How can netball be doing everything right and British basketball so wrong? There is a sold out game live on BBC1 today from Wembley Arena. Similar games sold out in last year around the country with no publicity at all.
GB had 3 basketball games with less than 1000 at each in a 8000 capacity

Netball is integrated into the primary/secondary School system, so most girls understand it and can watch a game and know whats's happening
... pretty much the same as Football ... we all understand the game because we're all brought up with it.
If teen's want to get into Basketball, they usually have to join a local club after school ... money/travel ... not all kids have access !
... just my opinion for what its worth

My 3 daughters have all been to different schools and none have played netball - all have played basketball though. A lot of schools that do netball -the more affluent ones wil have bought a lot of the sold out tickets I guess

I stand corrected Was basing my assumption on my old comp school days 35 years ago ... when PE was part of the curriculum These days, forcing kids to take some exercise (not involving a mobile phone) probably infringes their human rights

So the ticket thing has been done to death, wanna fill a GB game? Don't get GB to sell tickets, get BBL to do it instead.
The coverage thing is skewed by a) being female sport and the recent rise in broadcasters wanting to cover it and b) being a traditional British sport (see funding for examples of this bias).
The other thing that no one on here will admit is we just don't care enough as spectators. We like what we like but can't be bothered with much else.
How many fans go to their teams away games? 10? 50? How many fans go to finals when their team is in it? 100? 200?
Let's take Newcastle as an example, arguably the best supported home and away. So home they can get up to 3000, but away there's usually only 20 Hardy souls. For the finals maybe they get 300 go. So less than 1% for away games, maybe 10% for a final - and thats probably as good as it gets on average across the league, maybe Leicester would get more if in Brum.
Now imagine Newcastle Utd got to a final, the demand would probably be 200-300% the 50k who go every week. They always fill away allocation which will be up to 10% of home attendance depending on the ground. Same people, but they don't care about basketball in the same way. Not beyond a trip to sports central anyway.
Netball is one of those sports (like rugby) where if you play at any level you care about all levels. So they support their one off events (and one assumes the NGB is competent at selling tickets unlike GBB) but in basketball there isn't the same connection for whatever reason.
If you play local league, ask yourself how many of your teammates or opponents can be arsed even to go and watch you local BBL team? It's a small number I bet and much smaller than those who play Netball and go to watch events like this.

No wonder that UK sport don't give any money. Everyone moans about the sport but no one does anything about it

Netball that is a pretty clueless response. The reality is UK sport don't give money to basketball because it's an Olympic sport and globally popular....two things that netball clearly isn't and never will be.
Let's be fair England are top 4 in the world in netball because there are only 4 countries in the world who play netball.

If he wants to play there's only one club within 20 miles and they have to travel quite some distance for league games.

PE teachers don't know how to teach basketball at school, I pushed for a school team when at school 14 years ago and ended up running the boys and girls team

Plymouth has 72 netball teams at the local league level and only 8 basketball. Netball is a huge sport

Will be interesting to see how netball fairs in the future mind. Sports played in the limited school PE lessons tend to fear towards the ability of the teachers to teach it and often the fall back on what they know. It's unbelievable how many people I know who got into basketball due to the fluke of having a PE teacher who happened to play.
Now looking at Netball it was certainly well played when I was at school in the 80s so there will be plenty of female PE teachers around who will have played it a lot at school and were probably quite good at it. So they teach it still......but it's deminishing in schools.
Basketball on the other hand might have the opposite going on. I'm trying to be optimistic.
The argument about netball being played by a few nations only certainly is true when it comes to explaining our success but it also does elevate the status of the national games above the majority of our sports. England Australia is the pinnacle of that sport. NBA doesn't have trouble selling out NBA arena.
Not sure our sport is in competition with netball so much as it's own incompetence. There is so little the sport does right in this country. The comments above about fan apathy are also true. I very occasionally go to watch Eagles play (would probably go more if not for the Friday nights) but I used to watch TV Tigers a lot and was struck by how many of the most dedicated and loyal fans were not players, ex players or coaches. Not sure that's relevant but there seems to be a disconnect between those of us that play and coach and the national league and BBL games.

It comes down to accessibility as mentioned above, they play it in primary schools theres also central venue leagues and regular tournaments for that age group so its cheap, regular and you don't have to travel a million miles to play an away game. This format carries on through the age groups and into adulthood where it may become a bit more social. Played on an astro turf on a Wednesday night theres games going on 3 at once and 3 time slots thats 9 games per week with god knows how many players. Compared to basketball this none existent unless you live in a city with a Ball Hall or something like that.

