UEL Sportsdock? Friday 5pm? I don’t know what’s happening with Lions venue bookings this season, but it’s a bit concerning… Anyway, back on topic – so Lions play Wolves on 8th and Flyers on 20th… that’s games 8 and 9. Where is their 10th game? Copper Box isn't available for the next couple of weeks, there's other events going on. 5pm on Friday at that venue will be pretty damn impossible for most people with less than a weeks notice! I'm told the fans really got in to the game on Friday and it was one of the best atmospheres we've had at the Box, to not be able to capitalise on that is very disappointing Was the Copper Box always going to be unavailable? The Lions/Wolves game is listed as at the Copper Box and at 7:30pm on the BBL website. So I assumed it was a last minute change of plans, but perhaps my mistake was trusting the BBL website! If the Copper Box is unavailable I understand having to move it to the UEL Sportsdock – I also agree that the mystery Surry game will likely have to be played there too, but why the 5pm tip-off? Not only is that difficult for most people to get there, it’s also difficult for most people to watch at home (assuming it’s actually going to be broadcast).

The 5pm slot is ridiculous but I'm sure that wasn't through choice, it's going to hit a the attendance at a venue we struggle to get people in to anyway. Even if Ovie suddenly appeared I doubt we'd sell out at that time although they'd probably be a lot of UEL students interested!

What’s next ? Vince gets lions playing out of blue water shopping centre?? 🤣🤣 That would actually be easier for me to get to than the Copper Box! Up until recently Bluewater even had an event space for concerts, boxing, etc. which would have been ideal for basketball. But I do often wonder what’ll happen when the 10 year deal with the Copper Box ends as I can’t see it being renewed. And now there’s not even Crystal Palace to fall back on. But I guess we’re going off topic a bit…

Vince himself said it in a podcast a couple of years ago. I think this is actually worthy of a bit of discussion, so rather than completely take this thread off-topic I’ll create a new one.

Back on topic, here is the format of the semi-finals for the BBL cup. I assume some games will be played mid-week as they are two-legged ties........
N1/S4 v S2/N3
S1/N4 v N2/S3

From Dan Routledge regarding the North pool:-
Pretty straightforward in the North now: * Sharks win next Friday they are 1st, lose they are 2nd * Eagles win next Friday they are 3rd, if they lose then Nix will be 3rd if they win Sunday * Rocks are 5th, Giants 6th

Most likely then eagles are looking at either Wolves or Bristol away

Thoughts as to the new format? Better or worse than previous years? Hate it - a third of the season gone and feels like all we've been doing is playing pre-season friendlies...

I like it but then again we are doing well. Qualification and home court advantage in the next round...couldn't be better.
Very understandable that if things haven't gone so well, particularly if it looks from early on that you aren't going to qualify then it doesn't leave you much other than a wait for the league season to start.
Although I don't really get all this pre-season business. The season has started - with cup games.
Granted it is giving coaches the time to look at their teams and make changes where required, dropping or adding players. This will aid coaches before the league starts. Nix are a prime example of this; started the cup games poorly, added and look in a good position to start the league. Imagine the start they made if it was in the league, they'd be some way off by now.
Maybe opposite to this is Riders who have lost players to injuries. They now have a chance to get players fit for the league.
The downside and question for me is; have the sharks peaked too early in doing so well in the cup? It's going to be a long way to the end of season and they will have to keep this current form going for a long time.

Lions need to play the home Cup fixture against Scorchers. On Scorchers' own website, even the 17/1 (London) and 7/3 (Surrey) league games are missing from their fixture list. Is this an unforeseen issue with the new format? Where games get moved, they can't be put off for months until later in the season, they have to be played by December. And in Lions' case, the rearranged Wolves game (when Lions played Raiders instead) couldn't land on a free date at the Copper Box? Do we think Lions are waiting on seeing if they can secure qualification with a win against Flyers on the 20th - and then forfeiting the Scorchers game? I haven't minded this new format so much, pending what's yet to transpire this season. However, certainly for Lions if not other clubs, it seems to have created as many scheduling issues as it's solved.

As good as Sharks have been so far this season the format of the Cup leaves me cold.
Too many games against the same opposition just to eliminate 2 of a 6 team group? Doesn’t work for me.
Cup games used to feel a bit more special as they were sandwiched between regular league games and you could see the extra competitiveness. This group stage may not be at pre season friendly levels of intensity but It does lack something.
Roll on the knockout stages and (finally) the league competition.

But if Sharks win the Cup, their first title in 6 seasons, would you be that bothered if they have? I'd love it, however, cup, trophy, play offs don't count LOL. It has to be the league :-) p.s. we won play offs 15/16 season so don't quite have to go back as far as 6 years.

The Lions/Scorchers game (the final 10th game for both teams) has now been scheduled for Saturday 23rd Nov at the Copper Box. But it’s likely to be a meaningless game… by my calculations Raiders have to win both of their final 2 games this weekend to have any chance of taking the qualifying spot from Lions. And even if Raiders do win both of their final games they’ll also need Lions to lose both of their final games (against Flyers on 20th and Scorchers on 23rd). I was thinking of going to the Scorchers game as I’ve got nothing on that day, but it looks like it’ll be meaningless by then.

If Scorchers beat Wolves and Raiders this weekend we will be on 4 wins. If that's the case the game on the 23rd becomes the decider for 4th place irrespective of what Lions do against the Flyers (as Scorchers would win H2H against Lions) So not meaningless (until Friday night at least...)

Apologies, I’d sort of written Scorcher off. But you’re right, there is a scenario where they could still take 4th position, even if it is unlikely.
