It escaped my notice that this was an early tip so I missed the game.
Not too sure about Bahcesehir being the toughest opponent. I reckon Avtodor have been arguably the most impressive team in the competition thus far. Their only round one loss was a buzzer beater, on the road against a pretty good Italian side. They beat Zaragoza twice and have started 6-1 in the strong VTB United league, with a win over Euroleague Kazan. They're not one of the big name Russian clubs but their results so far this season suggest they're a seriously good side. Probably the team to beat in this group for me though you have to fancy Bahcesehir to finish top two. Doubt Bakken will be a bunch of mugs either. They've become a pretty regular fixture in the knockout phases of this competition.
It's a shame Lions wet the bed in that final round one game versus Bayreuth. Given results to that point I don't think there was any reason to believe they couldn't go to Germany and win. And you'd for sure have fancied them to keep the margin of defeat under 11. I think they'd have had a decent enough chance of advancing from the other group. Hard to see it happening from this one. And with their first three games all on the road, they could well find themselves playing some dead rubbers at the Copper Box. Avoiding an absolute pasting in Russia next week and pinching a win in Denmark would help keep things interesting a bit longer.

UPDATE: London Lions have 3 confirmed cases of the highly transmissible Omnicron variant of Covid-19, requiring a large number self isolated under new government guidance. Therefore they've informed FIBA they can't fulfil this fixture. They're awaiting news as to whether the game can be re-scheduled or whether they'll need to forfeit with a 20-0 win being awarded to Avtodor by default.

In other new, Lions' women putt off one of the biggest victories for British clubs in Europe and no one in this BBL bubble even notices. Quite extraordinary, Brian.

Yeah, they looked very very happy at the end. Missed the first quarter with the early tip off but the rest of the game was excellent. Does St. Pat always sit right next to the crowd microphone 🎤 or does he just have a very loud voice?

Truly amazing result last night. I'm not sure how many people, even in British basketball realise what a massive win this is!
Bourge are a European powerhouse in women's basketball. They are a top French team, have played Euroleague & are rated as no.1 seeds in this competition & they have a massive budget compared to Lions.
Yet this British team, with British players just went and beat them!! And it wasn't a fluke win, Lions led for the majority of the game & when they went down in the 4th & it looked like Bourge might take the win, they held their nerve & Jo used all her experience & talent to bring the lead back, which they then held on to. It should have been more as well, if the refs had called the most blatant travel you'll ever see before Bourge scored & got an and 1.
This team are very special and they deserve far, far more credit than they are being given, particularly from their own organisation. Of course it's got to be difficult to get the media interested when Lions themselves don't even mention the game or sell tickets until 2 days before the game!!
The return leg will be really tough & Bourge will be ready for Lions, it looks an impossible task (& it should be), however last night looked an impossible task & they won, so who knows what will happen.
Whatever does happen, London Lions have put WBBL basketball front & centre in European competition & will make people sit up & take notice of British basketball!
Very proud of this team, Mark Clark has done a superb job & they gave as a very memorable night yesterday!
As for my voice(I was really struggling with a cough & cold yesterday), I couldn't possibly comment, but I don't think we were that close to the mics!

3 people care, then.
Imagine if something important, like a bloke not turning up dressed as a fox, happened.

Outside of the fact that almost any win in European competition is big for English teams I would not have appreciated the magnitude of their victory. Fair play to them. Not sure I am number 4 though. Maybe 3.5? :-)

Yeah it probably will and tbh Im prepared for the debate - I just dont find womens basketball a good watch. I far prefer the womens footy if anything. And dont say this too loud but I do actually prefer netball...

Bigz is just being controversial. He knows he wouldn't get in the Lions' team. Azania and Paige would (individually) kick his arse out of the gym. DTB is still bitter because his mum made him wear his sister's dresses. I get times were hard, but I think she just didn't like him. Which is understandable.
I think at international level and at the top end of the WBBL women's basketball is a good level, but Caitlin's been doing some stat training by watching video of some WNBL 1 games and it's pretty dreadful. But then so were Leopards' games at time.

No denying this Lions teams playing at a high level of womens basketball and yes they are about the best womens team weve seen over here - I just dont enjoy watching it. Its not massively high tempo, the highlight plays arent anything thats going to get me out of my seat, and theres nothing there excitement wise that I cant get out of watching a BBL game. Compare it to womens football which is a massively open game compared to the mens game (often a lot more goals), and netball which is unlike any other sport out there and you see the appeal by comparison.
Funny you mention it though - the leedham sisters used to run with us in the summer every now and again. Never did end up black and blue mind... now about your playing credentials?

Well I think Hersey hit the nail on the head and actually for me its what Bigz is saying. At the end of the day true equality is judging everything by the same standards. When it comes to watching a game on TV we all mainly do it to be entertained and unless it is "your team" playing (be that BBL,WBBL,NBL,local school) the likelihood is that will be found at the more elite level of the sport and at this present moment that is the men's game more often than not.
So with a huge backlog of NBA, Euroleague and BBL games to choose from I would also not have tuned in to that game. Does not mean it was not a brilliant result and fantastic achievement for Lions.

They were only being kind, didn't want to hurt your feelings!! Mixing both your recent comments, my daughter played netball with Jo when they were 11, she wasn't hurt either!.!!

Well that was a much closer, and more entertaining, game than I thought it was going to be. Great performance by Lions, but ultimately I feel there were too many missed opportunities to score when Avtodor couldn’t. And I have to give Avtodor credit for that final game winning shot… they played it perfectly.
On a side note, I noticed Vince was going solo on this one, no assistant coach in sight… presumably that’s covid related, but an interesting strategy if not.

The guy who hit the winning basket has a British passport!
Unfortunately he, and his brother, have both played for Canada.

Game all tied up, one second to go, and he fires up an unnecessary 3 pointer to win the game. Incredible. Just a shame it was for the other team.