My daughter has been trying to find a netball club as her school doesn't do it. We are in South London and there is no netball in the area. She plays basketball at school and has been to a loca club but she really wants netball. Nearest is 10 miles away in Croydon

I've coached basketball in schools for something like 8 years and never come across a school that doesn't do netball although I am from the North.

Wow! The hate against netball is so strong right now! Really shocked to read the jealous posts being made. Netball has been in the same position as basketball in recent years in terms of the exposure it receives on television etc. Give credit where is due and that is England Netball have actually been doing a responsibly good job in the role in raising the awareness of the sport across all ages. You can even have a look at Sport England Active People and Active Lives Survey data for those that enjoy their facts! Being completely honest basketball in England is a mess so instead of moaning about why netball is getting this and that, maybe you ought to take note and learn! www.sportengland.org/our-work/children-and-young-people/sporting-champions/www.englandnetball.co.uk/And for the comment about netball only being played in 4 countries..you may want to to get your facts right before making comments like that!. netball.org/

I agree with 2NFR. Netball is actively promoted by most (well, virtually all, but I'll give "guest" the benefit of the doubt) primary schools, basketball isn't & it's pure luck if a school has anyone remotely interested in teaching the kids how to play it.
I run the basketball club at my kids' school, or there wouldn't be one (I presume at some point they'll build a statue of me). The sports coordinator returned from maternity leave after Christmas and hasn't even spent a minute watching the kids play. After a bit of badgering the parents association we now have shiny new two hoops, my daughter's year (5) are doing netball and gymnastics in PE this term - their teacher plays netball. There are 31 members of the teaching staff, one is male. There is absolutely no chance of any basketball being played aside from the sessions I run after school. I doubt that is uncommon, in fact I imagine it's a very familiar tale (and generally they won't have shiny new hoops) and it gives netball a massive start
We love netball in this country because we can be world champs. Obviously it's not that difficult to be world champs when most of the world don't even know what netball is but who cares? we're world champs.

Isn't it due to the woman at the top of UK Sport coming from Netball? I might be wrong there. It's not even an Olympic sport.

And for the comment about netball only being played in 4 countries..you may want to to get your facts right before making comments like that!. netball.org/Yes, of course, look at the major medals there are loads of different winners, how foolish of me..... Commonwealth Games Games | Year | Gold | Silver | Bronze | XVI | 1998 | Australia | New Zealand | England | XVII | 2002 | Australia | New Zealand | Jamaica | XVIII | 2006 | New Zealand | Australia | England | XIX | 2010 | New Zealand | Australia | England | XX | 2014 | Australia | New Zealand | Jamaica |
Netball World Cup Pos | Nation | Gold | Silver | Bronze | 1 | Australia | 11 (1963, 1971, 1975, 1979, 1983, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015) | 3 (1967, 1987, 2003) | - | 2 | New Zealand | 4 (1967, 1979, 1987, 2003) | 8 (1963, 1971, 1983, 1991, 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015) | 2 (1975, 1995) | 3 | Trinidad and Tobago | 1 (1979) | 1 (1987) | 1 (1983) | 4 | England | - | 1 (1975) | 5 (1963, 1971, 1999, 2011, 2015) | 5 | South Africa | - | 1 (1995) | | 6 | Jamaica | - | - | 3 (1991, 2003, 2007) |
If basketball faced that level of competition, they'd have a bit more than a few bronzes and a silver to show for it.

I would also *guess* that there would have been 16 different medal winners during the course of it's history. I would also *guess* that if basketball was in the Olympics there would be five different winners of that as well and 21 different medal winners. Oh wait, both those things actually exist and I used actual facts to base my argument on!!! How silly of me!!!

It doesn't bring international exposure, it never will. It will never be played by men at a pro level. If you want to talk about squandering money, then look no further than Netball.
What does Netball bring to the table to justify this?
Basketball reaches out to everyone. It gets kids off the streets in deprived areas and is an extension of their education. It integrates kids from different cultures.
Does Netball in the UK, bring in significant private investment?
It is royally pissing me off. There is anantiquated, biased, heirarchy who can't see past Football, Cricket, Rugby and Netball. Along with all the other middle class sports that get undeserved funding.

Money is literally everything.

What so if there was a world championship in basketball anyone other than USA would win? Of course not- silly argument There have been 4 different Olympic winners and 6 different winners of the world cup. Compared to Netball's 0 and 3 respectively. The difference here IMO is that there have been 16 medal winners in basketball compared to the 6 for netball. This would indicate a greater range of countries of quality participating. I don't think anyone would dare to argue that USA aren't significantly better than the rest but their league is a multi billion dollar industry and it's ingrained in their culture; something that can't be said about any other country. The point here really is that the second tier of basketball is significantly more competitive than the near non-existent one for netball.
