Think it's about time we started off a thread dedicated to the World Cup. All games are live to watch on livebasketball.tv

I was having a look at most of the rosters just to see if any players had the same birthday as me and I found 2, Semen Antonov of Russia and Thanasis Antetokounmpo, 1/3 of the Antetokounmpo brothers who'll be playing with his more famous younger brother, Giannis.

If you've not already watched this warm up game it's worth a look. An interesting contrast in styles.
Crowd of over 52000 too!!!

I thought I would quickly jump on this thread.
I am lucky enough to be heading China tomorrow. I will be the co-commentator for the Nanjing Group (Brazil, Greece, Montenegro and New Zealand) on the FIBA international feed (used on livebasketball.tv as well as most betting channels).
I know that we (GB) aren’t there but this is set to be the best World Cup for a long time (possibly ever) so make sure you tune in. If you love basketball you will be in for some of the best in the world and why not adopt a random country that are there (makes it more fun, Montenegro are the smallest nation ever to make it to the finals 600,000 population).
Hope you enjoy the tournament and Makem Takem will be back soon for the start of the BBL season.

Looks like there are a lot of the matches on Eurosport. How did you see that Gerrymac? I've looked and cannot see anything but hopefully I'm wrong. Also Maken Takem - sounds a great opportunity to go and work at the tourney so good luck with that. Hope it goes well.......however to say it looks like being one of the best for sometime given the amount of NBA players across multiple countries not playing might be stretching a point a bit........

I can't see anything either, is it being streamed via Eurosport App instead of on normal TV?

it's on the Eurosport Player streaming site / app. I think you can get it for a month for not that much. It's much better a product than Livebasketball.tv too.
I'm not sure about best World Cup either with all the talent missing, not only on the US team, but Spain not what they once were, the Eurobasket champs Slovenia not even there due to the idiotic qualifying windows, Croatia too.... but it's basketball to watch when there isn't usually any, so can't complain too much....

It is clear that there is plenty of top talent missing (particularly USA). This however has meant that we have the most unpredictable tournament in memory. I challenge you all to pick you medalists and how confident you are in those predictions?
I know I am struggling and change my mind every couple of hours. For me this makes it a really exciting tournament to follow and there are still plenty of top level players on show.

Kind of shows the floor in the World Cup concept though doesn’t it? Basically to have a competitive tourney apparently the best country in the world needs to send it’s 3rd/4th string and a whole host of other teams better players ne d to sack it off.
I’m hoping to watch the games as I like FIBA hoops. I’m sure there will be some great games. I would struggle to honestly pick my winners without researching exactly who is playing. Let’s be honest FIBA international games are not exactly well covered in the British media.
For me the World Cup is not necessary though. Pinnacle on international hoops is the Olympics. The qualifiers for that should be done regionally and then let the fun begin. The World Cup feels like football feels in the Olympics.....nice to watch but not the big one is it?

Yes, it is on Eurosport player. I can watch on my phone, iPad, PC or TV. Really good value. Special deals throughout the year but usually somewhere between £50-80 per year. Get almost all the Euroleague games as well as German, Italian and Turkish league matches. Tour de France and La Vuelta as well.

I still have a livebasketball pass active from women's EuroBasket (their cheapest pass back then took you through the men's World Cup) so I have access, but it's still a little sad that none of the proper TV channels had any interest in showing what's supposed to be the biggest international basketball tournament outside the Olympics. All the air-time that Sky, BT, Eurosport proper and even FreeSports have to fill, and either none of them wanted it or none of them were willing to pay what FIBA thought the rights were worth. So it ends up on a subscription service that you have to go searching for. Yet another discouraging comment on the state of the game in this country.
That said, the format hasn't exactly drawn me in so far. So many games, teams and stages that I struggled to have much interest in the opening few days. I'm gonna take a look at the US game today, but largely speaking they can get back to me when they've cut out the dead wood and the more meaningful games between teams that might win something get underway.

