holon (ISR) Dinamo Sassari (ITA) v Pinar Karsiyaka (TUR) s.Oliver Wurzburg (GER) v Bakken Bears (DEN) Pallacanestro Varese (ITA) v Filou Oostende (BEL) The Quarter-Finals will follow the same home-and-away format, with the teams listed first enjoying home-court advantage in the return leg. The first-leg games are scheduled for March 20, with the return-leg games set to take place a week later. www.fiba.basketball/europecup/18-19/news/fiba-europe-cup-quarter-final-pairings-confirmed

If they can assemble a roster along the lines of:
PG: Justin Robinson SG: Import SF: Import PF: Hamilton C: Bryan-Amaning
Bench:
Ed Lucas Will Neighbour Import big man Washington Dang Okodo Jackman Tayo
Then I'd be really excited to see them enter Europe.

This is pre-supposing Tayo/Washington and the biggest task of them all Justin Robinson all jump ship. Which may well be fantasy island to be fair!

I like the idea of an all-star BBL team, that would be one way to seriously compete in Europe! I know it’s probably against all the rules, but there was talk recently about the Euroleage being interested in a dedicated London team (i.e. one that didn’t play domestically), so is it such a farfetched idea? Would FIBA allow it? Would the BBL (and it’s respective teams) allow players to play for both their teams and a BBL All-Stars team in Europe? Tune in next week for another of my hare-brained ideas…

Was there not an Irish team following that kind of method in one of the European competitions? Am I getting mixed up?