Can't believe China didn't make it to the Second Round.
Have China always underachieved or is it maybe because they don't have a presence like Yao Ming anymore?

They're really not a world power. They were terrible in London. They qualify because they're in a weak region.

The Asian and African teams have been incredibly weak, and none have made it to the round of 16. No, I’m not counting Australia...

Thanks Inaminute
Wow. Serbia turned over by Argentina lead by legend Scola. As a old baller myself I love it when a relatively old fella shows there’s still some life in the old dog yet! Really couldn’t see anyone, and I mean anyone, beating Serbia.

USA out! I still count it as a big shock they didn't win or even get a medal. It's very healthy for the sport that they didn't though. Expect more top players to sign up for the Olympics and restore order!

I would say Serbia being beaten by that Argentinian side is a bigger shock but clearly any squad of current NBA players is generally favourite going into any game. From the match reports and limited highlights it looks very much like the USA were in driving seat and then the French turned the screw and blew them away in the final stretch. France have a good team for FIBA basketball and one thing all the "Dream Teams" have masked is that the USA have always won on talent and not necessarily by playing great team basketball.
Since 92 with the odd exception they always can just give it to an guaranteed first ballot HOF, perennial all star, champion, scoring champion, alpha dog, rip your heart out kinda of player when things start getting a bit close. Those teams dominate defensively and run teams off the floor. They take it from being FIBA basketball and turn it into a talent contest and nobody can match them. Its a sensible approach!!!
If that game yesterday was played to NBA rules I am confident it would have had a different outcome. Still would have been close.
I also think that the national pride that many of the other teams have is missing from team USA. They would disagree but those guys live and work in the country of their birth all year around. Most of the other teams have many players plying their trade all over the place and I think they seem to have a real camaraderie when they get together with fellow countrymen for these tournaments. They play more often together than team USA that is truly a scratch team for every tourney almost. They also will often not have direct club rivalries within their squads to overcome. Their coaches generally are FIBA coaches and they will have many (not all) of their players very used to playing under FIBA refs and rules. Loads of advantages to exploint when USA don't bring their best.
If I were the ROTW I would say nothing now and hope the USA don't notice.....last time this happened they snapped off 78 games in a row with seriously stacked squads......

I'm not convinced the variations in the rules make that much of a difference. If you're among the best in the world (and all the US players must easily be top 100 if not 50) you should be able to adapt to different conditions. It's akin to playing a team one night that puts out 4 guards and plays small ball, then the next night a team with three seven footers in its front line. You need to change how you play. Same thing if a few rules are a bit different, you learn and adjust for it. I think this is definitely a chemistry issue. They had Pop coaching and even he couldn't get them to gel enough to beat guys less talented. He did seem to for the Greece game and they handled Giannis well. But it was never consistent, from the warm up loss to Australia, squeaking past Turkey and ultimately losing to France.

Sam it certainly is not just the rules but it is a contributing factor. Not sure how much basketball you've played yourself (and I mean that genuinely I am not having a pop!) but I know from experience that certain teams can look absolutely unstoppable against a man for man defence and then crumble at the first sight of a zone. Zones change a lot of things - they require different tactics, different skill sets, you can maximise the ability of guys like Gobert and also hide weaker defenders who are then able to play more and contribute on the offensive end.
Small ball does not work so well with zone....but it certainly can work with the right players. Pop is to me one of the top basketball minds in the world......he would have known how to solve this problem but the players were clearly not up to the task!
I also mentioned the pride players from other nations have in representing their country. Read the below quote from Marc Gasol.....
"It's so worth it and not just because we're playing in the title game," Gasol said. "It's the responsibility of passing along the commitment and the loyalty to the team. Those values that we were taught so many years, now it is our turn to pass on the legacy to the next generation. That's not talent, that's just commitment."
How many of the US NBA superstars feel like this......?
